Cashier has me sign receipt. (Never had to do this before!) There was a spot for a tip. What?!?! I've been a server. I understand tipping and do tip well at restaurants and even for togo orders when I pick up an order from a sit down restaurant. This just took me be surprise. (No I did not tip.)

The 'tip part' is probably part of the general cash system that is probably used by many restaurants.
I understand that a lot of cash systems are being changed in the USA due to the more readily available chip cards.

I ordered carry out at a Chinese restaurant today and it had a spot for leaving a tip as well. I think it has to do with the system they use and there might not be a way to change the way a receipt looks. They also had a tip jar.

Carl's Jr. is a large, national corporation. They can pay to have the receipt look exactly like they want it to look. If it has a tip line on it, it's because they want it to have a tip line. I have eaten at their restaurant before (it's been a year or so) and paid with a debit card. The receipt didn't have a tip line.
I think it's stupid and would turn me off their company even further than I already am. (Sex may sell hamburgers, but it doesn't sell hamburgers to me.)

Those tip receipts always throw me off and make me a little anxious and guilty for not tipping as if I'm meant to or something, I can't stand them.

I got carry out Chinese at a place today that only accepts cash or check. I wrote the check over for a small tip and the young guy was very confused. His Mom came over and said thank you, then told him "she always writes over for a tip." There must not be a lot of tippers.

No. Just no.
I agree that Carl's Jr. is large enough to make the recipes configuration be whatever they want.

I don't eat out often, but even I know those tip lines have been around for years. I almost never use them because I don't believe management will always share the tip with the staff. I try to have cash with me to hand directly to the server when I see those tip lines.
ETA reading further I see it's fast food. You do have the option to tip at those places. I don't know if it is still the case, but years ago my sister worked at McDonalds. She was paid below minimum wage, something like $1.10 an hour when min wage was 3.65. This was the wage typically paid in tip type restaurants. In that state it was legal to pay that wage because customers were free to tip the workers. So, McDonald's paid as if workers were also earning tips. Perfectly legal, and because jobs were scarce, people did it.

It's the system. I saw it on a receipt for a GC I bought at a local restaurant.

I just mark through the space for the tip in a case like that.
I can't wait for the day when tipping is eliminated for good.

Maybe it has to do with individual franchise owners upgrading their own systems, and maybe they don't have a standard setup franchise-wide, and certain cards are triggering a CC type receipt with a tip line? IDK. I'm a generous tipper, but not for fast food. Good grief.

I would not tip at a fast food place and I would put a line through the tip space if I used a credit or debit card.

Been that way since I worked there in the 80's. I think the franchisee was feeding your sister a line, McD's corporate would've never gone along with that.

This was Indiana probably about 1986 or 1987. They don't do tips, which is why it was so cruel even though legal. They told staff that because they did not post signs asking customers not to tip, that customers were free to tip. So tips were counted as part of their pay even though they got none. I remember it so well because it seemed so unfair. Of course, they were taking advantage of teen workers! But jobs were scarce and McDonald's had the upper hand. I have no idea if corporate knew or not. I only know that my sister worked there and worked very hard for little money and it was legal. People who quit had a line of workers waiting for that job.

She ran it as a credit instead of a debit. Not a big deal.

Not really understanding the consternation about this. When I sign a charge slip at any place I didn't receive tippable service at, I just mark a line through the tip area. I'm sure my Chinese restaurant is not expecting a tip for putting my takeout in a bag.

I thought restaurants all do this? I'm Not getting the outrage. Just draw a line through the top spot.
My hairdresser now does this too when people pay with debit or credit card. Makes it easier for me to just add on the tip at check out. But I do wish there was no need to tip.

Our debit/credit machines can be set up to have the tip on the machine. So when your total is $30, press ok, then it asks if you want to tip. You can choose $ or % then enter the number. Then it retotals and you continue on with your PIN number. If its for take out you just press ok 3 times to get past tip. Or if you are in a hair salon buying product only they will tell you just press ok to get past the tip, no pressure to leave a tip.

I think it's funny that my local fro yo place has a tip line on the receipt. Because you worked so extra hard at filling the toppings? What? And yes, I get irritated when places like that have a line for a tip because it is like they are expecting one. It makes me nervous that they are thinking poorly of me because I'm not leaving a tip.

I always make sure to put a line through the tip part and write the total on the bottom line. That keeps unethical employees from writing in a tip and new total.
I don't mind tipping my hair stylist--they usually put in more highlighting strips than they charge for and spend extra time, plus my friend from high school squeezes me in when I'm in town. She's amazing and makes my highlights last months instead of weeks.
I was wondering if the local franchise has a new machine.
When I worked for my dad at the airport, we had a credit card machine for fuel and incidentals. It was difficult to use--even with the instructions written down beside it. Different employees were better at working it, but hitting a wrong button could mess it up. Thankfully our bookkeeper was usually in the office and could get on the phone with the credit card company and figure it out.
