I read several blogs of different genres and I've seen the following grammatical error on more than one occasion! "Bob and I's anniversary", or other similar statements!

If an errant apostrophe is on a dry erase board (such as in a store or restaurant), I have been known to erase it. Me too! I always do it on the sly... with my grammar police partner watching on. We then giggle like madmen and people look at us strangely.

You all must know how less stabby I feel to know that I am not alone. I still want to smack the schmuck, but I feel less alone. Does anyone else follow Grammarly on Facebook? Love them. Yes I so but they're not beyond a mistake or two themselves and that's BEYOND frustrating!!

And don't you wonder why this is suddenly such a common error?

A sweet man at our church carved our name and wedding date in a beautiful piece of marble when we were married. He used the apostrophe after our name. I know he spent a lot of time on that plaque and I will always treasure it because of that, but I keep it kind of tucked away in our study. I just can't get past the grammar mistake.

If an errant apostrophe is on a dry erase board (such as in a store or restaurant), I have been known to erase it. Ha! Good for you. Observing in a kindergarten classroom, I was seated right next to the bulletin board that said "Look whose here today."I verrrrry covertly peeled the "e" off the end of WHOSE, tore a makeshift apostrophe from the tail of the stolen letter, and thumb-tacked it between the "o" and "s" to make a WHO'S. I stashed the rest of the "e" in my pocket. I often wonder if the teacher ever noticed. Yes, I was there professionally. Yes, I was bad.

As an English professor, that errant apostrophe drives me batty especially since those who typically throw it in where it doesn't belong REFUSE to use it in possessives where it is required. I understand that it is my job to teach students to write better, but they're in college! How did they miss the simple rules about apostrophes in their previous 12+ years of school?

Don't even get me started on "your" and "you're". English isn't even my mother tongue and I can easily tell the difference. The plurals with apostrophes is bad, but it's the "your" for "you're" that makes my go "aaaaggghhh." "Your welcome." *Ellie's head explodes*

I always pause and think when I have to use an apostrophe!
The one that drives me absolutely insane, is "I seen blah blah blah"
It is I SAW, not I SEEN - ack!!
I took a sugar flower class a few weeks ago, and the gal I shared a table with was always saying "I seen that" - oh my goodness, it was all I could do not to say something!

I have often thought to myself if some people have always made these types of mistakes or if it has gotten worse because of texting and/or general laziness. Once something becomes a habit such as shorthand using in texting it is hard to break it.

And don't you wonder why this is suddenly such a common error? I will probably get lynched for this, but I am laying (at least part) of the blame squarely on the reliance on technology. If I type a formal document in Word, not only is my spelling checked, but so is my grammar-but only to a point. With a grammar correction, there is no explanation as to why it is wrong-just how to fix it. You don't learn the rules. Not only that, the reliance on the grammar check makes you not see the ones it misses, the assumption is that if the program missed it, then there are no other problems. People have gotten lazy. /end rant

Now I realise that not everyone has the opportunity for a great education and not everyone is able to learn the rules of grammar and spelling easily but I'd say that applies only to a minority....that same % probably as in previous years (give or take).....so why are huge numbers of people making these mistakes now? It's not just youngsters. Once you've learned the basics - and making plurals are basics - why do you suddenly need spellcheck? Why would you forget what you've previously known?

All of these bother me as well. The worst is in books. Self-pubbed books. When the author brags about how great his editor is. And when she is obviously NOT great because she left in tons and ton's (!!!! ) of errors. Although I must confess... I did not understand the difference between it's and its until my college professor explained it to me. I have no idea how I missed it all those years. But it was like it finally just "clicked" for me. I taught for years. All grades, all ages. In every grade I taught, I gave the following spelling words: to, too, two; there, they're, there; your, you're; here, hear; and its, it's. I think there were a few more as well. I am feeling a bit "stabby" today. I just love that expression. A new "pea-ism." Lisa

I notice this all the time now, because of two peas! Funny!
The one that makes me want to jump up and down and scream is the incorrect use of loose and lose. Whenever people type that they want to loose weight, it takes all I have to not correct them immediately. I have no idea why that is so hard for people. The trouble is, the more it is wrong, just like the apostrophes, the more it becomes common usage.
As in the incorrect pronunciation of Iroquois that I brought up on a thread a few days ago. The incorrect pronunciation is apparently an acceptable alternative!!! Who knew? Didn't they know they need to consult ME about this?
Thanks Grinningcat!

Another one that makes my skin crawl....the incorrect use of "myself". As in, if you need help with something, contact myself. AGH! It's contact ME! ME! ME! Why can people not say "me". Athletes do it all the time in post game interviews. I wonder if people think using the word me is selfish or just not fancy enough. Can't stand it.

There's a radio station around here that has a tag similar to "Hampton Road's best music". NO NO NOOOOOO!!! It should be "Hampton Roads' best music". I want to scream every time I see it.

I know that it is learned in school, but whereas when I was in school the lessons would have been reinforced every time I wrote and submitted paperwork as I had to edit it myself and if I missed something, it would have been graded accordingly. That doesn't happen so much anymore and the lessons aren't being reinforced they way they were "in the before." I can't speak to the old people (LOL as I consider myself one) maybe it is because we forget? I am that way about math. I can't remember a lot of what I learned in math classes. Grammar and spelling I remember more because my college courses reinforced my writing skills?

OH... I have a question related to this.
Let's say I wanted to say more than one VIP. is it VIPS? I will admit to adding an apostrophe to VIP's so ppl know what I mean.
Today I did correct someone's meme that said "hero's" when they meant "heroes".

A perfect solution to something that would have driven me right off the edge, I also work at school. The thing gets me about the misuse of apostrophes is the way some people make a list: Apple's Orange's Grapes Pear's What, the grapes miss out on the bad punctuation? Why? What drives the placement? There's a website I shop that sells seeds (sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc). On almost all of their category labels they used apostrophes. Seed's, Dried Fruit's, Grain's, etc. After seeing that a few times I felt compelled to write to them and let them know (nicely) that it looks unprofessional. They actually changed it! I don't know why I'm surprised but I am.

Today I did correct someone's meme that said "hero's" when they meant "heroes". VIPs. I know it's hard for people (the ones who aren't grammar nerds, I mean) but most of the time you feel the urge to add an apostrophe, you probably don't need it. I also agree with the PP who said '70s, not '70's. And if we're having a who's-the-nerdiest-grammar-nerd competition, I have been known to take a craft knife to my rubber stamps when I don't approve of the punctuation.
