hi There! We may be going to Savannah in May. I read a few threads here on places to go and eat. Very helpful! Now, I need some advice on where to stay. Is the Historic District the best area to stay? Or what about the cluster of hotels that are near the I-95 and the 204? What is traffic like in Savannah?
Thanks!

We stayed at a hotel (Marriott, maybe?) that had a room right on the river. It was quite a thrill to see the ships come up the river right next to your room. Every time we saw one coming, we would jump up and go to the window to watch it pass (even in the middle of the night - yeah, we're dorks like that). The hotel is right next to the main historic river area.

Definitely stay in the historic district for the most fun and best hotels. Hyatt on the river is good. Hilton Desoto is good. Marshall house is good. If you are looking for a good ghost tour, this is the one: 6thsenseworld.com/savannah-ghosts It is put on by a guy I used to ghost hunt with.

We stayed at the River Street Inn, right on the river. This was years ago, but it has more of a bed and breakfast feel than a hotel. It isn't part of a chain, which makes it unique...

It is a little more pricey to stay in the historical district but so worth it!! Once there, you can pretty much just park your car and walk everywhere. I've stayed at both the Marriott and they Hyatt - both are very nice but the Hyatt is a little more centrally located on River Street. I've never stayed at the River Street Inn, but I would like to - I've heard it is nice and it is a very good location.
My favorite places to stay are The Marshall House and The Brice.
Traffic in Savannah isn't bad - in the historic district there are several one-way roads, so be mindful of that.
Savannah is especially beautiful in May - you will have a wonderful time!!

We stayed at the River Street Inn years ago (ten, maybe?) and it was very nice. Very close to most touristy things.

We stayed at the Cotton Sail Inn, right on the water. It was beautiful. It was an old cotton mill that was renovated.
If you have time, try a walking tour with Savannah Dan. He has flyers all over, and we found him on trip advisor. The walking tour is cheap, and he meets in a park and you get a historic tour of some of the homes, the theater and a wonderful ice cream shop. So worth the tour. He really lives the part. He comes in a three piece white linen suit!

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in September in the historic district. It was only for one night. Would loved to have stayed longer. It is a lot of fun to walk around down there.

If you want to be in the midst of everything, definitely stay in the historic area - I'd recommend the Holiday Inn Express on Bay St. It's not your typical HI Express, its Very Nice. Or if you want something nicer (and a bit pricier, though) the Oglethorpe Inn & Suites is right next door to that.
Near I-95 there are a lot of cheaper motels, but you will have to drive into town. Traffic is, well, traffic. Sometimes are better than others. Parking can be a challenge, but once you park in the downtown area, you can walk everywhere.
It'll be a beautiful time of year to come - not hothot, but warm and very, very pretty.

We've stayed at the Staybridge Suites on Bay street a few times when passing through Savanna. Close enough to walk to the river front and not as expensive as some hotels.
