My kids are 15 and 12, and are winding down sports practices for the year. We will have some extra time with them, so I'm looking for a program we can watch together as a family.
In the past, we would watch American Idol together, but for some reason we did not get into this season.
Any suggestions for us? What do you like to watch with your kids? TIA

We like The Middle and Last Man Standing, Worst Cooks in America and Cutthroat Kitchen, Artful Detective, Limitless, Shark Tank, Duck Dynasty. Since your kids are into sports, ESPN sometimes has shows highlighting the lives of different athletes, but I forget what it's called.

My dd doesn't like to watch TV but my 12 yo son and I watch person of interest. When we do manage to get dd in the room she will watch Modern Family with us.

Amazing Race would show them all different parts of the world. The good, the bad, the ugly.

Stream West Wing -- there are a lot of lessons in that and most of them go down very easily -- history, politics, manners, morals, writing, communication, journalism, education ..... Dang .. I just finished the series for the 2nd time and I may need to go watch it again!

There have been some good suggestions from everyone. If you can't find a tv show to watch wouldl you or the kids ever want to play a few quick games instead. My kids loved playing games and as young adults still do whenever their schedules work out together. It is a great way to spend time and hear about their days. I also realize that this isn't what you asked but I have no other additions to add to the list.

I'll second the suggestion for the Amazing Race. This season just started (two episodes in so far) so you haven't missed much.

We watch Modern Family, The Middle, Survivor, Project Runway, The X-Files, and Amazing Race. We also sometimes watch New Girl and The Big Bang Theory, but those two are a little racier.
One show my 16-year old dd has been watching on Netflix and LOVES is Merlin. It was originally on BBC I think. My dh and I have found ourselves swept up in in too. It's very good and it's a nice family show. It tells the tale of Merlin and Arthur when they were both teenagers. Merlin was Arthur's servant and was just growing into his magic (which Arther was unaware of). There are five seasons, 13 episodes each, so it could keep you busy for a while. Oh, and we also enjoy Gotham, but we're behind on that one and only have watched the first season. That one is a little less family friendly of a show.

We only have Netflix and YouTube for entertainment, but that's plenty! We like watching Psych, the old Alfred Hitchcock TV series and my DH and boys love McGyver. All of those are on Netflix.

When my kids were that age we watched Sliders, The 4400, Lost, Alias, the Mole (the first one), Planet Earth, and some current shows such as Survivor and The Amazing Race. I feel that sitting down together at least 4 to 5 nights a week to watch a show together and talk about it afterwards has really kept our family close. We have a great relationship with our kids and we all have fond memories of watching these shows together.

My teens and I love flashpoint. It's not on anymore but it's a great action/cop show but it's clean so it's a huge plus for me! And unlike most cop shows they never went to a strip club! Lol
We also watch person of interest, castle, and code black but with some of the more heavy or twisted episodes I don't let my younger teen watch. If that makes sense

Marking my space! Thinking about trying Gilmore Girls with my 10 and 12/almost 13 year old girls. I am kind of sick of Jessie, Full House, Ant Farm, etc!

I'm just asking because while I'm okay with my son watching it, different people have different preferences about things, and Gilmore Girls definitely hits topics that go beyond what the girls are seeing on Jessie or Full House.

My 12/13 year old really liked the Food Truck Race, and he likes the Amazing Race, too. He also likes other food channel contest type shows, particularly those that go on for several weeks, such as Worst Cook in America (as opposed to those with new contestants each show, like Chopped).

I have watched the first 5 episodes (which were very tame) or so myself. What are your thoughts for the tween/teen ages if you've seen it all?

We are loving Life in Pieces right now, super funny but depending on your values it might be a little racy? There is mention of sex and alluding to sex but it's not shown and it is super funny! Survivor just started that's always a fun show and The Voice will be starting on the 29th.

Okay - I thought of a couple more that we like!
Brain Games (on National Geographic - neat show that has fun challenges to play along with)
America Ninja Warrior (or the Original one!)
The Carbonaro Effect - on TruTV (magician that does tricks, pranks)

I have watched the first 5 episodes (which were very tame) or so myself. What are your thoughts for the tween/teen ages if you've seen it all? Well, like I said, I let my son see it (although that just means I don't care if he's around when I'm watching it, he doesn't look to watch it himself), but without giving away 7 seasons worth of plot lines, you have 2 women who will be engaging in several romantic relationships over the course of the show. And while it's nothing rated R by a long shot (It's TV-14), there will be more of the sexual sides of relationship explored than Full House or Jessie would be showing, kwim? I look at it as a great way to discuss things with my son. But I just wanted to let you know ahead of time. My son is 13, and was 12 when he first saw it. The series was off the air at the time that he was 10, but not yet on Netflix, so it wasn't something I had to determine. At that age he thought kissing was gross, so I doubt he would have wanted to watch it. All kids are different, but when I saw you had a ten year old I thought about my 10year old niece and I knew that I wouldn't want to watch it with her, but I don't know if that gut reaction has to do with her maturity or the simple fact that she's not my kid.
