I had surgery 11 weeks ago to repair my shattered tibia and knee. I have about a 10 inch scar from the surgery. It's red and slightly puffy. My PT works on it and I rub on it nightly to get it to start flattening out, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good scar cream that actually works. I'm not overly self conscious about it, but I would like the color to fade a bit.

Maderma. It worked on my daughter's hole like scar. It filled it in and smoothed the skin.

There are some silicone sheets you can purchase...ask the PT about it.

Kelocote as soon as the scab is gone. You can also get sheets of silicon scar stuff. Both are available on Amazon.

I asked my dermatologist about this a few years ago after I had melanoma surgery. He said that studies had shown that Vaseline was as effective as any other scar cream on the market.

I had similar scars on both knees from replacements. Scar cream did nothing, but over time (maybe a year) the scars flattened and lightened considerably. They're pretty much skin color now. You just need time.

I used both Mederma and Emu oil, my surgeon told me that the massaging of the oils is as important as what you use, so make sure you massage whatever you use in well. My scars look pretty good, it does take time tho.

My facial surgeon recommends Aquaphor. He removed a little tumor around my eyebrow. It left no visible scar.
My foot surgeon recommended Mederma. It worked on my bunion scar.

You just need time. Thanks for sharing your experience. I just started worrying today because the guy next to me at physical therapy had the same surgery as me a week before mine and his scar is so light colored and completely flat. Mine looks like the scars of Frankenstein's monster!

the scars heal from the inside out, so it will take time for it to fade. It will. I had a nasty scar from my hysterectomy. I have a blood clot disorder and got heparin before surgery. The blood clotted at the scar and formed a clot the size of a beef liver! I had to put the thickest period pads on the incision because the clot was oozing blood through gauze so quickly. It took months for the scar to heal. It was in a bad spot--right where the tummy hits the pubic bone so if you have any abdominal swelling or fat, there's a crease. Nice.
My mom shattered her wrist and had a huge scar. She kept rubbing it with lotion, and it finally faded after about a year. It turned white, so she would rub her fake tanner on it and just covered it with concealer until it faded. She then had to have another surgery because she rebroke the wrist--went tubing because she thought she'd break it if she fell skiing. It's been several years and the scar isn't visible at all--even when you know where to look.

Bio oil. there are scar patches you can buy at the drugstore, ask pharmacist, they go on scar for a time period, and really minimize. I haven't used them, but others with ICD scarring swear by them.

Vit E oil...break the little capsules that you'd take as a vitamin supplement.

Vit E oil...break the little capsules that you'd take as a vitamin supplement. This, have heard this from two different MD's. Another thought if it is raised is ask the physical therapist about it. I had surgery on my wrist and the scar/skin was raised. When I had PT the therapist had this clay like thing that became somewhat hardened and she put it in a small sleeve. I was to wear it nightly on my wrist I guess to put a little pressure on the scar. Whatever the case, worked like magic and the scar flattened. Time will lessen the redness of it also, my scar is nearly invisible, you wouldn't know it was there unless I actually point it out to you.

Bio Oil. Has worked miracles on everyone to whom I've recommended it.
