A few years ago my dad had a heart attack and was in a nursing home for like 4 months and since then has been very wobbly and underweight and weak. A few days ago he fell outside and scraped his elbow. He got himself up and went in. That night his elbow bled all night and in the morning he told my mom to call an ambulance, which is very unlike him. They took him to the ER where they determined he had a small brain bleed that was unrelated to the fall. They patched up his arm and once his brain bleed resolved he was moved to a nursing home. So they have had him walking a little bit and he seemed to be doing better, but then he quit eating and this morning he was unresponsive so they took him to the ER. My sisters are there now (my parents live in California and I'm in Indiana) but no update yet. He is 82 and used to be the strongest man I knew. Now, not so much.
Just got a text that his vitals are good and they're doing testing. I hate being so far away. It feels so helpless.
thanks, peas.
Update 3-1: My dad's former doctor was called and he went to see him. Turns out the brain bleed had gotten worse and he had too much fluid in his brain (I'm getting all this info 3rd hand so I can only hope I'm using the right terminology). Today they are going to put a shunt in (??) to drain the fluid and the doctor thinks they'll see a dramatic improvement, especially in regard to walking, eating and overall responsiveness. My sisters have almost talked my mom into moving with my dad to Las Vegas where all 3 of my sisters currently live. My mom has been extremely reluctant to leave her friends and shops (she's Japanese so she's particular about where she buys her food) but is beginning to realize she can't take care of my dad on her own anymore. My mom is actually a few months older than my dad but is still in pretty good health other than her knees being shot. At any rate, once he improves enough, they will all be going to my sister's house in Vegas, at least for a while. My parents have a reverse mortgage on their house so I don't think they can sell it to buy another in Vegas so not sure how that will play out. Thanks everyone!
Update 3-3: They did the shunt and drained the blood/fluid but since then he's still unresponsive and unconscious. Today (the 3rd-I'm updating late) my mom was cleaning his face and he had a seizure. Not sure if it had anything to do with her cleaning his face. They put anti seizure meds in his IV and the neurologist is supposed to see him tomorrow.
update 3-13: I got the call this morning-my daddy is gone. He had regained consciousness and then was out again and just yesterday seemed better but stopped breathing during the night. He had a DNR in place. I'm just numb.
