When ds2 was in PICU and then a ward for pediatric nephrology, it was so unexpected that I didn't have time for shopping for a staff gift, but I know the nurses and docs deserved something in addition to my thanks.
I have upcoming surgeries that are scheduled, so I can prepare for everything. I will be in for two surgeries - one on each eye. I want to bring something for the staff to share. What do you think would be good? I was thinking a 2 lb box of Sees chocolate. Would that be good, or would you prefer an Edible Arrangement (fruit).
I want to do something nice for the staff, who put up with so much (including me, who will probably be puking). What would make your day?

I think you are very sweet to think of this. Might I give a strange suggestion? If it will be an overnight stay, I'd save something for the night staff or get two of the things you want to give and give one to the night shift if possible.

I'll be going in at 5:30 am, surgery first thing (around 6:30 am), and then out by 5 pm unless there are complications. So, only daytime staff for now. The staff made all the difference for that week my son was at Stanford Children's and I'd like to do better by them this time now that I have time to plan. |

We really like fruit baskets, vs edible arrangements where the fruit flesh is exposed. KWIM? a fruit basket can sit out and anyone anytime can grab something from it.

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Edible Arrangements on my unit. It is so nice to have a healthier choice (even if chocolate covered sometimes) to munch on. It sounds like a same day surgery unit, so there would not be a true night shift.
And yes, the night shift is often forgotten. I have spent the last 11+ years working with the amazing nurses who work nights.
You also do not have to send something the same day. You can always send something with a little note of thanks later. Mentioning names of employees in a letter to the hospital administration is a particularly kind gift. Many hospitals keep track of that sort of thing and those mentioned get additional recognition.

If there is a coffee shop in the hospital, or a nearby starbucks, get a giftcard that the staff can share on their afternoon coffee run. I know we like that  |

We'll eat anything! We get a lot of See's at Christmas. Throughout the year people bring bagels, donuts, cookies, cakes...someone recently brought éclairs that were so good. I really liked it when someone brought an assortment of cheese, crackers, and cookies from Trader Joe's.

Thank you, everyone!
I've gone ahead and ordered an Edible Arrangement to be delivered to the unit on the day of my first surgery and will figure out what to bring/have delivered for the surgery the following week while I'm there. I sent my mom an Edible Arrangement for Mother's Day and she loved it, so hopefully the nurses and docs will too.
One of the docs called me at home this evening - they are so amazing compared to military healthcare.

I work at a rehab facility and one of the patient's sons has been bringing in apples from his trees. You would think he was dropping off bags of gold bullion the way the staff reacts. |

Food is always a win! I would be careful about a gift card. At our facility we are not allowed to accept gift cards, cash, or anything of value. If we do and admin finds out it is automatic termination.
So nice of you to want to recognize the staff.
