I have picassa, but didn't know you could upload. Does it do it automatically?

I have picassa, but didn't know you could upload. Does it do it automatically? I upload pictures to picassa to get them on my computer. I don't do anything else with picassa other than upload pictures. I put my camera card in and choose a folder to put the pictures in and it uploads to that folder. Not sure if I answered your question.

Do you currently store your photos in picassa? If so, what will you use to upload photos to next? So if I go onto picassa on May 2nd, the pictures will be gone? I have all my parents photos on picassa, and they are as clueless as I am about technology. And they live out of state, so there is no way I can get to their computer by May 1st. Not that they take many pictures though, but I feel bad that they may lose them.

It's Picasa (one 's'). I thought they already merged the web albums in Google Photos (or maybe it was an option when I got my Android phone and I selected yes). The desktop software will continue to work, that's all I really use anyway, I don't use the web portion. That sucks, but it's pretty typical of Google to shut down services people are actually using BTW, here's the actual post from Google.

I could never figure out how to organize folders in Picasa and find them. I mainly used it to make quick collages. It seemed like any jpg I ever had on my laptop ended up in Picasa and there was so much there I did not want! I don't know if the photos will be gone, but I think they would be. I'm not tech savvy either.

here's the info from the link SnowWhite posted, with relevant info italicized: we’ve decided to retire Picasa over the coming months in order to focus entirely on a single photo service in Google Photos. We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products. Picasa Web Albums If you have photos or videos in a Picasa Web Album today, the easiest way to still access, modify and share most of that content is to log in to Google Photos, and all your photos and videos will already be there. Using Google Photos, you can continue to upload and organize your memories, as well as enjoy other great benefits like better ways to search and share your images. However, for those of you who don’t want to use Google Photos or who still want to be able to view specific content, such as tags, captions or comments, we will be creating a new place for you to access your Picasa Web Albums data. That way, you will still be able to view, download, or delete your Picasa Web Albums, you just won’t be able to create, organize or edit albums (you would now do this in Google Photos). One thing to make clear is that none of this is happening today—if you have a Picasa Web Album you can keep using it as normal. We’ll start rolling out these changes on May 1, 2016. Desktop application As of March 15, 2016, we will no longer be supporting the Picasa desktop application. For those who have already downloaded this—or choose to do so before this date—it will continue to work as it does today, but we will not be developing it further, and there will be no future updates. If you choose to switch to Google Photos, you can continue to upload photos and videos using the desktop uploader at photos.google.com/apps. Finally for developers, we will also be retiring some functions of the Picasa API. Developers can learn more here. Again, none of these changes are happening today, and we’ll continue to update you along the way. We apologize for any inconvenience this transition causes, but we want to assure you that we are doing this with the aim of providing the best photos experience possible. Google Photos is a new and smarter product, that offers a better platform for us to build amazing experiences and features for you in the future."

I'm not tech savvy either. If you store them on your laptop and the Picasa desktop application has imported them, nothing will change for you. The only thing they're really eliminating is the Picasa web albums. I tend to use PicMonkey these days to make collages, they have many more options than Picasa ever did for collages. But I use the Picasa desktop application for the facial recognition feature. When my sister died, I pulled 37,491 photos off her laptop, I let Picasa scan them all and after a weekend, I whittled that down to 525 photos for her funeral slide show. I could have never done that by hand. Never.

so it looks like if you have photos on the web using the Picasa web albums, you can log into Google Photos (with your same Google ID that you use if you use Youtube, etc.) and your photos will automatically have been transitioned to the new Google Photos software. If you DON'T want to use Google Photos, it sounds like there will still be a way to access the photos that you have in your Picasa web albums.
If you use Picasa on your desktop (which is what I do), they won't be supporting it any longer from a technical standpoint.
Not sure what I'll do about that-- maybe I'll have to actually bite the bullet and learn how to use my Photoshop program for sorting and filing my photos.

ANY storage owned by someone else is controlled by them and can be shut down when they decide to do it.

Thanks so much! Unfortuanetly, I am so clueless with technology, my husband has to set up everything for me. I guess I do use picassa web albums, because the only way I have access to pictures is to click on the picassa button, then the pictures are in all different folders (which I guess is the same as albums).
I really need to figure this out! I don't know how to move my pictures (again, I have the tech intelligence of a one year old) and I don't want to lose them. It may be worth making an appt. with a computer expert or Geek Squad to move the pictures for me and teach me how to upload pictures from here on out.
Thanks everyone for helping me figure this out!

I do miss the days of film and negatives! haha! I "knew" what I was doing with that. With anything computer/online, I have to rely on someone to help me, and that is not good!

I don't use Picasa to store photos at all, but I love it to quickly edit photos. It sounds to me that the Google Photos is more just storage/albums than editing. Is that right? Because if that's all it is, it's not anything I have a use for.

that's how I understand it, too... I use the Picasa software on my computer for editing and filing photos, but none of them are uploaded to the internet at all, and that's what it sounds like Google Photos is replacing-- Picass's internet web albums.
(it says that they won't be supporting the software any more either, but that's not as bad, I guess...)

My understanding is that Picasa and programs like it are simply software programs that allow you to organize and edit your photos. It's not really where your photos "are." What I mean is, your photos are actually in a file somewhere on your computer (unless you've put them in one of these web albums and erased them from your actual computer), and Picasa is just providing you a convenient way or looking at them. If that's the case, your photos are there, you just have to find out where they are. I think Windows 7 automatically puts them in a file called Pictures which can be searched for numerous ways. I'm not a tech person so maybe I've described this wrong, but I don't think it's a big deal. Even the software will continue to work on your computer, they just won't be updating or supporting it.

I've never used Photoshop (it kind of scares me actually - haha) but perhaps I will need to bite the bullet and give it a try. I've been wanting to do project life digital on my laptop (I already use the app but feel I could do more with my laptop) and it requires Photoshop Elements so perhaps this is just the shove I need to finally dunk my feet into the world of Photoshop.
My understanding is that Picasa and programs like it are simply software programs that allow you to organize and edit your photos. It's not really where your photos "are." That is true - for instance, my photos can all be found in the "Pictures" folder on my computer - if I uninstalled Picasa, my photos would still be stored there on my computer - they are not actually stored in Picasa.

Try asking a friend or teenage family member to come over and show you how. It is easy, once you know how. It is the fear that is keeping you from learning how.

If your photos have been deleted from your hardrive they aren't there any more. Each person has to know if they deleted or not. Also, edits would have saved automatically in picasa but not necessarily back to the individual hard drive. So if you have spent a lot of time editing you'll want to make sure. I know technology is moving fast (too fast sometimes!) If you have something important to you in picasa, have a local tech knowledgeable teen/friend or family member help you make sure they are safely stored outside of picasa.

I get nervous when my husband messes with picassa, it's almost as if I need an expert when it involves my pictures. I would love to pay someone to work with me and let me tell them how I would like my pictures to be organized and see if they can "customize' it for me. My husband would want to do it his way. And his way is probably easier for him, but I am the one that takes the pictures, so I need it to be organized best for me. Again, I am worse than working with a toddler! Also, my friends are just a little less clueless than I am, and I only have a few friends that take pictures. My 18 yr. old is in college, so she could maybe help me when she comes home for summer, but it will be later in May. So not sure if my pictures would have "disappeared" from picassa by then. I have a 16 yr. old that may be able to figure it out, but she can't be bothered to put down her phone for the time it would take to help me. And I worry that she would be too distracted by her phone and could accidentally delete all of my pictures! But fear is why I resisted digital camera for years!

Personally, photos are important enough that they should be backed up or stored in three different places - perhaps a computer hard drive, an external hard drive and an online source. I use amazon photos. If you click on the picasa icon on a desktop and your photos are all there (shown in folders), that is the way that the photos are stored on your computer's hard drive. It's just mimicking the file structure. If you go to picasa web albums to find your photos, they probably no longer reside on your hard drive.

My sister's sons look alike and sometimes my son and daughter were put together and they do NOT look alike!

Somehow I lost that first year- year and a half worth of pictures in my "digital ignorance". (at first I deleted photos after printing- except I was printing at home and those prints have NOT stood the test of time. Then I quit printing and and started storing the photos on my computer and lost many months that way). When I lost those months of photos I purchased an external hard drive, a spool of writable disks and a disk album. It might seem antiquated but my photos are now stored on my computer, on the hard drive and copied to disk by year. Overkill maybe but I still cry tears over the lost photo of DS almost 2 yrs and his puppy, ds sitting in the front of his Little Tykes coupe, the puppy in the trunk and DS turned around and I managed to get a photo of them nose to nose checking each other out. It was the night we got the pup. I had it framed for years. While packed away to make room for Christmas decorations it got wet and when I went to reprint it, I found it was one of the "missing photos", I believe from my deleting days.

We are not sure why. I started saving memory cards a few years ago, so I have that as an additional back up. Of course if I had to use old memory cards, then I would have to go through and delete bad pictures all over again (which would take months or years) because I don't delete them off the camera card.

This affects NO photos on your own computer nor does it affect Picasa that you have running on your computer. There will be no more updates and no more upgrades.
Picasa acts as a cataloging system on your computer. That's why, no matter where they are stored on your computer, any photo, and pretty much any jpeg, will show up in Picaca *on your computer.* They are still on your computer even if you delete Picasa from your computer.
Personally, as someone learning Photoshop Elements, I don't know that I would recommend it for people leaving Picasa. There is nothing intuitive about it. It's sort of like buying a bulldozer when a hammer would do the job. If you are not going to use layers and curves, etc, I do not see the point in spending the money or having a program that is so much more than you need. Of course, sadly, I do not have a recommendation for an easy to use, intuitive photo editing program that is not online. Picmonkey is online and is a breeze to use, as others have mentioned.
