I set a goal for 52 and was doing awesome until July when we decided to sell our house. So, I've stalled at 23 books because who has time to read when they could be searching for houses for hours on Zillow?

I try to read about 100 books a year. I am at 94 now, so I should make it. I have been keeping track of the books I read since 1993. The least I have read in a year is 91 and the most is 139. I keep both a paper record and on Goodreads. 1993, wow! I wish I had started keeping track years ago. After college, I read sporadically, then really got into reading again when my oldest was a newborn. I started keeping track in 2012.

I found when I set a book goal, I try to pick books with less pages. I try to challenge myself to read different books (mystery, bio, science fiction) instead. That being said, I am way down from last year. Lots of other stuff that came up that were more important.

Another Goodreads user here.
My yearly goal is nowhere near as ambitious as many of yours but...I did set a goal this year and I think I might actually make it. . . Only one more book to go.

I didn't set a goal but I do keep track each year of the books read and the total read. 2012 - 71 Books. 2013 - 70 Books. 2014 - 88 Books. I usually don't count until the end of the year, but I just counted and I'm only at 56. Wow, I'm shocked; felt I read more than that. Oh well, I did enjoy them ! PLUS I still have a few weeks left - better get off of 2Peas and start reading !!!

This is the first year I set a reading goal for myself. I have a crazy number of books waiting to be read, and keep buying more. Our library has a massive book sale 3 times a year, with hardbacks for a dollar and paperbacks 50 cents. I've bought over 90 books in the last 6 months. Anyway, I thought setting a goal would encourage me to read more.
Never having done this before, I had no idea what a reasonable goal would be. I was really ambitious and set it for 100. I quickly realized that was completely unreasonable for me. I re-set it to 52, a book a week. I realized a couple of months ago that wasn't happening either. I'm on #32, and think I can get to 40 by the end of the year.
Having a goal really did help me make reading a priority. I think my biggest hurdle was that I tend to like big books. I read at least 7 that were well over 1000 pages, and a couple more over 700.
I like Goodreads, but don't keep it updated that often. I just keep it all in a spreadsheet on my laptop.
