Ds' friend is coming over to get help on making a map of our state out of food. Well, she's coming here because there likely isn't anything in her house and no one would buy anything to help anyway, but I digress.
Can anyone link me to ideas or even a search term? I looked on pinterest using map, food, kids... I just cannot think of the correct search terms!

can it be ANY food? or does it have to be state-specific? I think it is any food. We are in WV, so she'll need to show mountains, some rivers, trees. I'm not sure how detailed it needs to be - she called me at 7am asking me for help. I'm fine with helping, btw. Ds will be doing this next year so he'll get some ideas.

Candy is always a good choice, but you could "sculpt" with a cheese ball and use pecans, dried parsley, bell pepper, green onions to decorate.

Bake a cake, cut it into the shape of your state, and use candy for the topography.

I have done this with my children in class. I bring in various types/colors of candy. Think of the landscape of the state. What candy works. Mountains = candy corn or snowcaps Rivers = fruit roll ups Capital = some type of star (I don't recall what I used) Important cities = small jelly beans Lakes = could use roll ups

I'm just gonna jump in to say, what a waste of food. What ever happened to Popsicle sticks and glue?

And super impressed by you moms who have helpful ideas! I just went blank when I read the OP...

I'm just gonna jump in to say, what a waste of food. What ever happened to Popsicle sticks and glue? I kind of get the feeling they'll be eating the map. Everything has to be attached with toothpicks/icing/etc. Grosses me out but I've seen these kids eat from gingerbread houses that have been sitting out for weeks. lol

After looking at some pictures, unless the teacher was very specific about materials, I'm going to recommend she do it all in rice - color it for different details. She can color it this afternoon and come back tomorrow to glue it down. Less likely to fall apart in transit and a whole lot cheaper for me!
