UPDATE 06/10 I forgot I had posted this! I was trying to figure out what threads made up my thread count, since I rarely post threads, and there is was. Rediscovering it was timely though - our trip is almost here!! . Thanks to the advice here, we're going to stay in Anaheim then move to LA. We are renting a car (a friend talked me into a convertible, but I don't think our itinerary takes great advantage of it). Here is the itinerary I have mostly settled on along with some questions (bold): Saturday - Fly in to LAX. We don't arrive until almost 6:00, so we'll probably just drive to Anaheim and check in to Park Vue directly across from Disneyland. Sunday-Tuesday - Disneyland - we have reservations for lunches at Blue Bayou (eating inside Pirates- squee!) and Ariel's Grotto, and I have booked a World of Color dessert party. Is there anywhere else in Disneyland where we MUST eat a meal or snack? We live close to New Orleans and go often, so I'm a little nervous that I will be disappointed in the New Orleans-based restaurants. Wednesday - Drive to the San Diego Safari Park. In addition to the regular stuff, we are going to do the Asia Cart Safari and the Behind the Scenes with the lions. On the way back to Anaheim, we'll venture a little out of the way to go to Melting Pot in Irvine. I know - its an overpriced chain, but we don't have one here, and DD and I are fondue nuts who have only been to one other Melting Pot. Plus, they have a special in June for a free meal for kids with straight A's, and, frankly, the only recognition Alison has ever had for her grades is a certificate from the school. Thursday - we'll play the morning by ear. If we want another Disney day, I have tickets we can use. We might also drive to Huntington beach. At some point in the day, we'll head to the Sheraton Universal where we will stay for the remained of our trip. This is the night of the show we're seeing at the Dolby Theater. So - question here - where would you recommend eating? We could eat near the Sheraton (maybe City Walk) or something near the Dolby. How about parking around the Dolby? Friday - Universal all day. We did book the VIP tour, and I'm kind of super-excited about it. Saturday - WB tour in the morning and Hollywood touring the rest of the day. Sunday - still open. Options include the CA Science Center, Santa Monica Pier, or other touristy stuff that we haven't done yet. We are going to see Finding Dory at the El Capitan in the evening. Monday - fly home So - What am I missing? How about dining recommendations in Hollywood? I feel that I have to fit In and Out burger somewhere. I have a little list going, including some of the restaurants recommended on this thread previously. Oh - I am a little nervous about navigating around CA. Is using Waze on my phone the best option for getting around? ----- ORIGINAL POST I had a small vacation to dig for crystals and diamonds in Arkansas planned for Spring Break, but DD(13) came to me last week with the news that her very favorite YouTube celebrities [Dan and Phil] are doing a US tour. I told her that we would see if one of their stops would work with our schedules, and, if so, we could use the money we budgeted for the Spring Break trip toward a longer summer trip. It will just be the two of us.
After looking at the tour schedule, we decided to see them in Hollywood at the Dolby Theater. I purchased good seats (though even being online at the start of ticket sales, I still couldn't get a ticket that included a meet and greet).
And now, since I love the planning process as much as I love the traveling process, I get to plan our first California vacation (I have been to other parts of CA for work many times). My spreadsheet has been initiated, but I don't have a plan-your-own-LA-adventure message board!
Our must-dos include touristy Hollywood stuff, Universal Hollywood, and Disneyland. I also want to do the Warner Brothers tour to see the Harry Potter stuff. So, I have lots of questions that seem too difficult for Google (web sites just want me to book what they are promoting).
1) Where should I stay? I am reading reviews of hotels that give rave reviews followed by, "But don't walk outside at night...". Hotel or safe area recommendations would be great!
2) What is the easiest way to get around? I think a car rental is probably easiest, but I come from an area where public transportation is not an option. I've only Ubered while traveling with others.
3) I am a self-proclaimed Disney World planning guru, but I have never been to Disneyland. We LOVE Disney, and we want to experience Disneyland, but we don't want the trip to be ONLY Disney. Is two days enough? Disboards seems to suggest 3 as the minimum, but their recommendations are often not one-size-fits-all. There are no little kids involved, we won't be taking long breaks, and we're happy with fast meals this trip. We can go from park open to park close.
4) If we spring for the VIP tour, is 1 day in Universal enough? We have spent many days in Universal Orlando, so most of the rides aren't new to us. We are both Harry Potter superfans though, and we both will want to check out the Hollywood version of the new land.
5) What else do you recommend we do? I figure we'll set aside a couple of days for the touristy stuff.
Can't wait to hear some recommendations!

Rent the car, L.A. is too big to go without.
With a VIP card, Universal is do-able in 1 day.
While I can't recommend hotels, I do recommend that you consider staying next to the attraction you are visiting. So for Universal/Beverly Hills you could stay at the nearby Sheraton. For Santa Monica/Getty Center you stay in a west side hotel. For Disneyland you stay in Anaheim.

I agree with LeaP that you will want to stay in at least 2 hotels for this trip - one in Anaheim and one in LA. A car really is the best, easiest, most convenient way to get around LA. If it is in your budget the Loews Hollywood is a good choice as you are right at Hollywood & Highland, the Dolby, El Capitan, Chinese Theater, etc.. If your are AI fans, this is the hotel they use for Hollywood week. It is an easy drive to Universal and I'd also recommend visiting the Griffith Park Observatory. Staying at the Hilton or Sheraton beside Universal is also a good option for accessing these sites. I think 2 days at Disney is enough to cover both Disneyland and California Adventure. Other LA spots to consider: The Grove and Farmer's Market, LACMA, LaBrea Tar Pits, The Getty, Santa Monica Pier, Abbot-Kinney Blvd in Venice Beach, Santa Monica Food Truck Lot ( this website lists which trucks are there every Tues). Walking around Rodeo Drive and Westwood/UCLA is also fun and always ends with a stop at Diddy Riese for the best and least expensive ice cream sandwich I've ever had.

How fun! Sounds like you have a great start on the planning!
We are in planning mode over here too! DH and DS are going to US in May to see the Harry Potter stuff. In June, all 4 of us will be heading to Disneyland.
Here are my thoughts:
Hotels - The hotels in and around Hollywood seem pretty pricy for "just a place to sleep". I booked my guys at a place close to the Burbank airport instead. For Disneyland, we love Howard Johnson's but you can use the disboards to get recommendations. Best Western PPI in super close to the gates but I would t stay there if you want a nice pool.
Transportation - We always rent a car. If you book thru Costco travel and check the prices every so often, you can get great rates! At Dianeyland, you won't need a car but it would probably be cheaper to keep it and use it for the return to the airport.
DLR - I agree with the disboards, 3 days would be our minimum. Can it be done in 2 days, probably, but 3 (or 4) would be so much better!
US - I haven't been to US since the early 80's but what I gather (from reading the disboards), US is a half a day park without the Harry Potter stuff. With only 2 HP rides it would seem like it is doable in just 1 day. Now I have also read that there could be 6 hour lines for the HP rides once it is officially open. Yikes! Also, if you buy your tickets online, US gives you early entry to the park.
I would also recommend visiting a beach - we llike Santa Monica and the pier or Huntington Beach.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. It sounds like I will be better off starting at Disney then moving to Hollywood. The Loews that bc2ca mentioned keeps coming up in my searches - it looks nice, and the area sounds right. Belle - Universal Florida had huge lines like that at first. About 9 months after opening, we waited 45 minutes to get into the land after getting a return time. Once we were in, the lines weren't THAT bad.

I will come back and answer your Universal questions after we go in late March! (You may have to remind me!)
I think you can do Disney in 2 days, wth the understanding that you may not see/do everything (but prob close to it!). CA is very spread out compared to DL- it's a breath of fresh air over on that side. Even when DL is packed and lines are long, CA never seems to feel so packed. I can give lots of Disney advice (if Dumbo is on your list do it first! That line is ridiculous!) if you need any more! We usually do one sit down meal the whole time. I take drinks and snacks in a backpack and do counter service the rest of the time. I also take and put a blanket (and or jackets) in a locker near the gate of CA for the nighttime parade and/or World of Color show.

Some things to consider doing while you're in the Hollywood area are: Jimmy Kimmel show taping - it's across the street from the Dolby Theater, free tickets at Iota.com, and you have to be 18 Pantages Theater - also on Hollywood Blvd., may have a good Broadway show when you're here. Hollywood Bowl is an iconic concert spot. You may want to see who will be playing there.
My top tourist recommendations are always the Griffith Observatory and the Getty Villa in Malibu. They are both so lovely and unique. The Greek Theater in Griffith Park is also a great concert venue on a summer night.
As for Disneyland, one day in each park should be enough if you get there when they open. Race right to the rides with the longest lines to check them off first.
Enjoy your trip!

If you're flying Southwest, and are starting with Disney and ending in LA, book your flight into Santa Ana/Orange County and leave out of Burbank or LAX. That way, you can plan your route from OC up to LA and not have to double back and waste time on the commute back to an airport.

Hi - We did a similar trip in 2014 and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Highland Ave - walking distance to the attractions on Hollywood Bvld. The hotel was very reasonably priced and had a "boutique" feel to it. They surprised us with at loft room so the kids got to stay downstairs and we stayed upstairs which was nice.
I fell in love with the Farmer's Market at the Grove, we also did the LaBrea Tar Pits and the Santa Monica Pier.
We did all of Universal in one-day with the VIP pass - pre-Harry Potter.
For DL, we splurged and stayed at the Grand Californian which is walking distance to both the parks. We were able to get through both parks in 2 days. My kids were 10, 10 and 8 at the time. If you stay on Disney property you get into the parks before the crowds which helped us getting into Carsland an California Adventure - there is an awesome ride there that you must do!
Your trip sounds awesome and I wish we were going back. I fell in love with LA.

Everyone has given you some great places to visit... Just thought I would add a few that my kids LOVED! We went to Cali 3 yrs ago. We traveled the entire state in 9 days. In LA, go and see the Endeavour Space Shuttle @ the California Science Center. Your son will love it. My kids were all teens ( youngest was 10, oldest was 16) and they were in awe. they could not believe the size of it. it is a truly amazing thing to see as a child and as an adult.
We also did some drive bys -- It is neat to see the Tar Pits and the lights all lit up outside of the LA Museum of Art. Both of these places are close to each other. But one you need to see during the day, the other is neat to see at night.
Griffith Observatory is neat too. We did not have time to go in, but the best viewing of the "Hollywood" sign is from up there.
We did not do disney when we went to cali. We went to Disney World in 2009 and that was enough for my kids. We did go to lego land, it was our 10yr olds dream to go there, so we did. Even the 16yr old had fun and did not complain. We stayed in Oceanside Cali right on the beach at Wyndham Oceanside Pier Resort. My kids enjoyed being at the beach and that put us about 1/2 between Sandiego and LA and not too far from lego Land.

If you want some celebrity sightings have dinner at Craigs's restaurant in Hollywood. Dh ate there last night and said paparazzi were camped out at the front door all night long and flashes we're going off every 15 minutes.
He's really bad about putting names with faces. He said some one from Real Housewives was there, David Spade, Dylan McDermott, Dog the Bounty Hunter and Rick Fox...but also quiet a few he didn't recognize.

We just got back from our trip and wanted to fill you in on Universal.
Definitely, definitely do the VIP tour! It was actually our favorite day of all of vacation. It was amazing and so worth the extra money. The backstage tour is great. They provide cold water and ponchos for the water ride if we wanted. The breakfast and lunch especially are really great food. They are in VIP only locations so it's fast. You feel really well taken care of. You walk right onto rides and have reserved/preferred seating for all shows (so no wasted time there either). So this all makes it easy to do in one day. We would absolutely do it again this way.
We did end up getting to see the Harry Potter part, and that was so fun! My youngest daughter got picked out for the wand choosing ceremony thing -very memorable and neat for her because she is quiet and would never raise her hand to be chosen. We ended up buying wands, butterbeer, and a bunch of goodies at Honeydukes lol. The interactive wands can be used at several areas in the park to do magic and they loved it! The big ride - The Forbidden Journey - has had reports of large numbers of motion sickness and vomiting on the rise. I felt a little bit off but nothing bad and none of the 8 of my party did either. We loved it. My only complaint is the que line is very very dark and the moving floor to get onto and off the ride moves very fast (and since I was a little off balance getting off the ride, I about fell both times getting off- it was annoying!). I think if the brightened the que up and slowed that down, it would be perfect. Flight of the Hippogriff was super smooth and fun, just very short.
Hope that helps!

Are you going to see Dan & Phil? I am taking my daughter. We are taking the the subway because it is super easy.
Insofar as eating, what do you like? Universal Studios is near Studio City. Lots of restaurants there with something for everyone.
We (DD and I) have been considering Chick-fil-a because is it nearish and we have never tried it. Most likely, we will have sushi.

We love Chick-fil-a, but they are everywhere here. Sushi is right up our alley!

Easiest parking for the Dolby is the parking structure off Highland and it is the parking for the Hollywood & Highland mall as well as the theater (and maybe the Loews?). You might get lucky and find street parking. I would eat near Universal or head down to Melrose (Blu Jam Cafe is great - I've only been for brunch and they might not be open for dinner). Another favorite of ours is Fresh Corn Grill. The one in West Hollywood is only a couple of miles away. There is an In-n-Out on Sunset Blvd that is only a few blocks from the Dolby. I'd suggest adding Griffith Observatory to your Sunday options, even if just for a quick, early morning stop for photos and a great overview of LA.

It is a spin-off of Sushi Nozawa, slightly famous for being home of the "Sushi Nazi". I took my daughter when she was 2. The restaurant was absurdly rude, but quickly changed their tune when she ate everything.

DH and DS just went last month to see the Harry Potter stuff at US. They loved it! Sounds like the lines really build after 10am so try to do HP first thing!
I wanted to let you know that in the area of the Chinese theater and walk of fame there are VERY aggressive people trying to hand out "free" CDs. You can google what the scam is about but DH was taken aback about how persistent they were. Just keep walking and ignore them.
DH and DS mainly ate at the city walk but they yelped a place for breakfast one morning called Bebeas. They said it was amazing!
I would definitely go to the Santa Monica pier - really fun and a beautiful beach! You will just be a few miles from Malibu too.
We will be at Disneyland next week! Love Blue Bayou!

If you go to Huntington Beach, park at Pier Plaza. Take the stroll on the pier. It's beautiful. And at the end of the pier, eat at Ruby's Diner. You might see some whales or dolphins while you eat. It was one of our favorite things!

We just got back from Disney / LA last week and had a fun time! We heart the Park Vue and have stayed there many times. The location can't be beat. I really think 3 days in Disney is enough. We've always done 3 days, especially when the kids were little / slower. This time we did 2 days and it really was enough time so your 3 will be plenty. Disney tip - the big rides are good with the fast passes, which I'm sure you know. We always do 1 ride with the fast pass and then we switch to single riders. The single riders line moves so quickly for certain rides - do a search on which single rider lines are worth it. With our fast pass we waited 10 min in line at radiator springs but with the single riders line we waited 2 minutes. And that was with me waiting to get in the same car as little dd. We sat next to people who had waited 2 hrs (omg!). We rode again and again with the single riders line. My older dd wanted splash mountain but we didn't - took her less than 15 min w/ the SR line when the regular line was an hour. The ride to go to first thing in the morning is toy story at California adventure. Longest line ever, no fast pass, great ride. We prefer the food in California adventure - we find it a bit healthier. My dd likes the pineapple dole whip at the tiki house (fun show don't miss it) but the line up was too long this time for him to get one - I didn't want to wait. We just did Universal CA and for sure you can see everything in one day. We didn't spend the whole day - left a couple of hours early because we'd done everything (except Jurassic park - no one wanted to do it). The ride line ups were not very long. At the height of the day they got to 30 minutes but those were generous estimates because no line got that long. We got in 1 hr early and did the Harry Potter ride a couple of times before it got busy. There was no wait. All of the rides (except Jurassic park which has an 80 ft drop and the mummy - which I wouldn't do because it goes backwards super fast and I was scared I'd get a migraine) are all 3D simulators so they can be nauseating if you do them too many times. We all felt a bit yucky after HP. We recouped though - transformers was great and so was the Simpsons ride. One thing I'll say - we ate in Springfield (it was extra hard to find healthy food and the food lines were long - give yourself time). We are by the donut shop. There are the most massive donuts possible. Two families sat next to us and both families asked if we'd share their donuts because they just couldn't eat them all. We met nice people and shares tasty treats. We decided they were the best seats ever . Ha ha. We stayed at the Hilton across the street. Good location. Not much around there. We didn't go to city walk. We've been before and wanted different food. We stayed at the Lowes in Santa Monica so right by the pier. The pier is nice. We were there for a family function so we had 20 family members and 20 friends staying there - my sister also lives in Santa Monica so we've been there a lot - so we stayed at the pool a lot. The pier was fun but after Disney.... My girls got their names done where they paint the letters in animal pictures and they're up in their rooms already. Cool souvenir. Relax by walking on the promenade, visit the grove. We had some good kosher Persian food and ate at a very authentic and delicious Israeli place called Taeen which was highly rated. Loved it. Have a great time!

Just want to add - we got suckered in to buying butter beer at Harry Potter world. DH had read reviews that it was gross but I hadn't so when dd asked I said ok. Omg - it was so gross. The consistency is a slurpy and the taste is supposed to be caramel-ish. It was more like just slushy sugar. Dd drank less than a quarter of it and then it went in the garbage. I was upset that it was wasted but wasn't thrilled with her drinking it to be honest.

If you have time, stop at Luganna Beach. I have spent many days there going to the various galleries and sitting by the beach.
Have lunch at Cie la Vie, close to the main park. Delicious food & a great view from the balcony.
