It seems like the whole population is silent. And the procession stops when people throw flowers so that they're not run over and can be moved to the side.

Oh Juliet, I don't know how anyone could criticize what's happening. My heart goes out to everyone.

I probably see the highlights on the news tonight. That is probably all I could take anyway. I am not sure I could watch it live.

It's comforting to see such a familiar sight on the television. Our highways, our meadows, our people along the route. The cars, driving from Eindhoven (where I work) to Hilversum. I'm relieved that they are coming home.
My husband, children and I were on the highway when the ceremony started. Everyone parked their cars on the highway and everything was silent. It was a beautiful, yet heartbreaking moment.

I've been watching it this morning and it's brought tears to my eyes. Juliet, my heart goes out to everyone in your country (and around the world) who has been affected by this tragedy.

I shed an extra tear when I saw your King Willem briefly hold Queen Maxima's hand to comfort her.

So sad. I just watched some of it after seeing this thread. Question... will all the bodies be coming to this one Dutch town (the one where they just brought this first convoy of hearses) to be identified? One of the announcers said that they don't know yet who the bodies are. At first I thought they'd already been identified and these were the first Dutch citizens being brought home, but it doesn't sound that way. How horrible.

The BBC said that all the victims would go to that same place in the Netherlands for id processing and then would go on to wherever home is. Nobody knows yet who has arrived today and the Dutch have said that it could take days, weeks, months perhaps to identify all of the victims, though some would be able to be done very quickly of course. A Government spokesman said that there would be a reception for all victims arriving there and that all relatives would be very welcome to attend one or all the ceremonies if they so wished.

A huge Disaster Victim Identification Team is ready to identify all the victims. They are from different disciplines and from all over the country. They have worked at several internation disasters (eg the 2004 tsunami, 2002 Bali attacks and several plane crashes) Their work starts immediately, they do not work 9 - 5 and during the work, they sleep at the military complex. As soon as they have identified the victims, they will be brought to their home countries.

I hope the world will see how much it has affected all of us. I hope people will think we're doing this to the best of our abilities. Oh Juliet I don't think no one would think any other. The arrival and transportation was done with the utmost of dignity. I'm sure that all the other countries affected by this tragedy are thankful and grateful that your country, which is faced by it's own overwhelming grief are also gracious enough to take care of their loved ones until such time that they can also be taken home, whichever that country might be. Sadly there will be more days like today for all of you. ((((hugs)))

No, at this stage they haven't formally identified any of the bodies - everyone is being taken to the same place and then experts from all over the world will start to identify them. Families have already started to supply DNA, dental records etc to help with the identification.
I was just watching a bit on our news and one of the officials there (didn't see who he was as it was just a voice over) said that no-one knew who was in any of the coffins as they went by... "so today every one of them is Dutch, every one of them is Australian, every one of them is Malaysian..." Made me tear up.

My heart is with the people of the Netherlands... So many were lost from such a small population. The way the nation has handled this has been very moving.
My heart is also with the families of those who were lost regardless of nationality.
I saw an image of a flower shop that was owned by a couple who were traveling on that flight. The piles of flowers for them outside the shop rather than inside was very striking and heartbreaking. The images from today were very respectful and still so heartbreaking.

I haven't seen any of the coverage yet, but I can only imagine how heartbreaking. Reminds me of what a small world we really live in. Thank you to all the Dutch for mourning all, no matter their country.

Two planes just landed in the Netherlands with more of the victims from Ukraine to another beautiful, and very sad, 'welcome home' ceremony for the victims with government officials and relatives in attendance.
