I've never considered an exclamation point to be shouting. Just a little excited bounce in your chair wiggle with exuberance. Same here, I've always thought of them as more of excitement or happiness, not shouting. Exactly that. CAPITAL LETTERS DENOTE SHOUTING!!!

Oh holy heck! That is one of my biggest pet peeves.
There's a lady on another message board that I frequent that ends every single one of her sentences with !!!!!! It drives me absolutely bonkers!!

I've tried hard to reign back in my use of them. And certainly don't use them at work (like, what is there to get excited about there?).
Excessive use in company literature would scream unprofessionalism to me.

I view exclamation points like italicizing: the more you use them, the less they stand out.

I do think exclamation ponts are greatly overused. More judicious use of them makes those few that are used have so much more impact.
My issue with them is the placement. I see far too many people using what I call the "floating exclamation mark." Like this:
I'm so excited !
Why? The space is incorrect.
Yet I see it all the time on the internet. Maybe it's a typing thing. I don't know. But it drives me batty.

In a discussion recently with a co-worker (she is an attorney) and out of the blue she asked me about the over use of the exclaimation point. She wondered if everyone is really that Happy! She was serious - and I had to compose myself before answering. I told her that I am a generally a happy person and use it alot when I want to emphasize my excitement. She just shook her head and said she was in the wrong line of work!

You know this is funny. I find myself doing this in emails to my sisters. I'll write something, and then when I go back and reread it, I noticed that every single sentence ends with an exclamation point!. LOL. My life isn't really all that exciting.
