Not sure where I have been all my life, but it have just discovered I sorta enjoy oatmeal.
Dh had some unflavored Quaker oats packs. I would like to get some oats without all the added junk.
Questions...
1. Any brand suggestions for steel cut oats? I would like to try them. What's the difference?
2. What add ins do you like in your oats? Right now I have just been eating them plain, but I think they would be a great food to fancy up.
Thanks.

I use Quaker old fashioned oats, so much better than the flavor packs. It takes about 7 minutes to prepare. For add ins, I use cinnamon, pure maple syrup, apples, dried cranberries and chopped nuts. You can really use any type of fruit, but cranberries and apples are what my kids like best. Quaker does make steel cut oats, but I haven't tried them, I've heard they are more chewy. I was kind of like you, I'm 53 and thought I hated oatmeal. I never even made if for the kids. But that was the instant stuff. We all are big fans now

The other day, one of our new kittens thought her mouse toy would be a good add in for my oatmeal. I did not agree.

DB just introduced me to the little cups of steelcut oatmeal that Costco carries. It's nutty tasting and so good! I'm going to be looking for them later today. They're packed in a red and white box in the cereal section. They come with dried cranberries and nuts. I like to sweeten oatmeal with agave. I also like to add fresh blueberries when I have them.

For sweet, I loved pure maple syrup. Honey works, but maple syrup is better.
I don't do sweets anymore, so now I do either butter and cinnamon or sugar-less peanut butter.
Some people I know add cocoa powder and sweetener, but I didn't really like that for breakfast.

Steel cut oats are chewier. I really like them but they take so long to cook that I tend to eat more rolled oats. I do keep some of the Trader Joe's frozen steel cut oats in the freezer at work for days when I don't have time to eat at home - they're quick and really good. I want to try to duplicate these at home.
My favorite oatmeal additions are natural peanut butter and diced apples. I just had this for breakfast! I added a tablespoon of chia seeds also.
As far as brands, I usually buy Bob's Red Mill steel cut oats and Quaker or Wegmans old fashioned oats.

I use the Wegmans old-fashioned oats. For one serving it takes 4 1/2 minutes in the microwave. I add in some raw honey for sweetener.
I have never tried overnight oats but I have seen several recipes where people mix up oatmeal with milk and other various ingredients and refrigerate overnight.

I just switched from Quaker Old Fashioned to steel cut, I have to say I am loving the change. I can't eat for an hour after I get up so I heat my steel cut in the micro with raisins, cinnamon and walnuts. Then I pop them into a small thermos with some maple syrup and take them to work. By the time I get there, they are still piping hot and have finished cooking. I am going to have to try the pumpkin puree or applesauce for a change. I think I will pick up either some chia seeds or flax to toss in as well. The more the merrier!

I eat steelcut oatmeal almost every morning for breakfast. I buy a bag of the Bob's Red Mill brand in the health food section of my grocery store. They do take a while to cook, so I usually have them simmering on the stove while I'm getting ready in the morning. I add some brown sugar and cinnamon to them. There are a lot of things you can add to it - chopped up apple, a spoonful of canned pumpkin, any cut up fruit makes it taste better. I have to watch my cholesterol, so after they're done cooking I mix in some ground flax seed too. I like the texture of them better than rolled oats.

Last summer when I was home, I made the steel cut oatmeals every morning. When I had to return to work, I didn't have the time. I found this make ahead oatmeal recipe and have made it several times this winter. Usually on Sunday I will make a batch of 1 1/3 cups of steel cut oats and 4 cups of water. I just put it all in a large container and keep it in the fridge. Every morning i scoop what i want. My favorite way is a little brown sugar, chopped almonds and blueberries (along with a little milk). When I get to work i heat it up and my breakfast is done I just buy the steel cut oats from Sprouts (like a Trader Joe's). they have it in a barrel.

My mom adds oatmeal to hers. I usually do fruit and nuts, like raisins and pecans, but I've used dried cherries or cranberries too. There are LOTS of options for dressing up all types of oatmeal.

Peanut butter, diced prunes, cranberries, slivered almonds, I love steel cut oats, but have found that I really need more protein In the mornings, so I almost always add peanut butter. I don't care for the sweet oatmeal, but will occasionally add a teensy bit of brown sugar.
Steel cut oats are the best!

I eat oatmeal almost everyday. I buy Trader Joes old-fashion oats. They're big and fat and have a toasted nutty taste. I really don't like steel cut, they seem too...I don't know, too smooth?
I add a handful of the Fruit & Nut mix from Costco. It has almonds, walnuts, pistachios, dried cherries, cranberries. I don't add any sweetener, just the dried fruit. Sometimes I go plain. And sometimes I add flax or chia or fresh blueberries.
I used to be a HUGE lover of Quaker Apples and Cinnamon. But now I can't stand them.

My favorite hot 'oatmeal' cereal is Hodgeson Mill multigrain with flax and quinoa made with coconut milk instead of water. I like cinnamon on it or I'll dice dried pineapple or fresh apples and cinnamon.
For plain oats I like Bobs red mill Scottish oats.

I'm a big oat eater. I use a local co-op store brand old fashioned and PC Steel Cut oats.
You can make Old fashioned oats the night before, add toppings, chia or flax and liquid and mix well. Eat them straight from the bowl cold or put them in the microwave for a minute. I usually end up adding a bit more almond milk in the morning to get the consistency I like.
Steel Cut oats you can make a batch at night (serves 4). I store mine in a container in the fridge and once cooled, cut off a serving everyday, add toppings and almond milk. Warm in the microwave. It lasts four days.
Favourite toppings-
-natural peanut butter and strawberries -natural peanut butter, raw honey and banana -banana, maple syrup and walnuts -natural peanut butter and raw honey -blueberries and vanilla greek yogurt -natural peanut butter and cocoa -unsweetened apple sauce and cinnamon -cooked pear, blueberries and ginger -blueberries, cinnamon and coconut
The possibilities are endless.

I'm eating Oat Fit right now. They have Steel Cut, which I mix in with a pack of Cinnamon Roll. In comparing labels, they seem the most nutritious.
A pack of Cinnamon Roll has 100 calories, 2g of Fat, 0g sugar and 3 g Protein.

I usually have regular large flake Oatmeal, and I like to add a bit of Pumpkin Pie spice to it along with a little bit of brown sugar and some vanilla for flavour. Lately though Ive been on a cream of wheat kick, I haven't had it since I was a kid.
Oh, and I just remembered, for both the Oatmeal and the cream of wheat I make them with 1/2 water and 1/2 milk to make them a bit creamier. Not as healthy I'm sure.

Trader Joe's has a tasty, frozen steel cut oatmeal. It comes in a 2 pack for $1.69 (I think). I usually just doctor it up with a touch of honey (Not needed), cinnamon and blue or blackberries (Or, both!)

Don't cringe until you try it, but my girlfriend convinced me to add a soft sunny side up egg into my oatmeal with a little pecorino Romano. Sometimes I just use the pecorino Romano and skip the egg. I usually use the Quaker quick cook. I can't do oatmeal that's too sweet any more. Sometimes blueberries and nuts too.

DH has eaten oatmeal every morning for YEARS. He uses Quaker quick-cook oats, which he can microwave in just a few minutes. He makes it with 1% milk (instead of water) and when it's done adds a little maple syrup and blueberries. He swears by it.

I love oatmeal, but never really added anything to it besides milk. All these ideas sound sooo good that I must try them. Thanks for sharing !
One question: do you use chia and flax seed together or one or the other? Which is better for you?

I make refrigerator mocha oats. Just oatmeal, Greek yogurt, bit of honey and cocoa powder and instant espresso. I am allergic to tree nuts and any non citrus fruit but if I wasn't I would be all over apples and peanut butter oats. When I mAke refrigerator oats I can't get pb to blend well, but I might try the powdered pb this week and see how that goes.

What are you all using as the liquid - water or a milk product?? The Trader Joe's kind doesn't need a liquid, but sometimes I put milk in it.

We use old fashioned oats. We didn't see that much difference in steel cut and old fashioned, so we have continued on the old fashioned path.
I detest the packages of instant oatmeal. The texture and taste are unappealing to me.
Others have suggested all the options we use.

One question: do you use chia and flax seed together or one or the other? Which is better for you? You can use both together, they both have different supposed benefits. Chia seeds can lower you blood pressure and since I was adding a tbs everydAy to my oats I was getting faint and light headed, so be aware of your bp runs low.
