I googled it and you can use coconut oil. I just wondered if anybody had. Wanted to keep it vegan.

You can really use any type of fat to season it. Coconut oil will be fine, I've done it.

The first pan I did, I used vegetable oil. The second pan I did, I used coconut oil. I feel the pan I started with vegetable oil is seasoned better. Granted after the fact, I do use coconut oil. But the first couple of seasonings I'd use vegetable oil.

I use canola oil on mine, we use them every day, but have used coconut oil and it works fine, esp. after the initial seasoning. Love my cast iron.

i only opened this to recommend using it for bacon....and thereby seasoning it at the same time
alas.....
may i ask what you plan to use the pan for?
it seems i mainly use mine for things that aren't exactly vegan?

Gina. I'll probably use it for non vegan stuff. I don't know what I was thinking. My daughter is vegan and I was thinking about her but didn't think about WHAT I would be cooking in the pan. I used coconut oil but haven't cooked in them yet. I got two of the pioneer woman's cast iron pans for Xmas.
I've never had or cooked in cast iron. What is your favorite thing to cook in them. I am not a deep fryer person so I won't be doing that.

then i won't recommend pan friend chicken! or chicken fried steak
i do make fried potatoes in mine...and it doesn't require a lot of oil/grease if the pan is seasoned well
and if it's not going to be vegan - i strongly recommend using an animal based fat to season it...bacon, lard, crisco
even if that isn't going to be your primary fat
once it's seasoned correctly they don't require nearly as much fat/grease/oil
my small skillet is old - probably 40 years old - i got it twenty years ago - it's better than a non stick pan
i can make scrambled eggs with no butter in the pan - it's crazy good
but it's also been used by southern cooks - and has all those years of seasoning
i make a mean cornbread in mine.... as well as pineapple upside down cake
i use it like you'd use any skillet
at some point....try pan fried chicken - it's totally worth it

My Dad uses a thin layer of Wesson oil. He says he puts on a coat, lets it season, repeat.

I used Crisco when I did mine. ...and, if I remember correctly (you may want to goggle to confirm) that Crisco is considered vegan...
