I realize this is November lol...but I'm joining in. I'm pretty sure it's never too late to start. I've been doing this on and off for 11 months so I'm well and truly ready for it to be over. I sold a kids outdoor setting which was collected today so that's one more thing gone. The garage sale is tomorrow and I'm either dropping off to the Salvos or booking a hard rubbish pick up for anything that is left. None of it is coming back inside the house.

I've gotten rid of 1/2 of an old dining room set we had in the garage just in the way and adding to the clutter.
I've given a chair at a time to one of my co-workers, and this weekend we are taking her table. She's a single mom and has never had a dining room set, so I'm excited to give it to her for her Thanksgiving. <3
I'm calling Waste Management this morning to get one of my two free allotted bulky item pick ups for next week.
Last year I'd forgotten about that perk and I WASTED my two pick ups. And look, the year is almost over and I'd almost missed it again! Thank goodness for this thread to prompt me to get that done. (between this and the housecleaning thread I'm on a roll again!)

I've already made two trips to Goodwill. I've got a bag being filled again, this time it has an old Olympus camera from the 90's, and an old <edited> DooneyB! bag, the 90's style one that I wore with my suits. IDK, I've kept it all these years, but why? I"ll never use it again. I don't even like that ugly Duck logo on it. Next big room to tackle is my scrapbook room. Dreading it. O M G. I went back through this thread and found my post from January. Now, when I'd posted that I needed to tackle the scrapbook room, this was because I'd had it on my to do list for all of 2015 and had never gotten to it. And as the year went by it got worse and worse. I'm SOO happy this finally got done last weekend. Wow. I'm just feeling so relieved that it doesn't have to go on 2017's list of things to do that I am dreading! Wahhoo!

My garage sale is done! We sold a good portion of the stuff we put out, including a heap of things we thought wouldn't move. My SO is calling the Salvos on Monday to organise a pick up and then I'll book a hard rubbish pick up for anything that is left.

I feel like I finally made real progress.
I sold tons of little boy clothes on eBay. Selling in lots is the way to go, apparently.
I went through my clothes again, tossed anything that didn't flatter me, didn't fit, just made me sad to wear it.
Helped older kids clean their room. four trash bags full of old school papers, empty packaging, etc later, and it's looking much better.
This was a good year. I feel like I did get rid of a large portion of my clutter. But even more important, I incorporated systems to help manage what comes into the house.

I have two bags of books ready to go to the library for donation. Hoping they will take movies too. Plus, I have a stack of books started to pass on to my sister.
Also, I need to get rid of some computer components. Who takes those?
There's just so much that needs to go. Next up is cleaning out the hall closet to rid ourselves of coats and shoes we no longer wear.

Great idea to sum up how we each did with our Great Purge of 2016! While I made progress, there is still much to do. That will be taken care of during our next phase of remodeling, due to begin sometime in January. We got rid of several items of large furniture, clothes, books and more. Bags and bags of recycling, as well as trash. I also started listing things on eBay and have gradually been getting rid of all that I've stocked up for that. The main thing I accomplished was getting back into the habit of keeping a bag/box in the guest room and added to it almost daily. As soon as I put my hands on something and thought "I don't need/want this anymore", straight into the donations box it went. I learned that it is best to work at it as I go along, rather than trying to block out a big chunk of time to wade through it. Even if you subscribe to the "do it all at once" theory, I've realized that if you don't master the act of clearing out as you go, it is going to be back to the original state in short order! Would love to see us do another year long thread in 2017! It's great motivation. Is anyone else interested? Save

I have taken 3 loads of items to our local Hope Hospice thrift store. Mostly Christmas items and some clothing. I plan to take at least one more load before Christmas.
The thing I'm most excited about is happening next Monday. I have 4 close friends who I've been celebrating birthdays with for about 25 years. They are coming over for dessert and I told them I have a game to play. Since I'm trying to downsize our Christmas decorations I am playing a version of the steal game. I have 8 items and will let each of them end up with 2. They all have a daughter who will get one of the items. Some of the items are are a Fitz and Floyd platter, a vintage Jingle Bear and a Spode 2-tier dessert holder.

I donated more than 100 kids books, some clothes, toys and puzzles top a local house for foster type kids. Did more purging of my bathrooms of old makeup and meds, my kitchen of old spices and expired food, and my kids closets of ripped stained or simply too small clothes.
I hope I've reached my goal of 2016 items purged, but it's hard to say since I've been rather sporadic in my purging. I think I will take more effort to keep track of my 2017 items next year.

Also, I need to get rid of some computer components. Who takes those? Our dump takes them but there's a disposal fee. The local computer store takes them also - and will physically destroy the harddrives if you request (DH is handy enough to be able to do so himself) and they don't charge so that's where I take them. Would love to see us do another year long thread in 2017! It's great motivation. Is anyone else interested? Yes please - I've been decluttering all year long (really for the past 5 or so years) but I don't feel like it's making much of a dent. I'm really not sure why because I rarely buy anything that's not consumable (food, toiletries, adhesive...) but DH loves yard sales and the flea market and shopping...and my mum tends to overbuy for gifts... Regardless - there is a LOT more that needs to leave!

I purged the drawers and cabinets in the master bathroom. Emptied out everything the Kon Mari way, ended up with one full trash bag of stuff that we never use or have stopped using. There is actually room in the medicine cabinet now! Next on my list is the clothing. And yes, I will be emptying out all the closets and drawers and going through it that way. I don't know how long it will take, but I am gearing myself up for the chore.

Just checking in to see if everyone who has participated in the Great Purge of 2016 is happy with the progress they made? Did anyone complete their purge, or like me still have a ways to go? I had a good start to the year, then my mother passed away and dealing with her things really set me back. It looks like I will need another year of purging to meet my goals. Which leads me to my question...is anyone here interested in another year long thread where we post about our goals and accomplishments for decluttering and purging? I found it helpful, as well as motivating whenever someone would post about their success. LavenderLayoutLady has accomplished what she needed to and is open to someone else doing a similar thread in 2017. Unless there is someone else wanting to take over, I'm happy to start the thread on Jan. 1. I just want to make sure that there is actually some interest because I'm afraid I'd get my feelings hurt if I did the thread and no one posted!

We will be getting our house ready to put on the market so I will be a purging maniac! Within the last few weeks I have taken at least 10 box-loads of items to our local thrift store plus donated several coats and jackets for the homeless. For those wanting to get rid of old TVs, computers, monitors and other electronics, Best Buy will take them for no charge! Check with your local store to make sure they are part of this great service.

I did not too badly this year, but still have a way to go.
Wins -Main floor decluttering (something in every room, including front hall closet!) -Scrap room (yay!) -DS's bedroom -Garage tidy. Not complete, but progress -Toy and kids clothes clean out. Lots donated, still have a big garage sale box.
Not so great -Basement - almost nothing done down there except the rec room well cleaned and organized.
I'm going to go ahead and say that 2017 will be the year we get our basement organized. Storage room, DH's office, and rec room again. DH is the barrier, but I'm chipping away at him. Bring on the new thread!

Early 2017 is my great purge - I doubt I'll need a thread, though, as I am ordering a skip and getting ALL of the crap out of my house in one go......I am so excited about that!! Well, that's a surefire way to get it accomplished! We are starting phase 2 of our house remodel in January so that is going to be my big push. I have to totally empty the master bedroom & closets, master bathroom, as well as the guest bedroom & closets. It all has to go into the dining room during the construction phase. The dining room that is piled high with boxes and boxes of stuff from mom (as well as my own stuff) to be gone through. Guess how I'm spending New Year's? I sometimes think the big push is the easier way to get it done though. Kind of like ripping the bandaid off quickly! Save

I don't post often but I definitely will participate in a 2017 purge thread. I found this thread so motivating!
I'm fairly happy with the amount I purged in 2016. I still have a few hot spots to tackle, and purging worn out clothes, paper clutter and expired food/etc is a constant battle.

I just got rid of my old Jetmax Cube scrap workstation. It's been sitting unused and taking up too much space. I've been using my much better, steadier and roomier Kallax work station for months. There was no reason to have the cubes at all.

Those three are constant battles for me as well - I have friends with grandchildren and nieces and nephews so constantly feeling I want to give all the clothing to them so it ends up sitting and then isn't the right size etc - and I just literally emptied a cupboard of expired cake mixed I guess I just kept buying and not making cakes! Got rid of those! And paper omg let's just day I have a few Rubbermaid containers to go through next week !

Last day of our 2016 Purge!! I put 4 boxes of brass hinges and doorknobs on Freecycle and had tons of people wanting them. They are on our porch bench awaiting pickup. DH and I just put 3 boxes of old real estate files in the back of my Pilot to take to our office for the shred bin. It is amazing to read through them and realize someone bought a house 20 years ago when it seems more like 10 years ago. Time flies!! Can't wait until we start a new thread for the Great Purge of 2017!

Just dropped of three bags of toys, kids clothing and misc. odds and ends at goodwill. Also purged some old clothing that was replaced by new Christmas gifts. But the best was getting rid of three large ceramic/stained glass garden stepping stones that we no longer wanted. They have been in my car since before Christmas and it feels so liberating to get rid of them! Can't wait to organize, purge, and streamline in 2017!

I did not finish two rooms of the house and never even set foot in the garage to purge. I will probably finish the last two rooms in the next couple of months and start on the garage when the weather gets warmer.
However, I feel that this is a forever on-going thing. I will probably go back through the rooms I have already cleared out and get rid of more stuff. I already got another round of Christmas gift items that I DO NOT NEED, uggghhhh.
This weekend I am replacing the liner and reorganizing my pantry. I don't think I did a good enough purging job when I went through it last.

I went through my clothes yesterday and threw some away and put others in the donation bin.
DD10 found a half-dozen books to put in the donation bin as well.
That's it for 2016...onward to 2017!

Over the last two weeks I have purged my kitchen cabinets and pantry, the old makeup in my bathroom and part of my bedroom. I tend towards the butterfly method of cleaning/purging. You know, I move around from room to room and never get the entire room done, just a spot in it. I figure if I get enough spots purged, I will get the whole house done! I will check in and post updates next year. My goal is to make it easier to move into a new house in about two years.
