I am starting to look at either an iPod touch or an iPad mini for my daughter for Christmas. Pretty sure we will be going with at least 32 gig and price is an issue.
That being said, I know I can get more with going with a previous generation iPod touch but what does this really mean inregards to longevity of the item? I know it won't be the latest specs but let's say we go with a 5th generation, will it be upgradable for a while still? Can you still get AppleCare if an older generation is a bought new?
Edit to add: 32 gig vs 64 gig on iPod touch.. Is 32 enough for music and photos?

How old is your daughter? I would get her the iPad mini with wifi access. That way she can use it both at home and away. Get the most memory you can afford. If she runs out of space, then she has to load them some place else.
If you purchase an i____ from a store (Best Buy, Apple, Target) all you need to do is contact Apple and you can get AppleCare.
An older i_____ will become out of date faster. What I mean is it will last a long time, but not as long as a new one. The older generation i______ won't take updates after a certain point. We still have a working first generation iPad. Now, what I haven't done is update it in a REALLY long time. I haven't updated any of the apps or loaded any new apps on it in a VERY long time. We use this iPad for traveling! The internet works.

Thank you. She is 12 and was supposed to get my 4s when I uograded but the wifi stopped working. Wouldn't do her a bit of good lol. Her iPod nano headphone jack crapped out on her 1 week after the warranty expired (although as I write this, I am surprised I am staying with Apple). I have a iPhone 6 and iPad 2 and I want something compatible for messaging so she can get ahold of me easily (when there is wifi).
Other uses, messaging/video conferencing for school projects, camera for photos, and music.
I just saw the mini this afternoon and do think that is the way to go. Time to start scouring BF sales and hope one is available for online purchase!

Check out the Apple site for refurbs. They are basically new and come with a full warranty.

So you're wed to the idea of an Apple device? There are alternatives, and those with expandable memory are an excellent value when compared to the fixed limits on Apple devices.
If Apple is the thing, though, keep looking for refurb. You will probably have to wait until after the holidays for more to hit the supply chain, but if you can wait, there will likely be more choices then.
Good luck! I hope you find a great deal.

Yes due to the fact that is what I have and what most of her friends seem to have. Primary, considering it due to ease of messaging since that is what her friends/classmates have. That being said, what options would you recommend? I honestly have not looked anywhere else. My husband tried an asus transformer but seemed to be cursing at it a lot more than I did at my iPad.

Figure out what you absolutely need. Then, if you find a refurb. on Apple's site that you like buy it right away. The refurb's are limited and sell quickly.

My 11yo son won't be getting a phone anytime soon, but he and all his mates use iMessage on their iPads, and he uses it to contact me as well. If it was a choice between an iPod and an iPad, I would definitely choose an iPad.

That said (and since you askd), I have an iPad and a Galaxy Tab S and love the Tab. I have a Note (cell) though, so the two work together very well (all my Google apps sync and such), which isn't possible with the iPad. There are a few models of Tab, if you're interested in looking at the competition, but it sounds like an Apple device is the best choice. I agree with CeeScraps that you should decide what you want and then buy it as soon as you see a refurb become available, as they do disappear quickly, especially this close to the holidays.

Dd's were bought the day before Thanksgiving through Best Buy's website. It was a flash sale.

For what it's worth my dh still used an original. yes, ORIGINAL iPd. The thing must be 15 years old. All he uses it for is music. For a kid I'd go with newer and bigger. If price is important, pick size over age.

Thank you for the other option than Apple. My husband still in non-Apple but since she communicates mostly with me, chances are we will stay with an Apple device. However good to look at, in case he decides to try a tablet again. Seeing a couple deals for iPad mini 2 and 4 but only 16 gig, which I am going to pass on. Target does have all versions at full price (I believe) but with a $80 target gift card. Unknown if it will be available online, but if only in the store, I will be nowhere near a Target for BF. Going to continue to watch refurbished. How often does that get updated? Is it only the Apple site to watch or are there places that Apple will warranty that sell refurbished?

Go ipad mini. My kids all had/have the itouch. The minute the got iphones, the itouch was worthless to them.
Two of them have an ipad for school purposes. They both use the ipads in addition to the iphone. So i'd most definitely go ipad for dd assuming at age 12 within a couple years she'll likely have an iphone or inherit one of yours. Even with an iphone the ipad will still get plenty of use.

The way I was looking at it, is if I could get a cheap enough refurbished to last her those 2-3 years, I would be ok with that.
