Geesh! I am not a fan of cash or gift cards particularly since it's my own dd. however everything they 'play' with is on their phones! I like to get at least one gift that is hands own ie something to build, play with etc even for my DH but this year I am struggling for both dd and dh. I am starting to feel the pressure of the countdown! Ok whine over...maybe.
ETA DD is 14.

How old is your DD? Mine is always thrilled with age-appropriate crafty stuff... she has a sewing machine, basic sewing supplies, basic knitting supplies, a small stash of quilt fabric and a quilt in progress. She also loves sketchbooks, watercolours and pencils. My 11 year old DD loves sculpting, making tiny things, and also sews (by hand and by machine).

My 16 year old asked for an adult colouring book ... would your teen be into that?

I agree! I have three pre-teen/teen girls and it's so hard to get ideas for them. I don't mind doing the gift cards because they never like what I pick out. And I have lost receipts so often with all the busyness of the holidays and all the traveling we have to do. Then I can't always return the item or get what I paid for it in an exchange. So I started buying them gift cards to the stores they love and getting them cheaper gifts to open (funny socks are a big hit with the teen boys and girls in our area, nail polish, candy, junk food, etc.)

We always get them each a new board game and then play them over the holiday. I don't as a general rule buy my own kids gift cards.

I just asked my 14 yr old what she wanted for Christmas because I'm stymied. You know what she said? Toe socks and nail polish! Really, she'd rather get or make gifts for others than get them herself, and she's long said her favorite part of the holiday is getting kids in need everything on their wish list and then some, but she would be disappointed if there wasn't anything under the tree for her. It seems to me that each year a different one of my kids is the difficult one. I'll probably end up doing craft supplies because she loves all kinds of crafts.

Nail polish is fun for a teenage girl usually. A quality make up collection is also fun. Tarte, Urban Decay, etc all have fun compacts out right now. I always love buying a teenager books if they like to read. Perhaps she would like one of those "Wreck this Journal" things that are popular right now.
If she is eclectic with her clothes choices....perhaps some fun colored tights to wear with boots and dresses?
And if she does not have a charm bracelet...it is a great idea to start one and then you can continue to give her charms for each special occasion that happens over her lifetime.

I still buy my adult sons Legos. They love to sit and put them together.
I also bought adult coloring books and pencils for the teens and young adults on my list this year.

My DD is 16 and very into the theatre scene. She asked for:
-theatre tickets (to see Hamilton on Broadway, but Jersey Boys is coming (somewhat) locally) -a cooking class at Sur La Table (we've done a few of these together--very fun.) -Firecracker tea from Spices and Tease (they have a shop in Union Station and Chelsey Market, but are also online) -Naked Palette -earbuds (my kids go through a few of these a year)
DS is away at college and really just needs money. He is getting a few books, winter gloves, a DVD, a flannel shirt and a suitcase. I'm just going to put the gift cards in the shirt pocket, in a box of movie theatre candy, in a case of Pepsi... dumb stuff that I wouldn't normally consider a Christmas gift, but better (in my mind) than just opening a gift card. And he hates clothes and I never give them to him as gifts, so he will be a little "what the heck." hehehe...

What about a basic tool set? I was given one and I used the heck out of it. Or how about a subscription to ipsy or something else she's interested in. My tween loves stuff like that.

We just ask 16 yr old dd what she wants and she tells us a variety of things in different price ranges. She asked for a snowboarding beginner lesson. Then she also asked for different things from nail polish to thermal underwear.
We always give her a couple gift cards. It was a great way to introduce her to budgeting (clothes) and social situations without parents (movies/restaurants).

What about a book on hairstyles or makeup? Maybe paired with a lovely set of brushes or combs.

My 15 dd and 16 ds are easy. Clothes, they both love clothes. Athletic stuff for DS. Books for DD.
13 DS not so easy. He is not into clothes AT ALL and would wear the same thing day in and day out if I let him, which of course, I don't. Past the toy age. Semi-athletic in that we require him to play two sports a year but not to the extent of his brother. We asked what he wants and He wants DH to build him an ANT FARM! And he will but He is 13 and I can't help but wonder what his friends will think when he has a giant ant farm in his room, rofl. But still, at his age, he will lay on the ground during the summer and watch ants work, for hours. He loves ants.

My teen boys were very hard to buy for but my teen dd is probably the easiest person in the world to buy for and she always has been. My problem is she's so easy to buy for that I don't know where to stop!
Here are some great ideas for her--some of these she's getting this year, others are just things she would like or things she's had in past years:
Clothes: she loves sweaters, Hot topic T-shirts, plaid skirts, dresses from Mod Cloth, jeans Jewelry: she loves a variety but she really wanted Steam Punk style stuff this year and a locket. She also loves the jewelry at Hot Topic and the rubber band bracelets. Band Merch: Stuff from her favorite bands (Muse, Green Day, Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, etc.) and that includes posters, CDs/digital music, bracelets, etc. Movies: She loves horror flicks and Loki (she wants to own all the Marvel movies with Loki in them--so far she only has 1 I think) Board games: Cards Against Humanity, Apples to Apples, Exploding Kittens, Munchkins, and she would love a end of the world game like Pandemic Make-up: all kinds Art supplies Books: she loves horror; this year she's getting Stephen King's newest book of short stores. Also her very favorite book is Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon; there's a really cool pop-up version of this book that I got off ebay (out of print) and she's getting that. Beannies: She loves all kinds of these Socks and tights: She loves knee socks and over the knee socks in both regular styles and fun ones (like socks with sloths or foxes on them) Décor for her room (she's redecorating her room with a Halloween theme so any cool stuff to put on her shelves, posters, throw pillows, throws, etc. to match that). She loves to design and sew clothes so she would love a dress form, cutting mat, cutting tools, fabrics, etc. She loves to cuddle and watch movies so she's getting fuzzy pjs and the Big One throw from Kohls She loves to cook and she collects aprons so cool cookbooks, aprons, and fun supplies She plays soccer, volleyball, and softball so anything for that (although she has most of the supplies now) She loves theater so tickets to a local play would be awesome She loves video games and has asked for a couple; I know that one of them is Fall Out 4
I really could go on and on. Like I said, easiest person in the world.

My 16 year old asked for an adult colouring book ... would your teen be into that? Same. I got her that and the nice colored pencils she has been wanting. Does she like puzzles? Or sudoku? you could do a book. Maybe a strategy style board game that engages the brain and you could all play together? How about a hobby? Photography? Knitting? My teen doesn't want to "play" with things. She doesn't want to build or craft stuff, some people just don't. But I agree getting off the phone is a necessity.
