On the old board, a bunch of peas were making fabric bags, and a bunch posted pictures of them. I want to dig out my sewing machine, and want to start off trying something relatively easy, and I'd love to make a purse/bag.
if you still have pics to share, and a link to the pattern, I would be grateful. I think it was a free pattern.

I remember that thread. The bags were awesome! I think they were called "my favorite bag" or something like that! This is what I was thinking of:

My Favorite Bag is the thread I was thinking of too. The Pattern is not free. It can be a pretty price-y bag to make even when using coupons.

I've made that bag a couple times!! It's pretty large and takes a lot of fabric and time, but it always gets compliments.

What perfect timing! I'm also in the market for a 'perfect bag' pattern. Mine needs to have space/padding for DSLR camera, places for sunglasses, keys, water bottle, be a crossbody or not w/soft comfy shoulder pads.
Marking my spot! And off to check the options listed

Thanks, I knew you guys would come thorough....I'm kinda sad to hear that it's a costly bag to make though, so not likely something I will start off with. But I'm happy for the link and the reference for future use!
I've been checking out those free patterns in the link above, and might try a makeup brush roll. My brush holder is falling apart and the zipper is broken.

The grommets on the bag I made for my girlfriend four years ago won't stay on they slide right off the fabric holes and dangle on the tie. I was wondering if I could glue them on.

I was wondering if I could glue them on. You really have to close them so they click. You may have had too much thickness around the hole. Did you do the stay stitching and cut away the batting before setting the grommets? Here's my bag I made all from fabric I bought at Joann's. I think with coupons and all it was under $20 not including the battings

scrappinghappy The directions didn't say to stitch the circles so no. The grommets do click together its just that after awhile the fabric comes out from the inside of the grommets and they dangle on the tie. I'm impressed that you got everything for your bag with coupons for under $20! I have never gotten everything for that cheap. What is your secret?

I've made it a couple of times. I adapted it so I didn't need to use the grommets. That brings the price and aggravation down. I made belt loops instead to hold the sash. Still I think it cost close to $45 to make.

I made one of those bags when the thread was on the old board. I didn't put in the grommets. I didn't want the "ribbon/bow" on my bag. I used busy patterns to make my bag. I get a lot of complements on it when I use the bag.
I remember the gal who made a few of the bags, she even came up with size modifications for a medium and small bag. It might have been flanz. I would look, but I am in the process of moving and my directions are all packed in a box.

It's not a free pattern and it's not easy. It's pretty complicated for a tote, using multiple fabrics, etc.

I did on one because I think I made the holes too big. On the next one I made them smaller and had better luck! And now the one I made for myself my dd uses as a dance bag and sometimes a dolly carrying bag...

I was one of those who made that bag multiple times for gifts. I made at least ten of them in the full size and the purse size. I am very experienced, and it still took several hours of cutting, sewing and pressing to put each one together. Just fusing all the interfacing to the pieces took a lot of time!
They are not inexpensive to make either. I bought all my fabric on sale and used the 50% off coupons for the rest of the stuff (made multiple trips to the store), and I know the purse size was still around $35.00
I did hand sew around the grommet holes close enough that my stitches would be inside the grommets. I also trimmed the interfacing away from inside the grommet holes. Fleece interfacing is used, and it adds too much bulk for the grommets to stay snapped. Once I trimmed the fleece, I had no problem at all snapping them together, and they have stayed put in all the bags I made.
I do love the tote and the purse, and I will probably make them again some day. If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.
Cheryl
