Has anyone done it and had to involve the police? We noticed a bunch of charges my son did not make on his Xbox account, and I've done a live chat with Microsoft and they are telling me to file a police report?

How were the charges made? If your credit card was compromised, you need to take it up with your card issuer, not Microsoft. If the charges were made some other way, like hacking into your home network or something, then yes, it's a police issue.

Ouch. I've never had to dispute anything, but we also don't have a cc linked to the xbox. They have to buy an xbox giftcard and add money to their accounts that way. Same with itunes.

Yup, you'll probably have to file a police report. There are a lot of situations like this (not just Microsoft) where parents want refunds because they didn't authorize the charges, though they had a card tied to their kids' accounts and the kids made the purchases. Some companies want a police report because parents are less likely to lie to the police than a merchant. If someone is willing to file a police report, the company assume they are being truthful. [br ETA: File a dispute with your card issuer before going to the police, but they may require a police report as well.

Makes sense. My son was almost in tears swearing he didn't do it , other than the few I saw on there that he asked about first..

Those are unauthorized charges that were made to your credit card. You would take that up with your credit card company, and then delete or cancel that xBox account.

Oh no, please NEVER use debit cards for things like that! When fraud happens - and things like Xbox are notorious for fraud - your actual money is gone temporarily and can cause real problems while it's being investigated. With a regular credit card, you aren't out any money while the charges are investigated.

I'm sorry you and your son were hit by this kind of thing.
We used a PayPal account on our son's Xbox. Something you might be able to do going forward?

Well when u don't use credit cards it's the only other card we have I'd get a prepaid debit for the Xbox. Great Idea! When my parents got their Ipad, I bought them an Itunes gift card to to use as their "credit card". They don't buy anything so we haven't had to re-fill it yet. And, I have a friend who only uses an Amazon gift card for her Kindle book purchases. When it runs out, she buys another gift card and loads it on her account.

That's what we do, too. I don't use my credit card on Xbox or Itunes, and most Amazon purchases are with a gift card, too.

In the fall I had Microsoft send an email concerning my daughter's account. I wasn't renewing her xbox gold live yet because I was waiting on a good deal. The email said they were sorry she hadn't renewed and that her gold had expired. To my surprise, my daughter's account looked like it still had Gold membership. Now I had the credit card attached to her account years ago for the free month you get when you first get an Xbox. It needed a CC number to proceed. I decided that I didn't want the credit card on either of our accounts since they had a security breach at one point. I took it off of mine and it would not let me take it off of hers! Fall of 2014 we got a new expiry date for the card so I though well it can't charge anything right? And left if alone.
Fall 2015 is when this happened. I checked my Credit Card info on line and the day I got the email that she no longer had Gold Live, Microsoft tried to charge the full price and with it being converted into Canadian dollars, made it even higher than their regular price. Sigh. It of course couldn't go through. Well Microsoft had tried yet again to charge and I had a pending charge. So I called. They guy was very helpful. I explained everything. I had turned off the auto renewal feature years ago and somehow it got turned back on! I brought up the emails also that stated her account was no longer Gold and now Silver even though the Xbox showed Gold. He saw in her account that the year before I had used a card I bought elsewhere to pay for her membership to verify my story. He looked into my account and saw that the credit card info was off my account and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come off of hers. Called his boss to get the okay to straighten everything out. He was able to stop the renewal and had a hard time getting the credit card off but was finally able to do so. Whew. I usually get the Gold off of Amazon for way cheaper. Though the sales have crap lately and I still haven't got her Gold. The only thing that has messed her up was that she was saving Lego Batman 3 games in the cloud which apparently you have to have Gold for. She usually races against online friends with her Sonic racers. She's more annoyed at the Batman 3 now because either she has to wait it out or start over. She's currently waiting it out.

I had this trouble years ago, used credit card to buy membership. Ds was probably early teen and didn't realize he was purchasing things...luckily they sent an email about the purchases and I caught it. Was a project to get microsoft to take my credit card off the account. Think we may have had to cancel entirely. Either way, they did reverse most if not all the charges and we learned the lesson to only use prepaid cards.

With a regular credit card, you aren't out any money while the charges are investigated. This isn't necessarily true. We use Bank of America and have had our debit card hacked 2 or 3 times. The money was immediately replaced. But it could be because it was originally an account from a bank that was bought out by another company and then by BOA. I know we still have some of the original benefits.
