I am looking for a color printer that can print photos but also works well as a stand alone printer. I've read lots of threads on printers specific to printing photos, but was hoping to find some recommendations on a dual purpose printer.
Thanks!

I have a Canon Pixma MP620 (its an older model) probably about 5 years old and it works well for printing photos and regular documents. It has the larger black ink included for document printing and you can fill a cassette with regular paper.
There are better/newer models out now. When I shopped for a printer I wanted at least 4 ink colors for better photo printing and wireless network capabilities. I change the inks as needed although you can get a little more out of it than the printer suggests, and I use the higher quality Canon paper for optimal printing.
I suggest writing down your needs in a printer and comparing models in that range. While price is a factor, you can get a fairly decent printer for around $100 or even less.

I also had to find a new printer that combined documents and photo when my HP 6380 died last week. I bought an Epson XP-630 at Office Depot for $89.99. The quality of the photos is amazing compared to the HP, and the documents are also very clear. I chose the Epson because most printers now use a mixed color cartridge (all HP's) and I don't think that is cost effective. The Epson still lets you change the individual color cartridges when they are out (although I think you still need to buy as a set. My daughter, who is a professional photographer uses several Epson's in her studio and swears by the quality, and I while I do not print all my photos, at home, I appreciate the quality of the Epson. I had also checked around for upcoming Black Friday deals, and this price was $60 off, better than anything listed for Black Friday. I also like the compact size of the printer. Although this one does not have the dual paper trays that I am used to, it is a minor inconvenience with the price and quality.

This is in my price range.

So you are wanting a printer that you do not need to hook up to your computer?

So you are wanting a printer that you do not need to hook up to your computer? Sorry for the confusion. I can have it hooked up to my computer or used via blue tooth. What I meant was that I don't want a printer solely for printing photos. I also need it to print other documents.

If you want a large format - I love my Canon and it is not terribly expensive. It prints great documents and the best photos I have ever had. I used to have an HP, but this Canon is so much better than my HP Photosmart ever was. And faster too. As with any printer, if you set your quality higher and use a good quality photo paper, you get better results. I think it is pretty easy on the ink too. Here it is at Amazon, but you can find it at B&H also with free shipping. I love being able to print larger sizes. The only drawback on this one - it will not print a borderless 12x12. It will print a borderless 13x19, but not borderless 12x12. Drives me nuts. www.amazon.com/iX6820-Wireless-Business-AirPrint-Compatible/dp/B00HM0IVDY

I'm a big fan of Epson printers, I've had several and they've all been amazing.

I'm on my second Canon Pixma printer. The current one is 2 years old and going strong. I print all my photos at home but also use it for word docs and spreadsheets. When it dies, I'llget another Pixma.
My guess is that I paid around $100 for it.

The ink cartridges can jam and ruin the printer if not used.

I bought the Epson XP-630 from Epson.com for 90.00 and free shipping about a month ago. So far I really like it. It's so much smaller than my older printer/scanner. Has two diff trays which is a nice bonus. I've played around with the picture printing and have been quit pleased. I don't plan to use it just for printing pics as I have an Epson Charm for that.

I'm realllllly in love with my canon pixma right now. I got it for my birthday in July and I have no complaints so far. I even went ahead and gave my selphie to a friend, since my pixma prints beautiful 4x6's and I don't need anything for travel. (Plus, I hated how the selphie prints weren't true 4x6's)
