I want to make shredded pork BBQ using my slow cooker, but I've had limited success in finding a killer BBQ recipe. I like a thicker sauce, slightly sweeter than vinegar-y, but not by much.
Help!

I am no help on the homemade part. I do a rub of brown sugar, chili powder, garlic powder and onion powder, salt & pepper. Throw all of this on a pork shoulder. In the crockpot and cook all day till tender. Take the meat out and shred it. Put back in crockpot and then use a Sweet Baby Ray's sauce from the bottle. I do the original or the spicy one. I find I like the thicker kind also, a bit of heat and a bit of smoke. I think Cattlemans is also a good one. ETA: This is basically my rub. BBQ Spice rub

The recipe I use is SUPER simple. Put the pork (I use tenderloin, but most cuts would work) in the slow cooker with 12 oz of root beer. Cook on low for 6-8 hours, or until it shreds easily with a fork. Drain the liquid. Shred the pork and put it back in the cooker with a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce. Mix it all together. You can serve it immediately (we serve it on Kings Hawaiian rolls - yum!!!) or keep it warming until you're ready for it.
I've NEVER taken this to a party and come back with any leftovers.

McCormick makes an awesome slow cooker pulled pork seasoning packet. You find it in the section with the gravy packets in the grocery store. You add the prescribed amounts of ketchup, brown sugar and cider vinegar and throw it in the crockpot with 3-4 pound of pork. It is perfect every time. My family prefers a vinegar-y pulled pork, so I triple the amount of cider vinegar and it is still plenty sweet. If you made it according to the packet recipe, it would be just what you are looking for.
I cook it on low for 8 hours and then shred the pork right in the pot so it soaks up the sauce, being very moist!

I've also found that it works with coke if you don't have root beer around.

When you click the link the first one that pulls up is pulled pork. I have done this and I will say it is very good. Just know that it is time consuming. AND I even did it in the crockpot. It is very good though.

I just do a simple pulled pork recipe in the slow cooker and then add a bottle of Trader Joes Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce. OMG I am so addicted to that stuff!!! It's a mustard based BBQ but sweet and slighty spicy vinegary. I could drink it from the bottle.

I also buy 15 pound pork butts at Costco and cut them into 4-5 3 to 4 pound pieces and then put the extras in ziploc freezer bags and freeze them. It is so easy and inexpensive to pull a frozen pork butt roast out of the freezer in the morning, throw it in the slow cooker, use the packet to make the sauce, and have it all ready to eat by dinner and all I have to do is shred it.

elaine-I think I'm going to follow your lead and buy several next time I see them. The last two times I've gone to pick them up, my grocery has been sold out! Have you ever added Liquid Smoke? I'm thinking about adding some the next time I make it to amp up the smoked flavor a bit.

I add it to the pulled pork, to my chili, whenever I cook beans, occasionally in soup. Liquid smoke is one of my favorite seasonings.

When I do Crockpot BBQ I use Kraft Spicy Honey and rinse the bottle with vinegar. My DH makes a vinegar base BBQ sauce so that is what the family is used to eating.

I read that as you were looking for a bbq sauce recipe.. SO that is what I am posting. LOL INGREDIENTS 3 cups ketchup ( i use canned chopped tomatoes 4 cups which i start by cooking down and pureeing. ) 2/3 cup dark brown sugar 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup white wine vinegar 1/2 cup tomato paste 2 tablespoons yellow mustard 2 tablespoons pure chile powder 1 tablespoon freshly ground pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon granulated onion powder 1 teaspoon granulated garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger Basically you just simmer all the ingredients for about 30 minutes or until it is the right consistency. ( I think it tastes better the next day. Funny how when you make something all the time you forget how you adjust it. I also add at least one chipotle in adobo sauce. To give it a smoky flavor. I use 2 if my daughter isn't around. I like it a little bit spicy. I started using this when I was trying to cut down on sugar, which is why I used canned tomatoes instead of ketchup. For my x who liked sweet things. I added apples to the tomatoes...2 to three peeled and chopped granny smiths. They added texture an sweetness with out adding more sugar.)

I have tried some of their recipes and they are really good! I know they are more of a travel blog, but they have a lot of good recipes. And their travel pictures are beautiful. I shared their blog with my inlaws who love to travel.

This is what I made just yesterday, however, I use regular Coke. I would suggest to heat up the BBQ sauce before adding it. One time I added it unheated and by the time it heated up my pork was a stringy mess.

I have used Dr Pepper as the liquid. No diet drink at all, it would be gross I think. I shred the meat with the juice and add BBQ sauce to taste.

Easy one in the crockpot right now at my house:
put the pork in the crockpot and smother it with a sauce made from 1 bottle of BBQ sauce (I like Stubbs); 1/2 cup of Italian dressing (I like Paul Newman's); a few splashes of Worcestershire and a tbsp of brown sugar. Cook on low for 8 hours; then shred. It is really great.

This time around I'm doing the McCormick spice pack. It's starting to smell pretty good here! Next time I plan the soda route. I do want to try the more labor intensive one in the link. I just didn't have time to prepare for the various steps this time. It does, however, seem like it would be well worth the extra effort once in a while.

I have a simple recipe that gets devoured when I make it. I slice up an onion and put it on the bottom of the crockpot. Put the pork (whatever cut looks good, but I like something with a little fat) on top of the onions and pour in a 12 oz can of beer. I cook it on low overnight. In the morning, drain the juices and shred the pork. Put it back in the crockpot and add a bottle of your favorite barbeque sauce. We like Sweet Baby Ray's. Heat it together on low for a few hours and it is good to go.
