I'm a scrapper, I collect pencils and Legos. Thinking about giving up the Legos. I will keep several kits because I can sell them in a couple of years for more than I paid for them. They take up too much space and I won't display them because of dust and possible sun damage. It's not as fun anymore when things you own start to own you.
What at hobbies or collections have you given up, and why?

I gave up scrapbooking. When it became a vicious cycle of buying product, buying storage for the product, organizing and never quite using what I bought, it was time to stop.
I've also given up my makeup collection. For the same reasons. I now have a reasonable amount of makeup I actually use.

I've done tons of different hobbies over the years. Quit most of them because I just got tired of doing them or the projects took too long and I have a short attention span when it comes to my leisure time pursuits!
handmade paper making marbling cross stitch knitting/crocheting miniatures Fimo clay sculpture quilting (still have all the stuff and still sew, just don't make quilts)

Is there a word limit to my response??? I keep saying I want to return to my scrapbooks, but the truth is I quit taking photos like I used to. I am sad about that. I still have enough supplies to open a store! I gave up sewing when my kids got older. I am pretty hard core at collecting Disney pins. I have THOUSANDS. But, I'm feeling the need to take a stand back until my kids are older. It's an expensive hobby and my kids are active in high school. So, I feel like I should be saving money more than spending it.

Holiday Barbies. My dad started my collection with the first one. I kept buying. One year I stopped. I felt like every year it was but it die. And it isn't like I display them. They sit in boxes under stairs in my basement. Except for three. Those are in a closet. So I guess I am s closet Barbie collector!!

I have a couple of Counted cross stitch kits I've kept because I would do them one day, but that isn't going to happen, can't grip the needle like I used to. I am fighting the urge to abandon paper scrapping, though I still enjoy card making so I do use a lot of my supplies.

I had to give up cross stitch because my eyes wouldn't accommodate, going from fabric to pattern. My daughter, who is a cross stitch professional , said there are lots of magnifying products that would help but it gave me headaches, so I gave her all my (tons) of stuff. I even had one sampler about 1/2 finished, she gave it to a friend and that friend finished it for me and gave it back! I recently came across a box full of projects I had finished but never got around to framing. I got one framed that I finished in 1989! I still scrapbook. In fact, I scrapbook more, now than ever! Time's awasting and I need to get up to date. Janet

I haven't given it up but am considering a drastic purge as I will never use everything I have. If you don't enjoy something I agree it's time to let it go. My MIL has finally reached this point . I am also to the point if we don't use or love something we don't want it anymore. It's way to easy to get over run by stuff. We used to have a lot of Disney stuff and 20 years ago I loved teddy Bears and Classic Pooh they no longer bring me joy and was happy to let them go. The same with a doll collection my mother gave me. I was never a fan but she died when I was 11 and kept the cabinet and dolls for more than 30 years. Words can not express how freeing it was to purge them.

I have collected all sorts of "stuff"
Pens and pencils in Japan Little Twin Stars stuff Marron Cream stuff postage stamps underwear scrapbook supplies Cherished Teddies Christmas tree ornaments rubber stamps altered art supplies Kimonos Perfume Planner supplies (current hobby)
I never collected make up. I buy just what I use and I use what I buy. I should get another mascara on hand as the one I have is about 6 weeks old and they only last me 3 months max.

I stopped collecting. I have a good-sized collection of vintage dishes, which I use, but I stopped buying new ones when I started having kids, and don't intend to re-start. I have enough for our family and for parties, and I don't have storage for more.
I'm on a yarn diet; I knit a ton, but not as fast as I buy yarn, so I'm embargoed (by me) from buying more until I get through a pretty decent number of projects.
I think the only hobby I tried and dropped was hand smocking. I liked doing it, and I buy smocked clothes for my kids when they are small, but it's not a popular hobby here, and the supplies were expensive given how infrequently I actually completed any projects.

I was a big into needlepoint for about 20 years. I even self-published a needlepoint book called Patchwork of Peace that I still sell to stores across the country.
Next was scrapbooking. I have managed to condense all my supplies down to one closet. I haven't scrapbooked in about 5 years.
I still continue to collect jewelry & Kindle books. I wear different jewelry everyday and also read everyday. They both take-up so little space, I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

I buy scrapbook supplies and yarn but I still scrapbook and knit. I don't buy scrapbook supplies like I used to though and purged a bunch.
I don't quilt anymore but I intend to resume it one day so I haven't purged anything.
Over the years I given up and gotten rid of: Cross stitch Collecting cows Collecting Grover items

Well I don't quilt, do mosaics, cross-stitch or embroider any more. Most of the time the only sewing I do is on layouts and cards, though did just make a cushion cover and some PJ pants.

I pretty much gave up scrapping once I finished my son's life of photos up until he went into the military and married. I always intended to do books for the grandkids too, but we all know about good intentions, don't we? I was majorly into doll houses and miniatures for my granddaughter for quite awhile, but that too went by the wayside and I just recently gave everything to my granddaughter for her to enjoy with her new baby girl some day. I used to collect kalaidoscopes and have a nice collection, but I stopped because I just don't have the room for all this stuff! I also used to collect porcelain dolls and jewelry, but I'm getting ready to get rid of the dolls and the jewelry doesn't get worn as much as it used to so it just sits there. Now, like mnmloveli, I read every night so I just collect books on my Kindle.

I gave up scrapbooking. When it became a vicious cycle of buying product, buying storage for the product, organizing and never quite using what I bought, it was time to stop. Nail on the head!! I had about a four year break from scrapping due to time constraints but I hung onto all my stash. I'm so glad I did as I was able to restart last autumn and I have no need to buy anything, I still want to carry out the projects I originally planned and I am enjoying rediscovering things I bought when under their initial spell. My granddaughters spend time with me during the week and love cutting and sticking so my unloved stash is happily used by them. I used to to collect stamps years ago and still have a couple of albums which I hope may be worth a little when I'm gone. One is full of mint stamps from the Middle East that my brother put together for me when he was in the Marines and fighting in Aden in the 1960s. Most of the countries represented no longer exist. I still have, and enjoy, my collection of glass paperweights. I only stopped collecting because the company making them closed. I used to to collect and display China plates and although I don't do so any more, I can't bring myself to get rid of the handful I have left. I know I won't miss them but I do get very sentimental when I see them! I was an avid book buyer but since having a kindle I've got rid of a lot of books and it's only because I don't know what to replace the bookcases with that I still have some. I used to to buy a leather bookmark from every place we visited and got rid of them all - hundreds- a few years ago. I still cross stitch and only the other day bought a fabulous magnifying light which has already made a big difference to me. I have material and bits and bobs from when I sewed and I hope to start quilt making soon. I still have all my knitting needles etc but I find my hands ache when I knit. I intend getting back into crochet soon. I envision myself surrounded by quilts, afghans and scrap book albums when in my rocking chair! I think I'm not very good at the getting rid side but I still have plans for what I've kept.

I have given up ribbon embroidery and counted cross stitch, there are only so many projects you can do before you hit overload. I weeded down my supplies to the basics. I still do a project as a gift on occasion. Same goes for knitting (which I have never been good at) and crochet. I purged my yarn stash and only buy for a specific project and always return leftover skeins promptly. Sewing, I did buy a new machine for household use but I sold my cloth stash.
Next should be my rubber stamp alphabet collection. At the time I rationalized that I would use them for my scrapbooks but I find I use my computer far more.

I was more or less forced to give up my collecting. I was a big-time collector of so many things- vintage toys, books, pottery, musical instruments, and hundreds of other things. I had so many collections that I started a year-long blog featuring one of my collections each weekday, and someone else's on the weekends. Shortly after the blog ended in the summer of 2012, we moved from our big house to a one bedroom apartment 3,000 miles away. We sold many things and put the rest in storage. I brought a few things with me, but obviously I couldn't bring much. Although it has made me sad to give up my collections, the thing that made it so much easier was the fact that I photographed everything for my blog. Now I have a visual record, and honestly don't miss much of anything. Eventually we'll move back to California and I'll get everything out of storage. Most likely we'll move to a smaller house so I'll be happy to keep what I really love, and sell or give away the rest. There are so few things I've really missed!

I stopped buying more cookie cutters when I realized I was just storing the new sets in a cupboard, instead of actually using them. I kept the two big glass jars full of loose ones, but sold the sets that were still new in the package. Regrettably, I have a copy box full of plush Boyd's bears. I feel shame when I think about it. I have sold a couple and really need to dump them out and sell the rest. Most embarrassing of all, when I do look into the box, I think how adorable a few of them are and how I want to keep them. Ugh.

I rotate a small number of them seasonally in a curio cabinet but most of the totes haven't been opened in a long time. The last time I checked eBay most Boyds items weren't selling for much so I may end up donating many of them. My mom recently gave a bunch to the nursing home where my grandmother lives and the residents loved them.

That's part of the shame I feel - knowing how much money I spent on them. I have sold a couple of them on local FB sale boards and really just need to motivate myself to taking photos of the rest and getting them the hell out of here.

I've never really collected anything seriously, although I do have a few "Comic & Curious Cats" figurines, but not a 'collection" I just bought a few I liked and have them displayed. I haven't bought one in about 5 years though.
I used to knit quite a lot and took commissions and knitted for others too, problem is that I don't like wearing wool. I ended up selling off all my completed work many years ago and haven't knitted anything except a scarf in about 15 years. Got rid of all my wool and needles etc a long time ago.
I also used to do counted cross stitch and ran out of wall space. Plus that was in the 1980s when that 'country' look was big in home décor, but it doesn't go with the more modern look I have now, so I still have 2 hanging...and the rest are gathering dust under the spare bed at my mother's house. I have a box of floss and one 3/4 completed project, but that's all. I recently gave away all my patterns and magazines too.
I gave up paper scrapping and sold off about 80% of my stuff a year ago. I do still digi-scrap, but in a more moderate way. Now I don't feel the need to scrap every photo, when I recently did a photobook I scrapped about 6 pages and the front & back covers and incorporated those into the book along with just the pages of photos. Much more practical and achievable than an entire scrapbook.

I gave up counted cross stitch. The tiny squares are too had to see any more. Other than that, I do periodically cycle through my various crafts and I'm not a huge collector of craft supplies so I don't feel guilty about the space taken up with paper, yarn, fabric etc.
I've never been a big collector of decorative/sentimental types of objects. Too long doing military moves I guess. We always had to keep our household weight under a certain threshold and just having the things we used often for living kept us at that weight.

Never got into collecting for the sake of collecting but had and do have hobbies and their related paraphernalia.
I have semi given up scrapbooking. I only make a page or card on occasion when the mood strikes. Like Lauren said the buying and organizing became the hobby, just too much. I have liquidated most of my supplies and materials and now just have necessities maybe a quarter of what I had. It was getting overwhelming. I had so much that I would have a hard time deciding what technique so I would do nothing. Too much pressure to use everything so not fun at all.
I did kind of give up action sports which includes skateboarding and BMX racing due to my work schedule and limited free time. I work crazy long days and many evenings so I cannot make it to the BMX track or skate park when they are open. Without regular practice it becomes frustrating due to slow progress. Have many bikes and skateboards with the hope of going back when I retire in a few years. Probably unrealistic since I will be 62 and not many racers or skateboarders in that age range, but if I can I will do it for fun and exercise.
Have slowed down on collecting Lego since I have found my nitch, concentrating on Lego photography and a few specific themes. Interesting though, in the beginning of this hobby/obsession I spent a lot of time buying and organizing and not building before it dawned on me it was the same behavior as scrapbooking, so I reeled it in and concentrated on building and photography projects and goals. So much happier.

Many things I've stopped collecting but still have and need to get rid of:
Princess House Crystal Vintage Crystal Cherished Teddies - because I bought a few and they became gifts of choice from family and friends. Now they are stored in their boxes in vintage suitcases under the house. Beanie Babies - collected because my new stepdaughter LOVED them and I still have a ton (she didn't have room when she grew up and moved on). Furbies - same as above
Craft related that I have given up:
Scrapbookbooking - toward the end it was more of collecting than creating. Still have everything and need to give away. Cross stitch - boy, I had a ton of stuff. I would seek out cross stitch stores across Texas back in the day. This stuff is long gone. Rocks - quartz, malachite, amethyst and on and on. Traveled all over for those types of stores as well. I have a shoe box full of favorites. Ceramics/painting - the type that had to be fired and the type you buy at Hobby Lobby - villages, Christmas stuff, Easter bunnies, etc.
Now collecting: Fiestaware thanks to the peas. DH would say throws. Always coming home with a new, cute soft and fuzzy throw. Also collecting coloring books/pens/markers/colored pencils/zentangle stuff etc. these days.

Ack, at 62 I think it's time to give up on the idea of skateboarding unless you want to get to know a whole bunch of doctors and nurses at your local ER really well.

I stopped scrapbooking a number of years ago ... dh and I put all of my supplies into a huge collection of Rubbermaid bins to free up some basement space I really don't think I'm ever going to go back to it again so the plan is to sell what I can in a garage sale this year and donate the remainder to our local Children's Hospital
