I have been out of the scrapping loop for about 4 years so I am trying to catch up on the trends, etc. I am trying to understand what washi tape is and how you use it? I have a large collection of thin ribbon, do you use it in place of ribbon? Please tell me your favorite uses for it.

I rarely reach for ribbon theses days and recently purged a bunch. I will often use washi in places where I might have used ribbon in the past, more so on layouts than cards. Washi is quick and easy, you can tear it or cut it and the adhesive is already there. There are lots of beautiful patterns and choices. Of course it's not going to give you the same texture as ribbon. When it comes to cards, I'm more likely to use ribbon as it seems a bit fancier and more formal to me. With my layouts, which are usually about my boys, it can be more casual and messy in which case washi works well.

I like wash to add a pop of color or pattern in places. Since its already sticky, all I have to do is tear a section off and use it.

I like it because of the following:
1. it tears easily
2. sticky but can be pulled-off easily and doesn't harm things
3. works as a great embellishment
4. can make an awesome scrapbook page by just covering plain cardstock with strips
5. can be used for lots of other things besides scrapping

It's cute little swaths of pattern and color, it costs less to ship than 12x12 paper and its self-adhesive. And it tears like a dream. It's forgiving. If you change your mind, you can take it up and move it.

I do use it on layouts - eg instead of strips of patterned paper. Also great for dressing up envelopes when sending a card - a quick and easy accent. As others have said Ii like the fact it comes off cleanly if you decide it doesn't work after all.

I think it looks pretty on the roll, so I buy it. But, I rarely use it on a layout.

I love the pretty colors and patterns and that it is adhesive. I will sometimes use pieces of it on the corners of a photo on a layout. I have used it around photos as a mat.

I have some. It's cute and I really, really WANT to like it. But I don't. The stuff just does not stay stuck down and it drives me insane. I like the idea of it but the fact that I would have to glue down something that in my mind ought to just stay stuck down on its own makes me not want to bother with it.

I will put several strips of it on a piece of paper and punch a shape out of it. I also put several strips of different colors all of the way across my layout to make a thick border.

I just used it to hang a bunch of random photos up on the wall. I printed different sizes over the years but they didn't make the scrapbook page and I didn't want to throw them out.

My washi collection is a little bigger than it should be, so I freely use it for other things besides crafting. Here are some:
Use it to secure my pill box so it does not accidentally pop open in my purse. Tape big notes to doors when I need my DH to really notice. Like on the pantry door. Used it as "extra hands" to hold the screws while I put together my Ikea Raskog cart. Wrap some flags around our cell phone charger cords to distinguish which is whose. Recently used it for temporarily labeling some drawers. Use it to color label my crafting tools when going to my SU consultant's parties.

Thanks, I think I will have to get some to play with. Anyone seen some patterns that go with Disney themed papers? That's the next album I plan to work on. Where do you tend to buy washi tape and where can I get good prices on it? It seems much more expensive than the ribbon I usually use and I am a thrifty scrapper (most times).

do you use it in place of ribbon? Yes! Oh, how I used to loathe making sure my ribbon stayed where I wanted it to. And that it didn't buckle the page. And that the ends didn't fray. Washi is just pull and go. Rips/cuts easily. Stays where you put it. Is thin, and adds no bulk. I use it anywhere where I would have used ribbon. I use it as the starting point for an embellishment cluster. I use it to seal sequin pockets decoratively, without using a fuse or sewing machine. I use it as a border. I use small punches and make sticker shapes out of it.

I have seen some Disney washi tape at places like JoAnn's and Michael's in their themed scrapping sections. DD begged me to buy some princess washi once (and yes, I caved and bought it, LOL).

I personally don't like it much and never understood the obsession. The only time I used it I got it free and I backed it with paper first.

I first got to see it in person when I got birthday cards with it on the envelopes at my other scrapbooking message board. I was thinking... this is better than masking tape for holding down my dies. Sometimes, you need to hold a die in an exact spot while cutting. So, I picked up a couple of rolls at Walmart, a pink design Studio G and a turquoise striped Scotch because they were colors I liked in case I really wanted to use them on paper. Worked out great, you can carefully peel it off the paper and it won't cause a problem. I also kind of stick it on my fingers and peel off to get some of the stickyness off, if that makes sense. I've also used it to hold my glasses screw when I tried to put my frames back together. Holds a recipe card very nicely to the cabinet when making something. Great to hold notes to myself on the computer screen (when I couldn't find the miserable post it note pad!). Hold a note to the calendar, hold a bill I need to pay when I get home, and so on. Then, just over a year ago, Walmart had a clearance on Valentine's washi, actually didn't realize that was ONLY for Valentine's until I went to buy a couple more and it scanned half price. A few days later, I decided to get more as I was really getting into using it to mask stuff when I sprayed with markers and to hold the dies and our work schedules! Went to the nearest price scanner and it came up at 10 cents! Wow, went back and got tons more, 28 to be exact. Scanned to make sure all were 10 cents. I gave one to DH and one to a friend, told them to use it like post it note tape. Only time I've used it in paper crafting was when we had a challenge event and one of the challenges was to use 3 designs on a layout or use 3 designs on a card. By the way, the stuff at Dollar Tree is NOT washi tape, it sticks very well. I have a bunch of the dog paw print from there but use it for permanent uses. I had previously gotten another design there, used it to mask and it tore the paper like crazy when I tried to take it off. In fact, I now keep one in the car to use when I need to tape something down well, like an envelope starts coming undone before I get to the post office. Except for I think one other reply, I use it for every except WHAT it was intended for!

Sometimes it's too see through.
Also until today I liked that it was easy to remove if you put it in the wrong place. Now that I used some OA Christmas washi which ripped my paper I'm not so sure I like it that much!

It's a flat, easy to use alternative to ribbon. However, if you have a lot of ribbon you like, I probably wouldn't invest in Washi. It's been around awhile and I think it has peaked.

Those are the ones I use mostly for non-craft related purposes, so I use them up first.

Oh gosh, I use it on everything. Even when you mail a letter, you can add a small piece to the back of the envelope for a little decoration. I have over 100 rolls, and love it. I also LOVE using it in my art journal down the center of a two-page spread to prevent paint from bleeding through. Here are 3 samples along with my blog post. Love the stuff! triplethescraps.blogspot.com/2016/02/tuesdays-tip-preventing-bleed-through.html

I adore washi. As Lavender Lady said, I use it to ground an embellishment cluster. So instead of just a sticker sticking there, I put a piece of washi (when I remember) down first and then build my cluster on top of that.

Most recently I have used it as layers under labels. At Christmas I used it to seal my Christmas cards in the envelopes so I wouldn't have to lick them closed.
For Disney pages I have set aside black, red, and pink ones with white polka dots. I haven't found any of the Disney specific ones to have patterns I liked.
