I am a bit freaked out right now. A year ago I had an abnormal pap. Was called back six months ago for a repeat and at the time I was given the all clear. I was specifically told that if I am questioned in the future about having an abnormal result, my answer should be that I have never had one. The last few months I have been spotting… totally new for me. I am on low dose birth control, same kind and same way of taking it that I have done for years. I figured it was a nuisance but not a huge deal because after all - two pap tests this year, given the all clear. Anyway, I called the doctor about it today and their response was that they want to see me ASAP. Now I am freaked out about it. Has anyone had anything similar? If you had spotting suddenly start when you'd never had it before, what did it turn out to be? Of course I've convinced myself right now that I have cervical cancer. Damn internet.

I've had this happen and had a normal biopsy. The spotting continued and my doctor switched my dosage. I was on the lowest dose of hormones before. Now that she increased the dosage, my breasts ache. Can't catch a break!
I hope everything is ok with you!

Could be lots of things other than cervical cancer. Could be hormonal. Could be rough sex-a penis hitting the cervix can bruise it or cause minor bleeding, as could small tears in the vagina. Not a doctor but someone who had a very similar experience many years ago and had a doctor be very reassuring.

I do have some experience in this area having had Stage 2 cervical cancer. The big sign for cervical cancer is spotting after intercourse, not general spotting whenever. I don't think you need to panic at all. There's a huge gap between abnormal paps and cancer. The fact you had an unclear pap followed immediately by a clear one makes me think you have nothing to worry about. Feel free to ask if you have questions about my experience. I'm an open book on this subject. Get your paps!

How old are you? Perimenopausal?
There are so many things that can cause abnormal paps and so many things that can cause spotting.
It is likely the two are not even related.
Don't worry until you have something to worry about. You are being proactive by seeing the doctor. Take some deep breaths until you know what is going on.

Cervical erosions ( which are benign ) can cause spotting . You shouldn't be panicking at this stage- I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in May and had no symptoms at all. You have have had two recent clear smears ( which I hadn't!)

Thank you all. Hearing so many different experiences definitely helps. Spotting isn't after sex, it's consistently the last week or two of my cycle. I turned 40 this year. And thankfully, I don't have any other symptoms that I have been reading about in my attempt to self-diagnose - no bladder problems, other pain, weird discharge, etc.
Still. I don't think I have ever looked forward to a gyn exam this much, to just know for sure what is going on.

I just went through this. After an exam and ultrasound my doctor decided it was hormonal and switched my birth Control. I hope it ends up being nothing serious for you, too!

I know how scary it is because I too have had spotting, but it ended up being my thyroid. Now I have to take a low dose thyroid pill but it did stop the spotting. Don't worry I'm sure it's nothing. It's so easy to freak out but try not too. I've also have had abnormal pap and it was nothing too. hugs
