This is a spin off of a thread posted by kellybelly77link to threadShe had a goal of getting rid of 2,015 in 2015. Although I'm probably not going to be able to reach an amount that high, I thought I'd start a thread where we could post what we purge. You can post whatever you like, whenever you like. You can list your goals. I figure this can be an ongoing thread throughout the year. I'm using it as motivation to clear my clutter. Anyone wanna join me?

I know it's not quite 2016 yet, but I had to get a jump on the clutter when I had the urge last night.
Got rid of:
-Old snow boots in terrible condition (to make room for my new Land's End snow boots)
-a bunch of too small socks in my toddler's drawer that I kept pushing farther back as I bought newer socks. (Why did I not just get the old ones out in the first place, I have no idea! Maybe because they were too cute? IDK)
-Trashed overly worn socks & undies of my own. (replaced with new ones I bought yesterday)
-Broke down & put in recycling cardboard boxes from Christmas.
-trashed cheap bubble bath that I really didn't like.

Going through sheets, towels, blankets. Old ones going to the dog pound. Not buying new ones!! I have plenty.

Marking my spot too. I need to purge old towels, pillows and duvets. We have too many duvets...surely we only really need a spare double and a spare single so need to find a good home for the other half dozen we seem to have acquired!!

In 2015 I did my upstairs closets (13 huge bags gone, mostly linens), DS's room (another 6 or 7 bags), and some of my clothes. I also opened boxes I hadn't opened since we moved into this house (6 years ago) and got rid of a lot of that just taking up space.
This year we are tackling our basement. I started with DS's toy area in December. Tons of broken toys, games missing pieces, stuff like that. We cleared the space completely. He's 10 now and needs much less in the toy area. He's left with a few keepsakes, a few current toys and his video games.
Next we're doing the storage area.
I will organize all my holiday stuff as I take down the Christmas tree. DH is committed to clearing out the old computer stuff (he's a computer guy with a million assorted computers and components in the storage area taking up the prime space). I'll also ditch all the cardboard boxes / old kitchen stuff / old office supplies / etc that I've been saving "in case we need them".
I'm craving a big purge. Looking at photos of when we first moved into this house, every room looks so big and light and airy. Now I feel buried by clutter in every room.

Great idea!
I'm cleaning out any Christmas decorations I haven't been using before I pack things away.
Taking everything out of panty. Consolidating half-used things, sorting, rearranging.

Counting the things I get rid of? If I had that much time on my hands, then I would be better organized!!!

When I took all the ornaments off the tree this year, I sent aside a bag of them to sell on ebay. I also put one to the side to give to my mom.
Cleaned out the linen closet and have a small pile of sheets to take to the Humane Society. I also threw away two mattress protectors that were in terrible shape. Added a handmade quilt to my ebay pile.
I am on the fence about a sweater I ordered from Lands' End. I like the fit and feel, but the color is odd. I finally decided it would be better to return it than to keep an item that I don't love.

So far I have thrown out a lamp that hasn't worked for years and kept telling myself one day I would get fixed and never did. Also got rid of an end table, a small shelf, some frames and mirrors that I had in my wall and had always hated, a couple of old towels that I had. I also got rid of 3 trash bags of scrapping stuff. It's a start and so much more has to go.

I haven't started yet, but as I'll be moving house in a few weeks, and getting to leave all my junk in my current one (DH wants to keep on this house for when he comes up to visit the kids), purging is less urgent than making sure that I only take what is either useful or beautiful to the new house! And that was a very long sentence...

I'm craving a big purge. Looking at photos of when we first moved into this house, every room looks so big and light and airy. Now I feel buried by clutter in every room. This is exactly how I felt! We had so much room and so many closets and cupboards galore! And now they are filled with junk! When I realized we had two junk drawers filled with crap we never use I decided last year to do the 2,015 items in 2015. It really is remarkable how much stuff we have. We did 2,015 items with no problem. So I think we are going for 2,016 in 2016! I count everything, so the pile of magazines that we donated wasn't one thing, it was 60 things. I inspired my sister to do this also. She thought it would be impossible but once she started counting each piece of baby clothes jammed inside dresser drawers hers added up fast also! OP- I am glad I could inspire folks to take the leap and get rid of stuff! It really does feel good. Not only to have made our goal but to claim back some much needed space. I'll be back around as we are doing another round. In fact, I have to meet a lady today as she bought some of the Cricut cartridges that I listed for sale!!! I almost wanted her to wait a few days until Jan so that I could count them towards my new goal!

There is something about going into a new year that makes me want to get rid of things and get organized. This past year dd and I spent a lot of time clearing out her room. This next year I want purge dh's closet of clothes he doesn't wear anymore. He has button down shirts that he's been given over the years that he doesn't wear because it isn't the style he likes. I plan to hold on to a few just in case and donate the rest. I've also decided I'm sick and tired of my living room being decorate with dh's computer crap. Time to take a hard line with that.

Yesterday I went through the 3 - yes, 3! - junk drawers in my kitchen. I threw out owners manuals to small appliances we know longer have. Tons of packets of condiments from fast food places we no longer frequent because we're trying to eat healthier but I kept because hey, we might go on a picnic one day and these are easier to transport than bottles of ketchup. Cookie cutters I haven't used in a decade and will never use. And plenty of other junk. It was so freeing!

I just purged my three full shelves of childrens books. I only kept the favorites of my kids and grandkids. I donated some and I'm taking some to Half Price Books to sell. I still need to go through my own book shelves.
DH and I donated some furniture we had stored in the basement. Mostly I needed help to get it out to the garage, so I rounded up one of my brothers while our son was here to be the muscle.
I cleaned out two junk drawers and have none now. I threw away all my old, crappy plastic food storage containers and replaced with nice Lock & Lock glass containers.
I purged my paperwork files and filled up three bags with recycling and shredding.
I am learning not to keep certain things. I read somewhere, regarding paper, what's the worst that can happen if I get rid of it? Can I find the info online? So, this Christmas I got a small crockpot and I THREW AWAY the manual! Seriously, the crockpot cost $15. Do I really need the manual or warranty?
I'm on a mission again in 2016 to purge.

I listed on the other thread my goal is to get rid of 365 things. I am going to do that by filling a bag each month with at least 30 or 31 items and then take that bag to a thrift store or put it out for those donation trucks that come around. The first one is coming Jan 5th and I will have a bag ready.
I am going to toss things that cannot be donated like old raggedy clothes.
I am going to keep the bag right near my front door and every time I see something I don't want I am going to put it right in the bag. I already have several Christmas items in the bag and some gifts I received that I am not even going to put away.
At the end of the year I hope I can actually tell that things are gone, because right now I could get rid of quite a bit and it would not be noticed.
I do routinely give up things that people admire. I had a tall pewter lamp that I had no shade for and no place to put it so I gave it to my cousin who loved it. Yes, it was my grandmother's but now it's gone. Yay!
One of my biggest obstacles is hanging onto things for my kids and then the don't need or want them. I could furnish a home for each of them, but they seem to make do on their own.

I cleaned out two junk drawers and have none now. I threw away all my old, crappy plastic food storage containers and replaced with nice Lock & Lock glass containers. Are these the ones you bought? Or something similar? That is one thing I told dh I needed to do! We have so many different types and I have them organized in their own drawer but the kids put dishes away and they are usually a disaster! Then I get irritated and organize them again. So I told dh I should get rid of all of them since they are cheapo plastic ones and buy one style so they are easier to put away.

NYEve - one 13-gallon bag of hair bows and string backpacks and tote bags and assorted other stuff from oDD's room. She's moving rooms and de-cluttering as she goes. Also one paperback HP book (replaced with a hardcover) and a cat condo that none of the cats have touched.

I'll join in. I sorted through my Christmas wrapping supplies last night and tossed out some older wrapping paper that I knew I wouldn't use. I sorted all the rest and guess what? I don't need to buy wrapping paper or tags next Christmas! I have plenty. I always get seduced by the pretty new styles every year and buy new, but I have several old rolls that haven't even been used. I am determined to use those next year.
I also cleaned some in my craft room closet. Finally threw out the jumbo container of crayons and markers from when DS was younger. I'm also taking some of my DH's things down to his area. Everyone likes to store things in my room because it's more convenient, but I'm claiming back my space.

I purged DS's room yesterday.
2 bags to the garbage (old packaging, pencils with no erasers, DVD cases with no movie inside) 1 car load to Goodwill - computer chair, games and books from when he was a young, magic set he never uses, clothes that don't fit
I also took about 15 old purses, a few pairs of DH's shoes and clothes that are outdated.
It's a good start but I'm far from done....

Marking my spot as well. Won't have time to start the purge until next week when DH goes back to work though. I find my most successful purging occurs while he is away! Otherwise, he tries to "save" everything for some reason or another...even stuff that isn't his!

I have lots to do, just need motivation to start. Had great intentions over the Christmas break, but have had ds and gf here since the 23rd, he had a tonsil abscess which finally got treated yesterday, and I've been busy running to DRs offices and caring for him. Not the quiet Christmas vacation that Dh and I had planned, but he is on the mend now.
I did purge my big storage box of Christmas wrapping supplies last week, made more room and threw out stuff I've been hanging on to but never use. Just bought one 4-pack of foil wrap at WM for 50% off, and that's all I needed.
May get busy tomorrow with bedroom closet and bureau drawers.

Unlike you all, I haven't been purging this week. dd brought me a huge box of her scrapbook supplies and it took me 3 days to put it away. Fortunately, I have room for it. But not much more. I will probably use a lot of it.
I have been working on it this year, but I still have a couple of junk drawers. They are organized and neat, however! Dh started a new workout routine and he no longer fits his shirts. His neck has advanced a size. He needs to clean out his closet to make room for a larger size. I told him this morning. We'll see if he does it.
Going to get rid of some Christmas decor when I take it down, too. And some old ratty clothes. Since I retired, I am finding myself dressing in really old, ugly clothes if I plan to be home all day and I need to remove that temptation...I have plenty of nicer clothes.

I really really want to declutter and organize this year...of course, I say that every year *sigh*
I'm gonna make a concerted effort though. We want to move this coming year, and I so don't want to take most of this crap with us.
