Has anyone had a pet on prescription pet food? One of my cats, Spellman (8 months old), has spent several days in the pet hospital for a bladder blockage and will come home on prescription food. I am curious about experiences with this type food. I'll ask the vet lots of questions, but I want to have some knowledge before I go in.
I am assuming it is more expensive. Are there better places to buy than the vet's office? They eat Blue Buffalo Kitten Formula now.
I have always free-fed cats. Should this food be measured and fed at set times?
I have 2 cats. If one is on prescription food, do you convert them all? If not, how do you keep them from eating each other's food?
What else should I ask?
Thanks for the help and info!

Are there better places to buy than the vet's office? My friend has a dog on prescription food. She is able to get it at PetsMart, I have always free-fed cats. Should this food be measured and fed at set times? Like any other prescription, it will have directions as to how often and how much to feed. I have 2 cats. If one is on prescription food, do you convert them all? If not, how do you keep them from eating each other's food? Feed them in separate rooms. Ask how long your cat will be on this. Ask if the other cat should be on this. As if there are any side effects. Ask if there are any places that you can find coupons or discounts for it.

Our cat is on prescription food because of urinary crystals causing blockages. He had two back to back blockages about 10 years ago. No problems since switching to the prescription diet. He eats canned Purina U/R at about $40ish a case (24 cans.) I forgot how much the dry costs, it's expensive. That one is a Hill Prescription diet one.
You can buy online and probably see some savings. I was googling it for the dog food last night because our dog is now on prescription due to pancreatitis....there was a good savings on her food at Chewys I think as well as a few others.
We added a 2nd cat a few years back and it's just easier to feed them the same thing. No hard to her says the vet and it keeps things simple as I don't want to risk him getting something he shouldn't.
Ours had urine checks for a year or more after his blockages and has been crystal free with the help of his diet so hopefully Spellman will be on the road to recovery soon!

We had one cat on it for awhile. It's much more expensive then other cat foods, but I think it's pretty comparable to the already good food you are feeding him. The thing our Vet told us is that we are feeding him too much dry. He needs more moist. So it was more a moist food, and then limiting his dry more. Which worked out ok, as we fed his moist in a different room over the other cat. They both got the Urinary dry for awhile. We started to wean them off it. Mixed it in with a higher grade food, and then stopped. He hasn't had any more problems in over 5 yrs. I think it's mainly because we got him off all the dry food though.

My mom's had a cat on prescription food for a good 6 or 7 years now. It's terribly expensive but it keeps him out of the vet so that's what he gets. We've yet to find it anywhere for less than our local vet. There have been a few places online that are cheaper but by the time you add shipping costs on to the 17 pound bag it becomes much more expensive.
The food is fed to all of her cats because it's just easier that way. Plus it's for urinary crystals which males are prone to and her cats are mostly male anyway. None of the other cats have ever had a problem and we've wondered if by feeding this to all of them that perhaps it's helped prevent them from having issues.

I buy my cat's food from the vet. I see the same bag at PetSmart and I was wondering if I could buy it there without an actual prescription from the vet. PetSmart sells it in larger bags than my vet does.

Thanks, everyone! The info helps a lot. These cats have only eaten dry, so I'll definitely ask about wet or a mix of the two.
