"People who have an extreme aversion to specific noises—most often “mouth sounds” such as chewing or lip-smacking, but also noises such as foot-tapping, pen-clicking or sniffing—suffer from a condition called misophonia. While many people find some everyday sounds annoying, misophonia—in which the sensitivity disrupts a person’s life—may affect up to 20% of the population, researchers say." I don't generally notice chewing noises; however, my dad used to sort of grind his food with his back molars, and the noise drove me nuts. I also can't stand hearing my dog lick himself. Not sure if that qualifies for misophonia or not. Do you have any aversions to specific noises? (The whole article is here) Misophonia

I think my reactions are probably below the clinical threshold, but tapping, squeaking, slurping, chewing, etc. do drive me crazy. Many of my students will drum on the table or chair, or if they have a pencil, they tap it. I have to be mindfully calm when I ask them to stop, because what I really want to do is scream, "STOP IT!!!!!"
I have a dear friend who has it. She really suffers and sometimes has to leave the room. She turns on white noise or the TV in the background if she has company and she's worried something will set her off.

Yes, I do believe that I have it. I have gotten better, but When I was in college j would leave classes if someone next to me was chewing gum. I really can't stand it and sometimes have the urge to make a comment or even just slap the person to make it stop. There are a lot of Noises that drive me crazy, but gum chewing is the worst.

It's not really specific sounds, although constant tapping, cracking...noises do drive me nuts. For me, it's any noise that lasts for a long period of time. I think it stems back from working in daycare. LOL

Well my dog was just licking himself and I felt all kinds of crazed.
Yes. I have misophonia and several years ago when the Peas diagnosed us all, I felt such a RELIEF that there was a name to what I had and that other people can't stand whistling, for example, or people clicking pens or cutting fingernails (although that one should gross out everyone!).
Whistling is the worst. I have said SHUT UP in stores when people roam the aisles whistling. Not loud, but not to myself either.

I don't know if I would go so far as to say I have misophonia, but there are sounds that annoy me greatly. I can't stand listening to a dog licking itself. Our dogs sleep in the kids' rooms because our previous dog would clean her feet at night. I had to kick her out. It was awful. I also have been known to make my husband sit on the other side of the room to eat. To be fair, he's a noisy eater and doesn't see the problem with his eating habits at all. He doesn't have many bad habits so I guess I'll put up with it.

I have a lot of noise makers in my room this year and it drives me crazy. There are so many sounds that I can tolerate. They seem so loud!!
I used to think there were sounds in my childhood that bugged me just because they bugged me and it was the person doing them, but I realized that I can't stand certain sounds they really annoy me. Not sure that made any sense!

Chewing and my dog licking make me want to go stabby. I hate when dh chews gum. He looks like a cow chewing its cud and sounds worse. He thinks it's funny when I tell him to stop because the sound hurts. He smacks that much worse on purpose. He seriously doesn't get it. The other day I had enough. I flipped out and told him it was rude, immature and dickish. He said he had always chewed gum like that. I told him that's because no one called him out on it.

My DH does. He sometimes has to leave the room when people are eating. He hears sounds that none of the rest of us hear.

Whistling almost makes me homicidal. It's got to be the most piercing noise on earth. Painful.
Other irritating (to me) noises are crinkling bags like chip bags where the person is digging around to grab a handful, silverware scraping on a plate, and nail clipping. I wear headphones pretty much constantly at work to block the noise from the cube farm I sit in.

Can I just say how happy I am that others dislike the dog licking thing? I love my dog so much but I detest that sound.

I wouldn't say I have misophonia but like many of you various sounds drive me nuts, esp repetitive sounds. I'm so glad to see I'm not alone in hating the sound of a dog licking! My dog knows when she's licking and I say 'stop it' she knows what I'm talking about. She does like to be a tad defiant and she'll lick like 3 more times then stop. Little brat!
I can't stand to be around my DH when he chews gum. Mouth open, constant, like a cow with a cud. Ugh!

Yes. Gum popping is the absolute worst sound in the world. Smacking food/lips and nail clippers rate pretty high on the rage-o-meter, as well.

I love my man but cannot stand to be in the same zip code when he is eating chips. Gum popping or smaking, cracking....sends me into orbit!!! Constant, repetitive noises send me DEEP into orbit!!!

I don't but my sister does. While I feel bad for her, it is hard to be around her. If I cough or clear my throat, she practically throws me out of the house. I know she can't help it, but I can't help my occasional cough either. My dad had a condition which caused him to have a chronic cough. When he died, she hadnt see him for 5 years. She said she just couldn't deal with the cough. I was sad for my dad. He once asked me why she hated him he couldn't help it. It broke my heart. Tried to explain why she was like that and she could help it either but he couldn't understand why she couldn't tolerate his cough for a few hours just to come see him She rarely goes to movies because of this but will get out once in a while. She had been known to get up and leave in the middle of a movie and wait for me in the lobby. When I ask why she left, she would say...."that person in the back kept sniffling (or clearing their throat or coughing)" and she couldn't stand it. I, on the other hand, never even heard the person that she was referring to. I can ignore noise like that.

Yes! The things that drive me insane are burping, tapping, whistling and clicking pens.
With three girls in the house there is always burping! My 12 yr. old burped in my face as I was painting and I was so mad! My oldest wasn't a big burper, but she is in college now.
I can't stand tapping (my husband does this in the car and it drives me crazy)! He was never bad before, at least he didn't do it when I was in the car. But now he does it all the time. I don't know if it's because he is getting older or if it's because his commute is 5 minutes (6 yrs. ago he had a 35 min. commute, so he had time to get it out of his system).
Also don't like when he clicks his pen. Not an issue now that he has an office to go to. But when he worked at home for 3 yrs. before he finally got an office, it drove me crazy. So I left the house every day while the kids were at school so I wasn't nagging him nonstop! He only did it when he was on the phone.

I forgot about that one! I guess I have a lot of noises that annoy me. I don't like listening to my husband (and others) eat either. They don't chew with their mouth open, and it's mostly when he eats bread. But I am probably just as bad! I am a loud chewer, so I when I go out to eat with friends, I order something I can eat more "quietly". For some reason, it's the quiet chewing that bothers me more than chips.

DH has it. It doesn't even have to be anything noisy, if someone is chewing anything around him (even with their mouth closed) and he's not also eating, the sound drives him crazy. Once when his mom was alive, he mentioned something to me about how loudly she swallowed and I thought he must be nuts. Then we had lunch with her, and OMG, it was weird how loudly she swallowed and weirder still that I never noticed it until he said something about it! It was a loud GULP! GULP! GULP! sound. Thanks, thanks a LOT for pointing that out, dear! After that it drove me nuts too. And ha ha, last week DD (5) and I went on a little mini road trip with some friends and that kid would just NOT SHUT UP with the goofy air-swishing mouth noises the whole time we were in the car! I kept telling her to knock it off and five minutes later she would start back up again.
