I really wish we could get the subject line longer..
We are going to start one of our first re-model projects this Fall. The guest bath needs to be redone--new counter top and sink, refinish cabinet, new flooring (going from linoleum to tile), new shower door to switch from old brass to brushed nickel, new shower head-brushed nickel and new towel holders.
My husband says we need to pull out the toilet (we just replaced that 3 months ago--we will keep it but just have to pull out and then re install) and the vanity to do the flooring. Is this really necessary? I ask because my husband has a tendency to go completely overboard on projects and usually makes them much harder than they need to be. I don't want it to be substandard work (we will be doing it all) but don't want to do it the really hard way if it doesn't have to be done that way.
What do you say?

Toilet, definitely yes. Vanity can go either way but I would prefer to take it out.

We just had our bathroom floor redone (not by us). They did remove the toilet. They did not remove the vanity.

We pulled our toilet out in both bathroom re-do's. We only took out the vanity in one bathroom because we were replacing it anyway. The other one, we did not take out.

Yes, definitely the toilet and I would take out the vanity as well. Plus it would be easier to refinish it if it's not installed.

In our old house, the counters extended over the toilets in both bathrooms, so when we redid the floors (went from carpet - ew - to tile), there wasn't room to raise the toilet up onto the tile. So, they tiled around the toilet and the vanity.

I would definitely remove the toilet.
The tile could be placed around the vanity but be sure to keep extra tiles in case you want to someday change out the vanity. Even then, the tiles might discolor over the years but almost all of it would likely be under the next vanity.

I would remove both. When my kitchen floor was tiled, they didn't go under the cabinets and it's creating problems for us now. We had a hard time changing the stove, and I am really concerned about having my dishwasher die (it stopp3d working for 2 months and we didn't replace it because it would have meant having to take a chance at breaking the counter top, fortunately it started working again on its own. )
if you ever want to change your vanity for any reason, you will have to get one with the same footprint. If it were just vinyl flooring, it wouldn't be as big of an issue.

Yes, you need to remove the toilet to install new flooring. I probably wouldn't remove the vanity. However, I would keep some of the tiles in case you decide to replace the vanity some day. A few years ago I wanted to replace my vanity, but didn't want to replace the flooring. I was unable to find a new vanity with the same "footprint" so I ended up just painting the existing vanity.

I would probably remove both for issues stated above.

We just had our bathroom floor redone (not by us). They did remove the toilet. They did not remove the vanity. Us too! We used a well known contractor in our area and this I exactly what they did.

The tile will be thicker than the existing floor. That's why it matters, especially for the toilet.

We just had one of our bathroom floors done and they left our vanity but removed our toilet.

I'd remove the toilet but the vanity could stay if you're sure it won't be replaced any time soon.

We are in the process of renovating our kids' bath because of a leak. Yes to taking out toilet. Vanity depends on if you are replacing it. We replaced ours with a much smaller one and got rid of the weird countertop extension over the toilet. Much better! I agree with you wanting to do it right when you are doing it yourself. You will be happier with the end result. We put down tile, installed new toilet, new lighting and put white beadboard on the walls. Only thing left is some caulking and the new vanity/sink/faucet. We need to sand and stain the new vanity this weekend and hopefully install it.

Having extended family in the business: both is best, next best is toilet and not vanity, least best is neither. Don't forget the before and after photos.

Like everyone has already said, yes to removing the toilet. Since you're replacing the countertop anyway I would definitely remove the vanity and run flooring under it since it's tile. It wil give it a more finished look and make it easier to replace if you ever decided to do that.

Have almost completed a bathroom / toilet renovation and agree with all the others - you really do have to remove the toilet. Personally I'd also move the vanity - you will get a far better finish and the vanity will look as if it's sitting on top of the floor (as it should) rather than the floor tile being slightly above the bottom of the vanity. So yes - I'm afraid I agree with your DH on this

YES! We have a bathroom we need to redo because the people before us tried to place the Pergo around the toilet without pulling it out. It looks ridiculous. You can totally tell. Pull it out.

We are getting ready to do this as well and will be removing both. Granted we have to level the floor, but regardless we would have been taking both out. You just never know how many layers of flooring are under there or what may need to be fixed/corrected depending on how old your house is

I would do both. The tile flooring will sit higher than the vinyl flooring you currently have, so when you are standing in front of the vanity, it will feel shorter to you. Plus, if you ever change the vanity, you might not get one with the same footprint as your current vanity. In the grand scheme of things, removing and reinstalling both will not take up that much more time and effort than having to cut tiles and work around existing fixtures.

Yes, remove both. When we bought our house, we replaced all the toilets. The toilet in the master bath hadn't been moved when they installed the flooring. The new toilet was a different size so we had to replace the flooring since there was a gap.

Toilets are very easy to remove and reinstall. All you need is a new wax ring to make sure you get a good seal. I have never removed a vanity to install flooring, but we weren't replacing them.

I would remove both. If you don't remove the vanity, leave extra tiles in case you ever change the vanity so you can fill in holes.
