I'm seeing facebook trending that google is going to shut down picasa by March 15th and make all online albums inaccessible by May 1st. If you are using picasa you may want to double check everything is backed up somewhere else. And spread the word.
eta: Never mind. It appears to be old news.

Blech. Thanks for the heads up. I don't use the web features in it at all, but I use it for all my desktop photo management. I'm guessing this means they won't be supporting the desktop version any more, so even though I shouldn't be affected at first it will eventually become obsolete.
Not old news to me!

I'm trying to figure out if this is old news or not. Like I said, it is trending on FB but not by site I considered quotable. In looking for a better source all I found were older posts about picasa draw down from 2013. But, it seems this may indeed be new? googlephotos.blogspot.com/?hl=en_US

I do like using picasa. I normally export to my hard drive. Now if I am reading correctly, we can still use picasa but it wont have updates or be able to be down loaded after the date in March?

It was still work, as it does right now - but it will not have updates or support later. It also will not be able to downloaded from Google after the date.

Yes, but there's no guarantee how long. Updates to your operating system could break Picasa and you'll be SOL.

That is my understanding. And as pointed out by another pea, any updates to your operating system or a browser update my prevent you from downloading things too. I just know in the past peas have been caught by surprise when a webhosting site has closed with seemingly no notice. 4 weeks online isn't a lot of time.

I thought I read that google was going to head toward an app vs picasa. I skimmed the article, but it is worth a quick lookup on google.

voltagain Thank you for the heads up! I use Picasa for my photos and my digi supplies. But I don't use the online version. My files are on my hard drive and my multiple backup and EHD's. I only use the program as a front-end to view.

I use picassa for the little editing I do and for viewing. What else do you all use? I don't want to have to keep buying Photoshop. Picassa is just so stinking easy.

I plan to need a computer upgrade this spring which I expect to render my CS5 unusable. It seems Photoshop Elements is still available for purchase instead of subscription, for now any way.

You can also use picmonkey.com for simple editing things. It does all the same things as picasa, plus a bit more. But, it is web based, not something you can download onto your computer.
I do use Lightroom for editing and some PSE. I don't use the monthly plan. Picasa was the first photo editing program that I ever understood. I still sometimes will use it quickly and it is the only photo editor on my old computer, which is still hooked up to my scanner and professional color printer. <sigh> I just need to make sure that the photos on the web are actually migrated to Google photos. My dd's Russia photos are backed up on the web version of Picasa!

Ugh, thanks for the heads up. Any suggestions for a computer based alternative? Lightroom? is it easy to learn? I don't want to store my photos on a cloud based service.

I am so bummed by this. I do have it on my desktop, but still, that still means it has a limited lifetime. I use it almost every day. It's so easy to use. I will absolutely have to find something else and start trying to learn it before one day I find my Picasa has become useless, but I have no idea what to try. I liked Picasa for how easy it is to quickly edit photos and for the collages. I never used it for storage.

This is the thing that disturbs me most about using free online services - the company can up and discontinue the product at any time. This is the third time Google has discontinued a service in six years which is what keeps me away from using anything above and beyond their email service and search engine.
With the way Yahoo! is going, I am strongly reconsidering using Flickr and going for something else.
Ugh.

Thank you for posting this! I use Picasa just for viewing and had no idea this was happening! I keep a photo of all the pages I make there and use it to share them with my mom. I just tried to log on to Google Photos and all my albums are there, and it may be a good change for me in the end since Picasa was clunky (I only use the web interface and reordering things was a pain).

This sucks, our family photos are all on picasa online and i love the desktop version. I don't want every photo i have on Google photos, what if i took a photo of my eye to show my doctor i think i have an eye infection? Or i took photos of my stuff for insurance purposes and don't want everyone online seeing that stuff? I like picasa because i can upload what i want. I guess this is the official death of my family photos blog, i haven't updated it in a long time, but now I guess I won't have to ; (

Lightroom does have something of a learning curve but not terribly bad. I just expect it to go the subscription route soon like adobe has done with all their other products. At the moment you can still buy lightroom and Elements (easier to find on amazon than on adobe's site. They are really pushing the subscription)

OK this sucks for me too! Especially since I haven't been able to figure out how to print what's on my screen from Photoshop without it being all weird colorwise. Picasa was super easy and photos printed the way they were supposed to.

If you log into Google Photos, you should see all your Picasa stuff. I don't use Picasa often, but did just check Google Photos and found some things there. I see there is an app you can get for Google Photos that will upload the photos automatically from your phone.

I love PicMonkey for editing and use it 90% of the time. I still store my photos in Picasa Albums but guess I need to move them somewhere else. I have to say I'm really irritated that Google keeps jacking us around by discontinuing services.

I just heard about this today, too. I use Picasa on my laptop and our old desktop to store photos. I HATE CHANGE!!! I'll have to come back to this thread and read up on options before mid March.

Yep, all my Picasa stuff is there too. I'm so glad I don't have to hassle with moving it, and I like the look of Google Photos. I can also see my Google Drive content there, which is where I back up all my digi scrapbooking stuff, so that's more convenient. All my photos are on an EHD as well, and my laptop.
