A 65' whale watching boat sank this afternoon off the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC with 27 people on board . They are confirming both survivors and fatalities, but no firm numbers yet. I can't imagine knowing family might have been on the trip and waiting to hear from them. tour boat sinks

Devastating. Prayers for the families. Hoping those still missing are found. Tragic.

So very sad. We have done a whale watching trip like that. I can't imagine the horror.

That is pretty local to me. We have a weird climate and it can turn really stormy in just minutes. The day started off ok but on that side of the Island it is rough to begin with. It is a great surfing area so a whale watching boat in a storm would be vulnerable. My prayers go out to all those affected by this

How tragic. There's always a special poignancy to deaths that happen in the midst of fun, light-hearted activities like whale-watching and homecoming parades. Life is so capricious.

How awful! It sounds like it was one of those freak accidents that had devastating consequences.

There are tons of whale watching companies near me. When I see them go out their passengers are squished like sardines in these little, high-speed, boats that go really fast. The people wear space suits in orange as you tend to get really wet (I am told-I have never been) and you go looking for whales. I don't know if I have ever seen them wearing life jackets, though. I am not sure if it would have made a lot of difference as conditions were bad even though it was mid afternoon. People may not have drowned as easily, though. The threat of hypothermia is very real as that water is cold where we are. My heart goes out to every one of them. It is so tragic when this was probably most of the passengers' bucket list items.

That wasn't our experience at all when we went whale watching in Monterey, CA. We were on a decent sized boat, not too crowded even with about 30-40 people on board. It wasn't speedy, and we didn't have to wear any special clothing. No one got wet. Just the idea of sinking terrifies me. Not only the water itself, but the seals and whales . However cool it is to watch them, I don't want to join them in the water.

I heard about this yesterday, how horrible.
It was such a nice day here on the mainland yesterday, I'm not sure what the weather was like over there, but from thereon out it is open water, ocean.
It wasn't that small a boat, it was a 65' vessel.

We were just in Tofino in August, Jamie's is the main whale watching outfit in town. On larger boats, adults are not required to wear lifejackets. That water is very cold, you really need a thick wetsuit to be in it.

However cool it is to watch them, I don't want to join them in the water. These are Zodiacs and they aren't that big. They aren't a boat boat like the one that went under. They may take 20 people max and they are in there like sardines. princeofwhales.com/victoria-tours/#whale-watching-tour Look at the Zodiac. That's all I have ever seen. Not the covered boat. That must be new as I haven't seen that one before. (I don't go downtown as that's where whale watching in). The zodiac is what I am talking about. There is another company in town who does whale watching tours as well.

It wasn't that small a boat, it was a 65' vessel. The boat they were in was BIG! I have only seen the Zodiacs they have gone out on and never a covered boat. That is something new. I wanted to say it looks safer but I am wrong. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans should come down harshly on this company and all whale watching companies to make sure people don life jackets. That will make sitting quarters too tight perhaps but the companies will have to get bigger boats. TFB. This has shown them that the ocean near me is NOT safe and that a storm can brew. It wasn't even nice out yesterday near the ferry where I was. Tofino is just that much worse. The poor families who lost loved ones. I feel for them. This was probably a chance in a lifetime thing for them-to see orcas in the wild and this happens. The poor poor people and families.
