I have posted before that my mom had surgery for lung cancer a few months ago. She was told to be careful about getting sick because she is more susceptible to getting pneumonia after the surgery. She also started an inhibitor drug almost two weeks ago. On Monday I talked to her and she wasn't feeling well. Said that she had had a cold but thought it was a sinus infection and was going to get antibiotics when she saw her oncologist Tuesday. I suggested she go Monday so she would feel better sooner and because she said her cough was getting worse and seemed deeper in her chest. She waited until Tuesday. Dr gave her antibiotics and took her off the inhibitor for the week. Said he didn't think there was any concern about her lungs since her cough sounded dry. She has continued to have a fever, which today is going up from 101 to 103. She has been sleeping all of the time. I have never known her to be sick like this. My mom is the kind of person that may have a cold but still goes about her day. She is not one to lay around at all. My stepdad said he might take her to the dr tomorrow but I think he should take her today (ER would be the only option there). He said maybe the fever is increasing for a reason and that might be a good thing? What would you do?

That's a pretty good fever for an adult. With her health situation I'd probably go to the ER today - if it's something more than what the antibiotics can handle, waiting a day could make it worse and her a lot sicker.

A rising fever with all those other factors - I would absolutely go.

Yeah, I'm not one to run to the ER (or any doctor, really) if I can possibly come up with an excuse to avoid it. But with her history and a rising fever ... I'd want her to go.

Yes. And I'm not one to say "go to the ER" lightly at all. Better safe than sorry.

I would tell her to go. That is a very high fever for an adult. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Absolutely. She should not take any chances especially with this being flu season.

Go. 102 is cnsidered high for an adult. She's gone past that and given the circumstances of her recent health, I say go.

She also hasn't been eating much, but I think that is a side effect of the medication she is on.

I would go to the ER also just due to her cancer history.

As a nurse who used to work in Oncology, first call the dr. Then if no answer in 1hr I would go to the hospital they would send her to. She should be calling the dr for any fever over 100. She can become septic very quickly. Call and go.

Glad to hear she's going in. I'm not one to advocate going to the ER lightly, but given those circumstances, I'd absolutely go.

Yes, absolutely and I am normally not a fan of going to ER unless it truly is an emergency.

I'm praying for your parents and you. I hope your mom is ok. I hate that you can't be with her and have to wait for news.
The ER can be busy at thanksgiving--people bring in relatives that they've seen for the first time in months and realize that mom or dad has really gone downhill. It might take a while for you to get any news.
I hope that your mom is doing better soon.

I am glad he called her doctor, that was what I was going to suggest. I hope that she gets some medicine and that it is not serious.

He called her dr and was told to take her in so they are heading there now. Good! DH's oncology team wants him in the ER if his temp is over 100.4. Saying a prayer for your mom.

Turns out that she has strep and when they got there realized that she has hives from the other antibiotic. Hopefully the one they gave her now will work!
