...and I feel like I just paid someone to wash my face for me. Am I missing something?
I did it an Aveda school, so at least I didn't break the bank on it.

I agree with you and I only do it if it comes with a chemical peel or microderabrasion.

Well it depends what was included....but apart from the relaxation any of a number of skin problems can be treated, your skin should be enjoying better blood flow, be deep cleansed, invigorates/soothed depending on your skin type. Was it brief? Did you go for a treat or to help a skin problem?

How long was it? I go frequently and for 60 min there is usually some kind of peel, hydrating mask or another relevant mask, steam to open pores, etc.

I can do a mask at home, don't need to pay someone $100 to do it for me. When I had acne sure steaming and exfoliation helped, but now with no skin conditions I don't see the point.

The ones that I have had have felt luxurious, and worth paying for. I always have plenty of stuff to 'extract', though.

Bummer. I get them every now and then as a treat. The aesthetician at my friends salon is amazing! She really makes it an experience. I almost always fall asleep she gets me so relaxed.

I have had them and always really enjoyed them. No real skin issues either....but the pampering and relaxation are awesome. Did your aesthetician do anything besides washing your face? A mask? Steaming? Even with just a basic service, I always felt like they did more than just wash my face.

I go almost monthly, and it's worth every penny to me. Do you feel that way about other services? Is a pedicure just paying someone to paint your toenails, or do you see more value in it? It's along the same lines for me... Yes, I could do it all myself, but the pampering is the most enjoyable point. Frankly, the other stuff (better skin, etc.) is just a fringe benefit.
The masks/peels you do at home don't even compare, IMO. I do them multiple times a week, and good brands, but it's still not the same.

I thought they squeezed blackheads with a facial - ?
Never had one. Or a pedicure, either.

i have been painting my nails weekly since middle school and toes once a month. I don't wear flip flops so don't need major slothing of my feet. Never worn my nails sans polish all these years, it's really not much effort. I only go to the salon for a gel for vacation.
Whatever fancy mask the salon has you can buy somewhere online. I'm addicted to my weekly facial mask.

I enjoy facials..it's very relaxing and that's part of the experience vs a home mask.
I agree you can buy the products at home and DIY it but I'd pick having it down any day of the week.

I had my very first facial at a med spa a couple months ago. It was actually a gift from my doctor's office. The value was $115. (I found out because I wanted to tip and didn't know how much the facial cost.) It was a wonderful experience. I don't even know what all she did to me because there were so many different applications and hot towels and massage and whatnot. My treatment was not just my face, but also my neck, décolletage, and a foot massage. I knew I was in for something when I came in the room and she wanted me to get undressed, put on a robe, and lie down. Haha. My skin felt and looked amazing afterward! I wouldn't spend that money on myself for that purpose on a regular basis, but I do think the value was there, especially because she used all organic products.

As I said in my earlier post (did you read the other posts?) it's not that I *can't* paint my toes or nails, it's that it's nice to have someone else do it for me. The same thing with a facial. I have plenty of masks at my home, easily over 30 different types. Good, professional-strength brands, some costing as much as $70 apiece. I do masks/peels at home at least once a week, and sometimes 2-3 times a week. No matter how much time/energy/money I spend on my at-home beauty regime (and I spend a lot of all three of those things) it's not nearly as relaxing and rewarding as my facials. And I can't even tell you how much I'm looking forward to the one I have scheduled tomorrow. BTW: Do you ever eat out? Because you know you could buy all those ingredients in the grocery store and make your own food...

From the looks of your picture here, that up to over $800 you spend on your face a month (up to $70 each treatment two to three times a week) is working. Your skin looks so smooth and pretty!! I say if you enjoy it and can afford it, go for it!!!

I got a steam treatment, and lots of creams and scrubs.
I did find it relaxing, but I think I walked out of there feeling just as awful about my skin as when I walked in. I have bad skin, and found it slightly uncomfortable to allow another human to look at my face that close and in person. I do love massages and mani/pedis, so maybe I will just stick with those in the future!

Facials are my favorite treat...I've had them all over the world. There are real differences in the quality. I go to a great beauty school that has a department just to specialize in them. Don't go to someplace like Empire Beauty School as the students get almost no training. The only time I went there, the student didn't know what a mask was. I suggested that student ask for a refund on her tuition. Mine last 75 minutes and are Euro facials which mean they use the steam machine. Sometimes they do "extractions" but sometimes they aren't offered. They use Dermalogical products. They charge $20 and they even have a punch card so your eleventh one is free. Massages are my least favorite treat. Around here, we have many Chinese foot spas...$25 for an hour...they are wonderful. You keep your clothes on. They start with your head and work down each arm...your feet are soaking in a wooden tube. The second half hour they work on your feet and calves.

I've had some great to just ok facials. And I love them.
It does make your skin better and really at the end of the day, it's about treating yourself to some relaxation.

And just to add, the value of a facial is personal. I choose to spend my money on my face, nails and feet. I just always feel better. No price on that.

I am sorry you didn't enjoy your facial more.
I've been going monthly they include cleansing, an exfoliating mask and either a clay or healing type mask, extractions (my skin can get very congested), moisturizing, and massages (first hands & forearms, then shoulders & neck). I keep up with at home treatments but I go mostly for the extractions. My skin looks much better and I also know how to take care of my skin better.

I'm anti-facial but not for the reason that I could do it myself because I would go for a pedicure or reflexology or massage every day of the week and twice on Sundays if money was no issue (I still go frequently)
But as far as a facial? Having someone that close to my face and neck gives me a serious case of anxiety. I absolutely hate to have my face and neck touched, even to the point that I finally determined that my dental phobia was more about having someone that close to my personal space than it was about the dental work itself. It makes me feel like I can't breathe.
I swear that if I believed in past lives, I would think that I must have been strangled or suffocated because it makes me THAT anxious to have someone near my face.

I am always so surprised when I hear people say that facials/manicures/pedicures are relaxing. For me, having someone touching my face, hands or feet for any length of time would be anything but relaxing. Just thinking about it skeeves me out.

I'm sorry you felt bad about your skin after it was finished, but it is definitely something you have to do as a routine to really see measurable results. And the person doing your facial isn't judging you or thinking negatively about your skin, they see so many people every day that they are just in the moment. And they are there to help you, not to criticize or judge you.
