I have always fed my dog Solid Gold brand foods. She is getting older and heavy. Looking for a good Healthy food to help her lose some weight. Does anyone have any specific suggestions of brands/types to check out? Thanks.

Try looking into Fromm brand. We just started using this, and our dog loves it.

We use Fromm Grain Free Beef for our 3 pugs. Great company and great food. We order on Chewy.com and get free delivery. When we were looking for a new food, I spent a lot of time on dogfoodadvisor. It's a great website to check food ratings.

After checking dogfoodadvisor we use Costco brand. It used to be chicken soup for the pet lover's soul but that got hard to find locally.

Another lover of Fromm here. You can check their website to find a seller near you.

We used to use Fromm but our Rough Collies have sensitive tummies so we switched to Acana, and it's actually rated higher than Fromm. They LOVE the Acana, and it doesn't mess with their tummies. We also order all foods from chewy.com. Love it!

Our pugs have sensitive tummies and they are doing well with the limited ingredient diet.
Nature's Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Diet Turkey Meal Formula Dry Dog Food
I also buy from Chewy (not affiliated) but a big fan. Once I bought the wrong food and asked if I could ship it back and they said No. Donate to a local dog shelter and we will credit your account. Great company.

My shih tzu was also on Nature Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Turkey but was still having tummy and skin issues. She is now on the Hills Science prescription Z/D formula. Just small contact allery issues.

I use Costco grain free. We also add veggies to every meal and cut back on the kibble to control weight. It worked great on our senior dog and our young dog loves it too.

We feed our dogs Flint River. It's only available from independent distributors, it's not cheap, but IMHO well worth it. None of our dogs have every had any problems with it. The only word of advice about it, because there's zero fillers, you feed a smaller quantity than other dog food www.flintriver.com/

2 of mine eat Taste of Wild Serra Mountain kibble. It has no grain in it.
We just switched Gadget over to Northwest raw frozen. they also have freeze dried. I buy the freeze dry for traveling. easier than frozen. He has problems keeping weight on him. He also has problems with yeast build up and his skin turns black and crusty and he turns into devil dog so we had to get him off the lamb and rice natural balance canned food.
He is also allergic to chicken so his food can't have any chicken in it and it is hard to chickenless dog food.

We fed our dog Solid gold too. He had a bunch of allergies, and this just worked the best for him. I wonder if Solid gold has a wt management brand? I would go with that. If we fed Wally anything with corn or grains in it, he lost all the hair around his eyes. Then of course he would go out in to the pasture and eat the horse's grain from their bin. The bugger. miss him.

A senior formulated food might be what you are looking for, but almost more important than the food is accurate measuring. If you feed a half-cup, for instance, it is so easy to make that a rounded half-cup, thereby overfeeding your dog. Those extra teaspoon/tablespoons of food don't look significant to us, but they add up -- fast. Also, the directions on your dog food could be suggesting too much food as the norm.
Because my 30 and 40 pound dogs don't eat a lot of food, I try to make mealtimes more interesting. Also, they get 1 snack per day, I never buy biscuits. Their treat is composed of a few green beans with a Tablespoon of food stuffed into a Kong Traxx and frozen. What amounts to just a couple of bites, normally, is now a 10+ minute treat. (Deduct that tablespoon of food from their daily intake).
Limit treats, but when you do, green beans make a great treat; they have a lower glycemic index than carrots. Put a couple in an ice cube and freeze, for instance, making it longer lasting and more interesting.
I did not realize the significance of an overweight dog until my current vet told me about some studies. Dogs who are slim and trim live up to 2.5 years longer and have significantly less joint and health problems than other dogs. At an ideal weight, you can easily feel -- but not see -- the ribs.
And of course the exercise component - walks are always great, and/or perhaps a dog park excursion is also helpful.

my dog gets taste of the wild too, lamb flavour because she's allergic to chicken I had Gadget on it for a while but he lost a bunch of weight and when you are 3 pounds to begin with and you lose almost half your body weight it is not good. that is why he was on lamb and rice. but the rice builds up yeast and we have to go back to grain free. But this food he has gained weight on. so far so good.

Chloe has definitely NOT lost any weight on it, the little dear could definitely stand to lose a few lbs though LOL And you're right its really hard to find chicken-less dog food. If she gets even a bit of chicken she starts chewing on her front legs non-stop because they are so itchy
