My oldest dd turned 13 today. I was thinking about how quickly she's growing up. She's currently on a no-devices ski trip with her youth group. Miss her. Anyway, I got to thinking about how she will likely start menstruating soon. At what age did your dds start? Was it related to when you started? I started very, very late at 19 and I'm thinking my girls may get a late start as well. Maybe melissa can chime in.

I started 3 months before my 12th birthday, and DD started 2 months after her 10th birthday. My mom didn't start until she was 14.

I think I started the summer between 7th and 8th grade, I turned 13 mid July...
My daughter turned 13 in November has no real signs of starting.

I started at 11 and my dd started hers at the same age. I read somewhere, maybe here, that girls usually start when they are 100 pounds. I have no clue if that's true or not.

I started at 10. Dd started a couple months ago at 11. She will be 12 in a couple of weeks. She had a big growth spurt over the summer so I thought she was going to soon.

Both my daughters started three months after their 11th birthdays. I started when I was 13, a month before my 14th birthday.

Average age remains 12 yrs 4 months.
My dd was, in fact, 1 day short of 12 year and 4 months. I was 12 yrs and 2 months when I got mine. It was November of 7th grade. I have no idea why I remember that.
Neither dd nor I weighed the magic 100 lbs at 12. I think that number has more to do with a typical weight/height/size and body fat amount by age 12. It's another generality.
On average, menarche (aka the first period) begins 2 years after definite breast buds appear.

I was 12 and my dd was also. She was, however, the only girl I have ever known who could not wait to start! Odd child.

My youngest was that way too, and still pretty much triumphantly announces its arrival to the family every month (it's been almost a year since she started). Somewhere down the line she also conned me into getting her her own jar of Nutella every time, to "help" suffer through the cramps .

I've never heard of anyone starting at 19 before.

I can't remember how old I was but one of my DDs was about 12 and it was full-on from the word go whereas my other DD was about 14/15 and it was sparse and irregular so I don't think you can really go on what it was like for Mum

I was 11. I was an early developer and tall for my age.
Dd also developed early and is very tall and I expected her to start around the same age, or even sooner. To my surprise she did not get her first period until she was 13 though.

I was 12, my oldest was almost 12, my youngest was 13. The 100 pounds thing was true for me, but not my dds, my youngest hasn't hit 100 pounds still and she is 14. All different periods too, mine were average, oldest has had terrible ones since she started, you gets has very light periods and skips some months. So weird, I didn't exercise at all at that age, but both girls were very active (one a swimmer, one a dancer) and they have had opposite experiences. My oldest is so jealous of her sisters light, easy periods!

I had just turned 11 and my dd was 11 nearly 12. I've never heard of anyone starting at 19 before. I think this is common among dancers and gymnasts. I was 13 and my DD was 13. I was not even close to 100 pounds I didn't hit that until after I graduated from high school, dd was about 100 lbs

It sucked having to deal with it that young. Miserable.

Do not go by the 100 pound rule. My DD was 12 yr 3 months and it totally shocked me because she was not even close to 100 pounds. Also, she did not have much need for a bra (still doesn't at 20 yrs old). I thought she might take after me or my sister. I was 13 years 9 months and my sister was well over 14. Among her 4 younger cousins, she was the earliest yet smallest at the time. They have all since outgrown her....

I had one period when I was 14 and then not again until I was 16. My daughter will be 14 in a few weeks and has not started. She is very tall and thin and not 100 pounds. She says she can wait! Not wishing for it at all.

I was 11 years, 6 months(ish), but I was also taller/heavier than most of my peers since elementary school. I wore a size 8 shoe by 4th grade (as an adult wear a 10) and probably 5'7" by 6th grade (5'9" as an adult).

I was 11.5, dd was just past her 13th birthday. My mum was only just 10 (in 1941!!!). I'd say we got with the size rule: my mum was taller/bigger than me, I was average & dd was short-er & very slight. In the year since she's almost caught me up in height

I was 12.5 and one of the later of my friends to get it. At that age, I was 5'7" and probably 120 or 130, so I was the largest of all of them, and had breasts and body hair for quite a while. I was glad to be the last of them.
That gives me a bit of hope for dd who is 8.5 and starting with the boob thing (sob) because I hope she doesn't start too soon. She's getting some pubic hair but I am burying my head in the sand for a bit (being half Indian, she's just pretty hairy in general so I'm going with that!). She knows all the info, but I just want to pretend for a little that she isn't getting older.
