Last December our family made a goal to get rid of 2,015 items in 2015. We have so much stuff!!! Our entire 2,600 sf house seemed packed to the gills. So we made it our goal to get rid of stuff as well as make presents more about memories/experiences than stuff. Trips to the amusement park for birthdays rather than lots of gifts, concert tickets instead of clothes. Stuff like that.
I took the tubs to Goodwill to donate the stacks we had stored in the garage and finally sold some of the stuff I needed to.
I knew we had made our goal as I had been tracking in my mind but today I officially put down all the numbers from the recent donations and sells and we made it!!!!! Woo hoo!!!!!
We got rid of 2,180 items in 2015!!! And I still have a few items that are listed for sale on Facebook so we may have a few more to add to the list.
I already told everyone that we were shooting for another 2,016 items next year. It's still too easy to go find 50 items without thought, which means we have too much stuff.

Awesome idea! We did a fall yardsale at my office instead of the usual spring one. Did not fare so well so all of that stuff needs to get out of my garage!

I really like this idea. I doubt I would get rid of that many items in a year though I certainly could! I noticed on some of the pea Christmas photos there was not one sign of clutter or knickknacks to be seen. I don't have a corner or wall that isn't filled with stuff.
I think I will try to get rid of 30 items a month - one for each day starting Jan 1st. That seems like it could be fun to just add stuff to a bag and then every month drop it off someplace.

That's sooooooo awesome! We are the same way. I look around and think to myself. WHY IN THE WORLD ARE WE KEEPING THIS?!
Then, I need to get rid of it!
I started reading organization tips and blogs online today. So hopefully, I can make great progress like you have done in the coming year!

What a neat way to make the goal of minimizing into something fun! And congratulations.
If I could only get my husband on board... lol.

My kids thought it would be impossible but once we started going through drawers and closets we just kept pulling out stuff. Clothes jammed in the back of drawers that didn't fit, we found about 30 pairs of those cheapy gloves in the coat closet. Seriously, why do we need that many! I donated about 400 things from my craft room alone. Magazines, fabric, scrapbooking stuff, ribbon. It all adds up quick! I think 30 items a month is a great place to start! It's a good feeling to get rid of stuff that is cluttering up the house!

We moved in June and I got rid of so.much.stuff. Now that Hanukkah has happened and birthdays are coming up, I really want to do another round.

Congrats. We moved a little over a year ago and I thought we had purged a lot and we did but not nearly enough. We have continued to purge and we have made progress but I hope to make more in 2016. It amazes me sometimes that I decided some of this stuff needed to move with us. My goal for 2016 is to continue to purge and get the house organized the way I want it. I am not happy with the way things are currently organized space just isn't well utilized. I want more empty space.

I love this idea. I have also been entertaining the idea of keeping track of things I see that I really think about buying, but decide against. Our recent trip to Disney was a challenge. I know I carried lots of things around shops before returning them, and I'm so glad I didn't bring all that stuff home. When we started this it really makes you think about what you buy! I'm a big crafter so I really have to think things out and make very specific purchase or I just go crazy! I've been trying to use more of what I have on hand and only buying the essentials to just finish a project. Places like Joann's and Michaes are bad for me so I tend to just stay out! I've cancelled magazine subscriptions which I wasn't even reading because they just stacked up. I boight some new work clothes this summer so I donated a bunch to balance out. I've realized that just because I have the biggest house among all my cousins it doesn't mean I need to store a bunch of my deceased grandmas belongings. That was a big one! We had whole sets of her furniture and boxes of pictures and dishes that no one else wanted but my mom didn't want to get rid of. I told my mom it had to go. She and her siblings rented a storage unit and moved it all in there. My basement looked fantastic after that!!!! But oh the guilt!

My big goal for 2016 is to try to use only what I have in my sewing/craft room and not buy any new projects. I plan to only purchase things needed to complete projects I already have the supplies for (quilt batting, thread if I need a color I don't have, a pattern to use with fabric I already own). While I am going through the room, I plan to donate or eBay anything I don't love/need anymore. Do you just get rid of stuff as you go along, or do you pick a specific room/area to tackle then move on?

Awesome! I hate clutter and do my best to toss/donate items several times a year. It's something you really have to keep up with or it'll take over the house.

Do you just get rid of stuff as you go along, or do you pick a specific room/area to tackle then move on? My girls were in charge of their rooms and every couple weekends I would tell them to go find 50 items. They found toys, clothes, books, etc. But then I tackled room by room. The kitchen gave up tons of cook books, gadgets, a gazillion water bottles! My bedroom was clothes and shoes mainly. The bathrooms gave up lots of fingernail polishes, all those lotion sets you get as gifts but never use! And my craft room. Oh Lordy! Dh tackled the storage room and garage. There was stuff in those that belonged to the person we bought the house from! I worked on one room at a time, my girls and dh just grabbed willy nilly!

I think if I got rid of that much my house would be empty! I'm not a knicknack person, so don't have much of uneeded stuff.
I do plan on going through each room/closet/drawer, etc and not only purge but give everything a good cleaning, touch up paint that needs it etc. My goal is to do a top to bottom cleanl/purge of 1 room a month (I have 10 total to do)

When I moved out of our huge home in 2010 to a much smaller place, by myself, I really did a huge purge! I now live in a condo with the storage space in my own unit/suite. Everything I own is in my 1,100 sq ft living space. For every bag of "stuff" that comes into my place, I make sure that at least 1 bag of "stuff" is donated or purged, except quilting fabric as that fabric is made into a quilt.

Impressive! Every time i try to declutter I have to deal with dh, eg neighbor gave him a box of books when he moved and i looked at them and they were all books you probably can't even donate, eg kama sutra and other books like that. If course dh thinks it would be funny to give it to someone as a gag so i have a box of books i don't want. ..or cook books, i got rid of most of mine but dh still wants to go through his even though he hasn't looked at them in 10 years. I should just go toss a bunch of junk but it's so difficult!

I should just go toss a bunch of junk but it's so difficult! Books were a bunch of what we got rid of! I love to cook so people tend to give me cookbooks as gifts. Plus we are all big readers so we had hundreds of books. I bet we got rid of at least 200 books and cookbooks. Most books were donated but there were a few that had missing pages curtesy of the baby that we had to toss. We cleaned off 3 shelves of our bookcase. We still collect books, but now it's mostly electronic versions. And free from the library at that!
