Have you watched the series before? I'm just asking because while I'm okay with my son watching it, different people have different preferences about things, and Gilmore Girls definitely hits topics that go beyond what the girls are seeing on Jessie or Full House. I have watched the first 5 episodes (which were very tame) or so myself. What are your thoughts for the tween/teen ages if you've seen it all? The episode I just watched had a couple in bed making it obvious they had no clothes on. Not too bad but I felt like fast forwarding it when dd who is 14 walked out of her room. There was a parental guidance advised warning prompt before the scene began. It's an awsome show though. And I don't think you can't get too bad of shows on UP tv.

When my kids were that age we watched Sliders, The 4400, Lost, Alias, the Mole (the first one), Planet Earth, and some current shows such as Survivor and The Amazing Race. I feel that sitting down together at least 4 to 5 nights a week to watch a show together and talk about it afterwards has really kept our family close. We have a great relationship with our kids and we all have fond memories of watching these shows together. The one with Anderson Cooper as the host? We loved that show! Seems to me they ruined it the second time around.

Joy, yes the American version with Anderson Cooper. Season one is fantastic, season two was a real disappointment but still fun to watch. I think they just really got lucky with the mix of contestants/personalities they had the first season and the final 3 players (I don't want to spoil for anyone) had such great chemistry together and with Anderson. I gave my heart to Anderson after watching this show. It wasn't for a decade or more that I learned he would not be returning my affection:(

My kids are almost the same ages as yours. We love to watch The Middle, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, and The Walking Dead.

Marking my space! Thinking about trying Gilmore Girls with my 10 and 12/almost 13 year old girls. I am kind of sick of Jessie, Full House, Ant Farm, etc! Heartland on Netflix. Horses and teens and a family-oriented (clean) storyline. Just enough mature content to get the kids to think it's a grown-up show, but it's exactly what a teen show should be.

The Walking Dead, my 13 y o loves this show American Crime, this season is about a school, about bullying, homosexuality, and how it escalates, excellent acting (maybe too much for some families) Chopped

I don't think that there is ever full on sex.. but there is the discussion of sex... both Rory and Lorelei...so are you ready to have that discussion with your kids.. then it is fine.

I think that as Rory ages, the topics get heavier, but I still would watch with my dd who is 14. Especially if you are there to talk about those issues.

Psych Leverage Survivor Gilmore Girls
One I haven't seen mentioned yet: Blue Bloods - great family drama (but funny too) about an NYC family all working in law - Dad is police commissioner, granddad is retired PC, daughter is a DA, son is a cop, other son is a detective. There's action, shooting and stuff but not gory. Great discussions at their dinner table that present all sides of an issue. It generates good conversations in our family.

Just getting back to this thread. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I will be looking at all of these and seeing what might work for all of us. It was so much easier to find something to watch together when they were younger ... I miss that!!

We don't always watch together but on and off we watch Survivor, Amazing Race, Last Man Standing, Modern Family, Life in Pieces (it's new this season), Walking Dead and sometimes Top Chef.

my3freaks: I would LOVE to get my kids into Supernatural, but I don't think they like that genre. And my DH doesn't care for the cooking shows (I watch them with my youngest). We might catch up on American Idol, since it's the last season. It's gonna be hard to get the kids to agree on something, though!!!

I don't normally like that genre, at all, but I got addicted to it, and binge watched it. Faceoff is the special effects makeup/design show. It's crazy how creative people are! I haven't watched American Idol in YEARS, but am watching this year since it's the last one. The top 10 are pretty good. I like having the past contestants coming back to help out, and finding out seeing how they're doing now. I just watched the most recent episode and Kelly Clarkson sang a new song of hers, it was amazing. She had everyone crying. I like The Voice better overall though, and the new season starts Monday I think.

At a pea suggestion we watched a few episodes of National Geographic Brain Games. It was really interesting. The first few seasons are on Netflix, but I believe the current season is on Sundays ( ). No need to watch it in any order. Also, my kids turned me onto The Carbanaro Effect. We love that show.

I usually don't watch shows like AI and The Voice, but I've been watching AI this season because one of our local kids was on it (he didn't make it to the final 24 though). I'll be not only watching The Voice but working a FB group (#TeamMarySarah) because this kid originally from Sugar Land TX is a-freaking-mazing! She's a sweet kid, too, and her family is pretty incredible as well. She's already recorded a CD with a bunch of country legends. Can you imagine the look on Dolly Parton's people when they got a call saying something like, "We have this 16-year-old who would like Dolly to sing backup/duet with her on Jolene"?

I have watched the first 5 episodes (which were very tame) or so myself. What are your thoughts for the tween/teen ages if you've seen it all? Well, like I said, I let my son see it (although that just means I don't care if he's around when I'm watching it, he doesn't look to watch it himself), but without giving away 7 seasons worth of plot lines, you have 2 women who will be engaging in several romantic relationships over the course of the show. And while it's nothing rated R by a long shot (It's TV-14), there will be more of the sexual sides of relationship explored than Full House or Jessie would be showing, kwim? I look at it as a great way to discuss things with my son. But I just wanted to let you know ahead of time. My son is 13, and was 12 when he first saw it. The series was off the air at the time that he was 10, but not yet on Netflix, so it wasn't something I had to determine. At that age he thought kissing was gross, so I doubt he would have wanted to watch it. All kids are different, but when I saw you had a ten year old I thought about my 10year old niece and I knew that I wouldn't want to watch it with her, but I don't know if that gut reaction has to do with her maturity or the simple fact that she's not my kid. We let DD watch it at 10. We talked a lot about the story lines and how romantic relationships work. But good to be aware so you can make an informed choice.

your kids might like 30 for 30 on ESPN The Bo Jackson one, Miracle on Ice and Broke are especially good. But I really like them all. other suggestions The Carbonaro Effect and Hollywood Game Night
Amazing Race used to be my favorite show but I couldn't stand any of the "social media star" teams this season so I only lasted for 1 episode. Maybe I'll try again next year.
