Let's start a list. melissa - there are so many wonderful blogs and tutorials online for inspiration. I actually read them for a couple of years while I was quite ill and learned a lot. then i did take a class. Is there a Modern Quilt Guild branch in your town? Check their website. Search quilt tutorials or modern quilt tutorials. Look at modern quilts on Flickr and Pinterest. Many people who call themselves modern quilters use traditional patterns with new (modern) fabrics or slightly tweak a trad. pattern. I love truly improv, wonky work, the wonkier the better. the creativity out there is amazing! I highly encourage you to get a bit of fabric and some batting and try a small project like a tablerunner. Especially good if you have a machine with a walking foot, or can get one. some of my fave bloggers are listed below. Please add yours.tallgrassprairiestudio (Jacquie is currently president of the giant entity: Modern Quilt Guild) sillyboodilly sewkatiedid blooming poppies (Karen is a friend and I love her improv style! She is not quilting much anymore, but you'll find some great stuff on her blog.) Others, what are your fave sites for tutorials? I have got to run to a couple of back to back meetings.

I don't follow as many as I used to, I still follow:
Cluck Cluck Sew - Alison Harris
Simplify - Camille Roskelly
In Color Order - Jenn Baker
Those are the ones I pay attention to the most.

I follow a site called quilterblogs.com which pulls a bunch of blogs together rather than going to any specific ones. If I am interested in the summary/first few pics/sentences, I click into the blog.

There is a Modern Quilt Guild not too far from me! I think I need to learn some basics first. I do have a walking foot for my machine but have never taken it out of the box. I found some cotton scraps while cleaning out my guest/craft room from when I first got my last sewing machine and I actually have a bag of batting in my closet. Have a few more leotards to do and then maybe I can try. I guess I need an iron too. Mine is not so great. Funny, I was in JoAnn Fabrics today and was eyeing some nice brightly colored packs of fat quarters. At least I would not need to go into the NYC garment district to get fabric for this sort of thing. 4 way stretch lycra is much harder to find locally, especially better quality and more interesting patterns

Speaking of the Bloom Sew Along (so cute!), what weight interfacing is best? I am totally eyeing this quilt as a spring or summer project.

Melissa -- light weight interfacing -- the lighter the better, since it will add to the bulk of the quilt. I would even consider using a water soluble interfacing, so after the first wash, you don't have anything extra stiff or crinkly in the applique portions.

I have a little soluble interfacing leftover from an applique project.
I pretty much have everything I need to make a small project right here. That must mean that this was meant to be!
