In August I had to put my beloved pug, Bogart, to sleep. He was 13. I miss him. When I bought this house, the girl and I started discussing a dog. I wanted more like a pug....she wanted a Great Dane :-P. Luckily we had to postpone till this month so we had time to research all options...breed, age, adopting vs purchase from breeder or store. We have always Adopted but I find more the adoption process is harder, not very informative about the animal/flat out lied too etc. anyway we had an interesting time looking into it all. Our lives are very different now so our dog options are different. i had been kinda stalking the animal control shelter here, as well as the humane society etc. yesterday I found a dog that seemed to fit what we were looking for, however, they were not open till today. So this morning we showed up bright and early :-) he is perfect for us. Perfect size, perfect temperament, etc. granted we have only had him a few hours, but it feels right. He will need a little training but so far so good. Yay!!!! We are pretty excited and have enjoyed getting to know him. He is thought to be 5 years old a dis a brown and white boxer, but on the small side for a boxer. now for the sad. This is my first adoption that has been obviously abused and he will bear the scars forever. It appears he may have been used as a bait dog. The shelter said they think he wAs mauled around a year old but they do not know if it was a onetime thing or multiple times. He has huge black scars on his body, his feet are missing skin and different kinds of scaring, his left ear is mostly gone, and looks like it had been chewed off. The biggest scar is on his neck and the cone of shame from his neuter surgery has rubbed it raw. He startles at loud noises and raised voices, but hissy cats dont seem to phase him lol. My heart broke when we met him and they told us his story. Honestly how he looks ontheoutside is exactly how I feel on the inside. How could I not love him??? he is a huge cuddle bug. When you pet him he leans into you. The more you pet, the more he leans He follows us everywhere. We took him to the pet store with us and he charmed all the ladies there. They were helping us find toys etc for him, which he loves. It was hard playing tug with him. He would play but had as scared look in his eyes like he wasn't sure it was okay. I keep assuring him it is and periodically he will bring me a toy to throw or tug. I am on my iPad and haven't figured out the photo thing from here yet. I'm working on it I promise :-). I took photos of the scars and open wounds for comparison in a few months. I won't post them here because I know it will upset a few...believe me it upsets me too. Oh and his name is Rocky :-)

Oh my gosh, he is beautiful! Thank you so much for giving this sweet dog a home. A chance to be loved as he truly should be.
I understand your feelings. The happiness of finding a pet to fill your heart, and then the sadness of learning what his life used to be like and the scars that he still bears. I believe in some way you and your family were meant to have this dog. I can tell by what you've written how much you love him already and how loving your home will be. He will finally experience what trust feels like. What loving arms wrapped around him feels like. And he will pay that back a hundredfold over the years.
Thanks so much for posting and sharing the photos, and especially for adopting him.

He's beautiful! The photo of him holding his toy - so sweet! You are some special for loving him despite his scars. Grateful animals make the most loyal friends. They know what they've been saved from. Bless you!

He would play but had as scared look in his eyes like he wasn't sure it was okay. I keep assuring him it is and periodically he will bring me a toy to throw or tug. We adopted from the humane Society, too. Rorie is a black lab mix that was picked up as a stray, so nothing was known about her history. She was picked up outside one of the hospitals. It was apparent that she had been abused or at least mistreated. Though she was over a year old (they could tell because of her teeth - just not how much over a year), she literally did not know what food was. The only thing she would eat was her own poop.
We have had Rorie for 8.5 years now. She leans in for the petting like Rocky does. Whenever she met new people, her assumption was that they were going to hurt her. It took 5+ years for her to get over that. Now she greets strangers eagerly. It may take a long time, but Rocky may overcome the emotional damage as well.

Aaaawww, he has the sweetest face! He is lucky to have you.
A friend of mine and her brother had a German Shepherd (coincidently also called Rocky). She had been abused by her previous owner, who we assumed was a man, because for the rest of her life she wouldn’t go near any man, except my friend’s brother.

I adopted a boxer from the shelter here a bunch of years ago, he too had been badly abused. he was skin stretched over skin and had cigarette burns on him .. Id holler to the kids to come eat, or hurry up for school and he'd hit the floor thinking I was yelling at him. He'd gobble his food so fast he'd throw it back up, so I'd sit in the floor with him, with the bowl of food and hand feed him one.piece.at.a.time. so he wasn't getting it too fast. He became my love, my baby. and I honestly think he would have ripped someone up had they grabbed me, he was my velcro dog whenever anyone else was around, any company etc. unfortunately while he had plenty of reasons to hate people, he didnt know a stranger and loved car rides.. things which made it easy for someone to steal him .sigh. to this day I miss my Bruno he was my heart dog. Your Rocky is beautiful I want to one day own another, but not until I have a fence.a good fence. they get stolen all the time around here.

What a lovely boy - such a sweet, expressive face! We adopted a 5 year old abused dog... we had her for 14 years!! It took her a little while to adjust to her new life and trust us, but once she did she was completely devoted to us ?
