We listed our home about a month ago. Everyone (realtor, handyman, etc.) thought it would sell quickly. It hasn't and we are OK with that and knew it was a holiday time, etc. We purchased our new home last month and she is leasing back for a month as she is building a home. Our showings have been above normal and good feedback about the home. The negative feedback has been about the traffic on our street and that is legit but no negative feedback on the actual home so our realtor said no worries, it will sell. We are good with that.
The home we purchased is 20 years old and needs some updating. Our realtor knew we would be doing somethings and planned on doing the cosmetic things prior to moving in such as flooring, paint, closets once she moved out 1-21-16. We never discussed (an error I can see now) how to handle if we need to go into the home after closing but prior to her 30 day lease being up. I had the thought of how would that be handled but didn't voice it. My thought was I guess do we will still go through the realtor? I assumed so. Mistake on my part. We would never have gone over or shown up.
We closed and didn't get keys to our home. We weren't alarmed by that due that she was in the home but the title person said legally it is your home and you need to have keys. We informed her our realtor was out of town for the holidays and would handle it once he got back. Not a big deal and we knew we wouldn't have any reason to get in (unless an emergency happened) at that time.
Once the holidays were over and things were underway we asked for an appt to come have our flooring people measure. Our realtor set it up, met us there and gave us our keys then and stayed for our appt. The previous owner wasn't there for the appt. She is single and also a realtor. No issue with it on either side. While we were at that appt we talked to our flooring person about our cabinets (I posted prior on here about them and what we would do with the kitchen) and he gave us some input on them. Later than night my dh and I were discussing things and decided we would move forward with pursuing having our cabinets done prior to us moving since our home hasn't sold. We had planned on living in the home and waiting a while before doing it but we both feel like we know what we want and it would be best to do now while we aren't living there for the work but close by enough to keep tabs on things and let people in, etc.
I called my realtor yesterday and said I am sorry that I wasn't able to coordinate this with my first appt (we didn't even know we were doing it at the time) when we went in but I need to have my cabinet person come meet me there and measure and also give me some insight on design. I told him since cabinets are being made we need to do that asap so that when we are in our home the work can begin and the kitchen has to be torn out first prior to doing floors or painting. He said OK let me call her how much time will you need? I said no more than an hour but it could be an hour. He called back and said she said no not this week to until we are in which is 8 days after that. I said, I can't do that. I apologized again that I knew it was an interruption to her time however we need to be able to come in for the appt. There wasn't another time she was open to but didn't want it to happen during her time there. I told him I am not asking her to leave if that helps her. He said no that isn't it she wants you to wait. He called her back and called me and said, OK I got you in. You can go over at that time but 15-20 minutes and get done what you need to. I said, is she going to be upset when we aren't out in 15-20 minutes because that isn't the time we discussed and he said, I don't know but I got you in so....I said thank you and goodbye. I was done.
So now I feel like the day is set up for challenge. It isn't going to take 15 minutes. I know that. I am done dealing with him but we are under contract with him so I don't have a choice right now. Obviously this should have been discussed prior as to what we would do if we needed to meet a worker there for them to see it and measure. I have no idea if she will be there and I should say anything to her upon our arrival about being sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for allowing us to come or speak to my realtor or his managing broker? I can just blow it off and do the appt and deal with his or her reaction when it takes longer than this made up time he created. I have no idea if he told her that time or just threw it out to me hoping we would rush through.
