We are getting one next week and I was just wondering a couple things.
1) how much did your electric bill go up monthly (ballpark)? 2) did you go with an installed charger or are you just using a regular outlet to charge? 3) anything else you think we should know?!?
Thanks!

Our Ford Focus electric costs $2.20 to charge from totally empty. Its rarely totally empty.. There are also lots of places where we charge for free. We have a l2 charger (240 volts). It cost about $500 to buy and my electrical engineer husband installed it.

Our bill only went up about $15 per month but we have a small battery. We use a regular outlet that was already there.
Both my sister and parents have cars with bigger batteries - they put in new chargers but both have solar panels to charge them.

We have a Nissan Leaf. Using 110 (L1) costs about 15 cents an hour and gives about 6 miles/hour. We have a 220(L2) and it costs about 44 cents an hour and gives about 18 miles/hour. We do have a full roof of Solar panels but we live in Nevada where the cost/use of solar is being hotly debated.

I wish we had solar panels! We are on a North West facing mountain in the middle of a redwood forest, so no go. We plan to eventually get a real charger since we will be getting a second electric car 3rd or 4th quarter of this year. But we are (hopefully) about to start a remodel that will require a bunch of electrical work. So I didn't really want to spend the $1,000 now when we will possible have to redo it in the next few months. I figure I don't need which charging, I'm home by two at the latest most days as don't tend to leave the house again after that (we live 20+ minutes from anything, so once I'm home for the day I don't usually leave again), so it can charge from 2pm-8am. Once dh has his, he will be able to charge at work (i think for free?). I just had someone recently tell me that when their dh had his electric car a few years ago that their bill shot up, so I was curious. I'm super excited!

DH has had a Chevy Volt since around May of last year. I honestly don't know how much the bill went up but can guarantee it was insignificant because he hasn't said anything about it LOL. Right now he uses a regular outlet but we are getting the faster charging one installed in the next couple of months.
The only thing I've noticed is that the heater does not get hot as quickly as the one in my gas car does. Oh, and if you are even a little bit obsessive then getting the Lifetime MPH up as high as it can possible go will rule your world LOL.
