This weekend, I received new debit card in the mail (you know the whole chip thing). Anyway, I did as instructed and activated the new card and destroyed the old one. New card has entirely different # from original card and I have just mailed off a return last Friday that will get refunded to that card.
Can that refund still happen???
ETA: Thank you all! I did have an inquiry in to my bank and they answered this morning that the refund will go through. Only purchases are blocked.

Can you call/email your bank's customer service about that?
I would like to say it should be routed to your bank account even with the old number, but I can't say for sure.

nope. If the other card (old card) has been replaced you will get a gift card, store credit, etc.

It should hit some type of reject list that requires further investigation. The research area should quickly determine the correct/new account to credit. The credit may be delayed by a day or two.

Your credit card company knows when they gave you a new number and anything applied to the old card will automatically transfer to the new card.

I would think there would be a transition period. I think when my card was replaced a few of the automatic things still when through.

I had this happen when my credit card got replaced - the bank knows that the number has changed and in my case behind the scenes they knew that the refund belonged back on the new account, it took it an extra day or so, but it made it. Call the bank and ask

Your credit card company knows when they gave you a new number and anything applied to the old card will automatically transfer to the new card. Exactly that. We get new cards just about every year, and we have received refunds on the old/destroyed cards without a problem. The bank knows, and we have never had a problem.

This happened to me too, I had actually called the store to give them the new number after the old card was cancelled, but they ended up processing the refund to the old # and I still got my money back.

I used to work as a programmer for a major CC processing company. They keep records on file for your last number as well as your new number for a period of time - that way if something hits your old number and you haven't yet changed it, it will still go through. Your refund should process just fine.

I had this same issue a few months ago. I called my bank and they said it they weren't sure but it probably wouldn't go through. I contacted the place processing the return and notified them and they told me I had to wait for it to be rejected and then I would get a gift card. Frustrating but ok. Well one day I logged into my online banking and there was my refund with no problems.
