This was taking atop union station yesterday. The tower is liberty memorial It's probably around 3/10 of a mile between the 2 locations. They are estimating that 800,000-1M people came for the Royals parade. For a reference, the population of greater Kansas city (Missouri side) is 2.3m The highways were jammed, people abandoned their cars and walked to the parade because there was nowhere to move to! CRAZY! There were no riots, fyi.

My friend went. She likes that sort of thing (people). She said it was a blast.

I saw that, too. Crazy! And I noticed the no riots/problems/etc., too. In fact, the one story I did read was of a guy helping a lost little girl find her family in the sea of people.

When the picture first popped up I flashed to all the Texas bluebonnet pics you see....<< right?!
ETA I am also surprised when you mentioned the population. We have family ( a lot) south of there and have been there a bunch of times and it always seemed so like a little big town to me. Nothing like the traffic I've seen in MUCH smaller cities. Seems more laid back there. But maybe because I'm usually more laid back when there- in "vacation mode".

That is the best pictures I've seen -- did you take it freebird? What I read -- 800,000 people, 3 arrests. MidWest nice at its best!

As much as I wish that parade happened in Toronto that is a VERY cool picture. Also pretty cool that it was s laidback and calm.

Knowing where it would have had to have been shot, I would also be surprised -- but freebird has shot a great photo underwater -- and I know that people were on top of Union Station .... so I had to ask!

That is an awesome photo!
OK, I have to ask because you said there were no riots - when has there been a riot at a championship parade? The night of the winning game we've seen more than a few, but I don't recall ever hearing about one at a championship parade?

People are referencing the crap that went down last year after the giants won.

My DH works at the Ford plant. He went to work yesterday and they didn't have enough people show up to run the transit line, so he was sent home. He came home and said that the Royals win the World Series and Ford losses 1 million dollars. My SIL and 3 of the granddaughters went and they said it was worth it.

I work at the Epicenter of that mess, just across from the Liberty memorial. Our management refused to shut us down and are making angry statements about how long it took people to get in/left early.
Took me an HOUR to go what normally takes 5 minutes at 7:30 in the morning and another hour to get out of it during the rally. I left early thinking I could get out before all the people at the rally did. There was just a sea of people everywhere. People were walking from the plaza to Union station, around 6 miles because there was no parking. It was like the walking dead. We saw people coming down our street all freaking day. Figuring out they couldn't see or hear anything, then turning around and walking back. Cars left on the side of I-35, the exit to get to the downtown area. I've never seen anything like it. I took some photos of the hill from the memorial down to Union Station, but streamed the parade and listened to the rally in the car on the way home. The biggest issue was the sheer number of people. I don't know that we even have a space big enough to hold everyone in the city. Certainly we don't have anywhere they can all park.
I may complain for a bit, but I am so proud to be from this town right now. Something like 3 arrests, many people were just having a great time, and being really cool to let me get to the edge of the platform to take a photo then back out. No riots, no unrest. just love for this team. If anything I'm angry at my employer for not letting us out when it began to be clear how many people were going to show up and how difficult it was going to be to get out.

DH and I took our 2 boys (11 & 9) We sat on the lawn between Union Station & Liberty Memorial (so in the middle of that picture!) From 8:45- whenever the rally ended sometime after 3. I knew it was crowded LOL. But seeing it from that angle makes it feel so much more packed than it felt when I was in the middle of it. I don't typically like crowds either! The atmosphere was incredible! We never felt uncomfortable.
I know the organizers have taken some hits for the way the shuttles were handled. But honestly there was NO way they could expect that many people to show up!
It was an amazing experience to be a part of!

Awesome photo. And 2 things: One I will forever love the Royals for avenging my Cubbies. Two: freebird all these years I had you firmly planted in Montana! Where on earth did I come up with that? LOL. I love KC and enjoy visits there.

So where was the actual parade? I see no streets in those photos! LOL
Crazy! Though I avoid NYC on days like that and they have the space for it and know how to handle the crowds. On Sunday, they had the NYC marathon AND the World Series game. You know what to avoid and schools and workplaces prepare for it accordingly. Dd is sent reminder emails about planning for additional travel time.

Most of my office took off to be there. They brought back cool pictures. My poor DH works near there and it took him over an hour just to get out of the downtown area when he was headed home. I love the Royals, but you could not have paid me to go into that mess yesterday!

The night of the winning game we've seen more than a few, but I don't recall ever hearing about one at a championship parade? The whole celebration after the winning game and the parade has been fun and celebratory. There have been a number of comments about riots because there has been violence after sports teams have won championships, like after SF win last year. www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/world-series-celebration-turns-violent-san-francisco-giants-win-article-1.1992710I think the point is there has been no violence at all..even with close to a million people downtown for the parade. KC kept it very classy and family orientated.

So where was the actual parade? I see no streets in those photos! LOL This picture shows the area in front of the stage (white tent lower right corner) where the rally was held after the parade. If you look at the middle left you see just a corner of the street. Look for the catwalks connecting buildings on the left side of the photo. The parade went under some of those, turned the corner you can barely see. The parade ended just past that.

We have a major street that goes between the location of this photo (Crown Center and Union Station area) and downtown (where the parade started at the Sprint Center). The photo doesn't show the crowds along the 2 mile-ish parade route -- city streets lined with people 10 - 15 deep As to the population question - Kansas City metropolitan area has over a million population - Kansas City, MO proper has a population of 500,000

city streets lined with people 10 - 15 deep I was hearing more like 30 ppl deep and in some places 50. I honestly have no issues believing that half the city population turned out for this. Keep in mind we don't have a decent mass transit system here. The busses were overwhelmed with people waiting 3-4 hours at various places in the city as the mayor asked people to take mass transit. The busses got stuck in the same traffic jam the drivers did and couldn't move people fast enough. Adding to that, it was a gorgeous day here, especially for November. I walked around without a coat on, and saw many people in jeans and T-shirts. You know what to avoid and schools and workplaces prepare for it accordingly The schools let out, all the metro area ones and many of our rural area schools did as well. Many businesses closed. I don't think anyone expected the size of the crowd they got. The city thought 200,000 would show up. They got 800,000 possibly more. TBH, it's astounding it was as well done as it was. With that many people it could have turned ugly quickly and it didn't. We did ourselves proud yesterday.

For those asking about the parade, here's a 60 second time lapse video of the parade from one of the vehicles. www.kansascity.com/sports/mlb/kansas-city-royals/article42764673.htmlI live an hour from the metro area and several friends made the trip in yesterday. One family has an exchange student from Italy and they all went. How great an experience was that?

I left KC Monday morning and missed the parade. Honestly, I am glad I was able to watch it from the comfort of my recliner. Two of my brothers went and it was utter chaos. The best kind of chaos, but yeah. I enjoyed my recliner. I stopped at Rally House on my way out of town Monday, (6:15 AM ish) and they were almost out of everything. Thankfully I am fat and they had my size, but everything else gone. I was glad I got to experience the city during this amazing time. I am glad I got to see the fireworks in my sister's neighborhood. I am glad I got to hear her entire block of neighbors doing the Royals chant after the final strike. I am glad I got to watch Game 4 and a bar full of strangers to get that "collective community" experience. I am proud to say that I lived in that city once not so long ago and I am proud to say that I am a Kansas City fan.
