I got my HS son a mushroom kit from ThinkGeek for Christmas that was a dud, so I snapped up another type of kit at Wegmans last Monday. Here are our Oyster Mushrooms - just one week out and we are just a few days from harvesting. This thing is the coolest! They change size from hour to hour. We will get another 1 or two flushes of growth from our little $9.99 kit! My boys are fascinated and I'm pretty intrigued too. Yesterday's pic
Just now
update - 1/21/16
We are going to harvest and sauté them this evening for dinner! I'll weigh them before we cook and eat them.

That would be fun. So they grow out of that little container without having to be planted?

I have never seen anything like this at Wegman's. In what section did you get them in? So cool!

That would be fun. So they grow out of that little container without having to be planted? No need to plant outside. Just soak the enclosed bag in water and then water several times per day. Turn the bagged brick around to grow the other side after this side is done. Mushrooms don't need typical soil - it depends on the type of mushroom as to what medium it grows in. Oyster mushrooms do perfectly in these sawdust bricks. The company - Back to the Roots - also has an aquaponic set-up that I just ordered since I like this so much. It has a small aquarium for one beta on the bottom whose waste feeds the greens you grow on top. My boys can't wait until it gets here.

(Do they taste the same as the kind at the supermarket? Better? Fresher? Worse? Same?)

(Do they taste the same as the kind at the supermarket? Better? Fresher? Worse? Same?) We haven't picked them yet - I'll let you know what the verdict is when we do.

Ooo, that is fascinating! That's a lot of growth for a day (and for the week)! I tried growing mushrooms eons ago outdoors (it was sort of complex; we inoculated logs with spores) and struck out, but this looks doable.

Yeah, I've read up on the inoculated logs, and it was too long/too much of a time commitment for us. I'm sorry it didn't work for you. Mushrooms in a couple of weeks is much more our style.

Elaine, thanks for sharing! My dh is already declaring that if I make homemade goat cheese he's proclaiming me wife of the century, so I'm pretty sure that me setting up mushroom growing at home would result with him taking me on a cruise or Europe or something. I'm really interested in the aquaponic aquarium. I've been wanting a beta and also love growing herbs for my kitchen but am rubbish at remembering to water them.

Just let me know when you need the link for chèvre culture for goat cheese.... Here is the link to the company shop for a bigger version of the mushroom farm and also the aquaponic set-up. With their email sign-up coupon, it is less than on Amazon, but you can look at the reviews there for an idea of its weaknesses: link to Back to the Roots

Dh got one from his step mom for Christmas. He got one mushroom before we went on a trip , so he asked her to watch them. She forgot to water them then threw them out so that was one expensive mushroom!

this is cool!! I thought your post was going to be something about mushrooms in your yard; we get mushrooms popping up when it's damp in our backyard for too long... I like your mushrooms much better!
(what do oyster mushrooms taste like? the only mushrooms I have much experience with are the white, button variety)

(what do oyster mushrooms taste like? the only mushrooms I have much experience with are the white, button variety) We get them in our yard too, but only in the summer - I love to look at them but would never eat trust myself to pick wild mushrooms. The whole family is having a great time since they grow before your eyes. Oyster mushrooms have a delicate buttery taste. They are best lightly sautéed with some olive oil or butter and served as a side. You could also add them to a stir fry or a soup.

thanks for the info! They do sound tasty. I don't know if any of our grocery stores would have these kits, but it would be fun to do. (and I agree about the backyard mushrooms-- I've heard waaaay too many stories-- about someone picking wild mushrooms, eating just ONE, and dying because it was poisonous and ruined their liver-- to EVER try eating a wild one.)

Morels are next to impossible to cultivate- I hate to admit that older ds and I are nerdy enough that we have bought a kindle book on cultivating mushrooms at home and are reading it together and talking about it. I love both Morels and Porcini mushrooms and neither work for home growers. Those species have weird symbiotic relationships with trees that isn't well understood.

It needs to be *perfect*. Needless to say, you don't do it in rows in a garden!
