Yep, you read the title correctly. LOL!
Sooooo, yesterday, I was at work using the bathroom. It's pretty large bathroom with about 6 or 7 stalls. I've never really counted, but that's close.
I was almost done with my business and from two stalls over, I hear --- buzz, buzz, buzz, "Hello?" I recognized the lady's voice ... She's in a manager role a couple of levels above mine. It was very echo-y since it was IN A BATHROOM! LOL
At this point, I'm thinking ... "Really?! You couldn't have waited two minutes to call them back?!" Or, maybe this lady knew she was gonna need a longer bathroom visit and she really needed to take this call ... Whatever!
Here's where the etiquette question comes in ... (Yep, there's more!)
I'm all finished, buttoned up and standing by the toilet, ready to flush ... But this manager-lady next to me is talking on the phone! All I could think of was whomever is on the other end of that call is gonna hear it!
From what little attention I paid to the conversation, I couldn't really tell if it was business or personal ... But I thought, "Should I flush, or wait until she's done talking?"
Really? She's the one taking a phone call while in the crapper and I'm worried that someone on the line might hear a flush. UGH.
I paused about two seconds to debate with myself and then, from the far end of the bathroom, I hear a flush!!! SO I FLUSHED TOO!!!
I opened my stall door and flew out of there like a race horse toward the sinks! The co-worker that flushed first ran out just as fast as I did!
We were holding back the laughter as we quickly washed our hands and booked-it out in to the hallway! We didn't want the manager on the cell phone to see that we were the ones that flushed while she mid-phone-call!
OMG, it was sooo funny and crazy. I was so glad to have my other co-worker there to witness it with me and have the same etiquette dilemma about the right time to flush.

Surely she knew if she took a call in the restroom there might be background flushing. Perhaps she momentarily muted the call.
You were polite to be concerned but it's a non-issue. Background flushes come with the territory.

I wouldn't have thought twice about it - someone talks on the phone in the public toilet, then that's their decision and it doesn't affect me.
I wouldn't feel bad about it...I'm in there doing what people are meant to be doing in there and flushing is a part of that process and I'm also going to wash my hands and use the hand dryer - someone want to answer calls, then they can explain the noise to the person at the other end. Not my problem.

I think it is grosser to walk out without flusing and you have no way of knowing how long her call will last. Were you going to stand there for 15 minutes in a toilet stall waiting to flush? I say "run down the row and flush em all!"

i'm going with bless you for actually being concerned, but dood... if she's taking a call in the bathroom... that's on her. Not you.
Now i do have a friend (happens to be a guy) who not only are we very close but he also doesn't care about... well anyway, he's happy to just keep on nattering whole going to the bathroom or...anything. i... Some people have a ... very practical view on such things.

It always amazes me when people talk on the phone while on the toilet! It's just so off to me. I worked at call centers in college and this was soooooo common! A girl next to me in the stall one time literally was giving her husband the grocery list on the phone while she was pottying. Wtf!

It's routine for a few people at my work to talk on the phone in the bathroom. One girl will leave the cubicle farm to take a phone call in the bathroom. It's very strange behavior.

I'd have flushed. You are in the loo, not her private office. . Tough titty if it blew a business deal. I would also have washed my hands and used the drier, and not tiptoed about doing so. No-one can expect others to hush when they are using a phone in a public place.

There's a lady on our floor who does this all the time. I flush, sometimes more than once.

We have a guy at work that wears a headset if he's making a lot of calls. He goes into the bathroom ALL THE TIME and people make fun of him. These are professional calls! The bathroom isn't big so you can hear him inside talking. A couple of guys make a point that if they hear him or see him go in, they will go in and flush all the toilets. They would do it multiple times, but our toilets take two minutes to cycle before they will flush again.

I would have gone about my business in a normal way, flushing when needed. There is a woman in my office who routinely calls her DH while she is using the bathroom. It drives me crazy. I can't imagine calling someone from a bathroom stall unless it was an emergency.

I would have flushed too. I hate when ppl call me from the bathroom. I refuse to talk. Side note. We have a rule in our house, bathroom door closed, conversations off limits. That is personal time no matter what!

It used to drive me crazy to have people talking on the phone while in the toilet. I always thought that surely the call could wait 2 minutes. But someone explained that unlike me, there are many people on my floor that work by a time clock and are not allowed to have personal calls while on the clock. In addition, they are paid by how many documents they process so they do not typically go to the bathroom while clocked in. So, they have a 15 minute break to go get a snack and/or drink (down on the 1st floor), go to the bathroom, and handle any calls they need to make. I've heard people in the bathroom checking in with their spouses about after work plans, checking in with their childcare provider, or calling to check in on their elderly parent. Or, just checking in with friends or whatever.
I do still flush and go about my business but I've become a lot more understanding at my work place. However, if any of my peers or my manager were on the phone in the toilet then that would just be weird. We have the flexibility to make calls, go to the cafeteria, go to the bathroom or whatever all day long. So yeah, sit at your damn desk and not on the toilet!

I'd have flushed continuously while shouting 'it's not going down'. There really is no reason to talk on the phone in the loo, it's just gross.

I flush multiple times when I hear someone on the phone. I'll even go back in after I'm done and flush another couple times just because I want to get the point across that she's being a loser and talking in the bathroom. If you need privacy there are other places to talk on the phone.
It has never occurred to me to be "courteous" to someone who's dumb enough to talk in the bathroom. I especially think it's crazy when they are taking business calls (something I've heard too many times and will automatically do the multi flush). I also wouldn't race out, I'd take my sweet bippity time and smile at the person if they came out. Why? They know they are being an idiot and I have no problem calling them out on it.

I've flushed multiple times in this situation...hang up the damn phone.
A funny story - I was working with a small pipe fab shop and would call the manager frequently. He's say "hang on while I go somewhere quiet." After months of this he finally told me he stepped into the bathroom off the shop floor! I always had a smile on my face when it got quiet after that.

I wouldn't have thought twice about flushing. You weren't on the phone, so there's no reason for you to be quiet. I wouldn't have rushed out either. If she wanted quiet, she shouldn't have answered in the bathroom.

I might have flushed and then for the heck of it, flushed again! Serves them right for being so unprofessional IMHO.
I do not like it when people are in the bathroom calling me or in a public bathroom talking on the phone. ECHO..... you can tell. I KNOW where you are! Really people, is the call that important that you just can't wait a bit?

I wouldn't not flush, but i wouldn't extra flush either. Her being on the phone, while weird to me, does not affect my life at all.

She took the call in the restroom, so yes I would flush without pause. I can't say and when people talk on their cell in the bathroom.

Meh, I won't judge anyone for taking a call in the restroom. What if it were her doctor calling about something important? It could have been the babysitter or her child's school. Maybe her parent's care giver.

There's someone from one of the offices downstairs that comes up to use our restroom, and is on the phone every, single time. I mean in-depth conversations. No need to worry about flushing when she's talking...she does it herself!!!! My co-workers and I just gape at each other. So bizarre...and disgusting!
I did have a former co-worker who did that. She was on the phone one day, talking to her dentist. Everyone knew this because she was nothing but quiet. (Not just on the phone, but in normal conversation as well.) Yeah, I flushed a couple times on that one.

I know when I was waiting for certain test results from the doctor I would have answered my phone no matter where I was. ETA - I know there have been times when I've missed calls from my doctor and when I've called back he was with a patient so I would have to wait for him to get a free moment to call me back. I'd rather answer the call in the restroom than playing phone tag with him.

I have several toilet friends. We have an unspoken code of understanding that if you are lucky enough to have to go, you go. But that is for home pooping, not public. Maybe she thought she could get the caller off the phone quickly. Whatever the reason, you had every right to flush. Her taking a phone call in a public place is certainly her right, but she doesn't get to stop your flow of the day. Leaving it unflushed would be gross.
