I was shopping over the weekend and popped into my local Goodwill and I was astonished as the pricing. $1.50 for a chipped coffee mug, $12 for a worn blouse complete with pilling under the arm, and the most shocking of all was a twin blanket (albeit Martha Stewart brand) that was marked $45.
I haven't been in a Goodwill in several months, but good grief..I can go buy a blouse on clearance for less than that, and I can buy a brand new twin bedding set at Macy's for $45.

Someone on the pricing crew must have been smoking something that day! Those prices are nuts for used stuff.

That's what it's like around here. we have lousy thrift stores. The Salvation Army store is even worse it smells, the items smell, nothing is clean. I went once to find jeans to alter into bell bottoms for DD and found way cheaper jeans at kohls clearance rack.

It's funny, my cousin was just complaining on Facebook about the same thing. He had gone to Goodwill this past week and was amazed at the prices. Perhaps it's just another example of a greedy CEO, after all, he pays nothing for his product and pays his employees next to nothing, why not get the most for the merchandise as possible?

My favorite thrift store will have prices like that, and some that swing the other way too. It will have a Kohls Jennifer Lopez blouse for $9, and a Chico's blouse for $3. Works out great for me, the boring middle aged Chico dresser. And they'll get the price for the JLo blouse too.

Our Goodwill generally have decent pricing but you can always find something completely out of whack. I saw some designer jacket tagged at $120 and I thought even if it had that kind of value, I cannot imagine most Goodwill shoppers are handing over that kind of $ for clothing, even on 1/2 off day.

My Goodwill prices crappy, old used furniture as much as I would pay for something new at Ikea. It's crazy!

Goodwill seems to price things so high so that people think they are getting deals on the 50% off days. The ones near me in Phoenix and also Tucson have jacked up the prices. But the one in Flagstaff has better prices... Goodwill is really the bottom feeder of the thrift shops as the CEO gets rich while paying the employees really low wages. But many of the employees are on parole or from mental hospitals. My friend who is an RN in the psych ward says once they get stabilized, they start at the Goodwill. I never donate to Goodwill. The Salvation Army store in Flagstaff stinks and looks like a hoarder is in charge. I really like shopping at The Assistance League and the hospice stores. St. Vincent in Flagstaff is really good but the one here in Chandler AZ is really bad.

Ours is very over priced. I never find anything worth buying. A lot is worn looking, whether it's clothes, kitchen stuff or furniture. I always walk out scratching my head.

Our area Goodwill pulls all the nicer designer clothes from the donations and sells them at a separate more upscale location called Second Debut 2. I haven't ever gone in there so I have no idea what they have in there or how it's priced. I've seen things locked in glass cases at the front of some of the regular stores that make me say, "Huh? Really?" Like an old non-name brand Walkman type tape player or portable DVD player.

I have found that Goodwill seems to be overpriced in my area lately. And I now choose to donate my gently used items to St. Vincent DePaul as they tend to price very reasonably, and they fulfill a lot of immediate needs in the communities that they are in.

Goodwill in Canada recently file for bankruptcy- they closed all their store and have not paid the employees the last wages owed to them- maybe goodwill in usa is in financial trouble too?

I went to goodwill this weekend and got two pairs of jeans for $7 each, so I think it is specific to your local goodwill.

The goodwill by my house prices the same way yours does. Last time I was in there there was a $20.00 Scrapbook Paper Pack (from Hobby Lobby that you get for $10.00 every other week b/c they are 50% off) well this one was clearly used and on sale for the nice price of $15.00. That is normal for this store too. Kids clothes are not usually priced under $10.00 for anything.
I quit going in ours

It's very specific. I've been to Goodwill stores that had great stuff and prices, and then ones that had awful stuff with ridiculous prices. As far as them hiring those with criminal pasts, drug or mental problems, etc that's one thing I LIKE about them. That's part of what they're supposed to do. I'm glad some of those people can get a second chance there.

Ours are uneven. Some things are fair and others more than new. I think there are certain brands that get marked higher sometimes, but then there are great finds, too. Inconsistent.
I doubt they are in trouble. Opening new stores around here. I now have a bunch in short driving distance.

Last Halloween we went to Goodwill looking at their Prom/Wedding dresses for a not so pretty white dress for a zombie bride costume. We found a ripped stained dress that would have been perfect and they wanted $145 for it! I'm sorry I don't know anyone who would pay that for a ruined used wedding dress.

Our Goodwills are very expensive too, unless you go to the bins where you pay by the pound. I won't shop there though since the One who runs the ones in our state has said she terrible things about the disabled employees and gives himself nice fat yearly bonuses. I shop at our local Humane Society Thrift store, great prices and they also employ disabled adults and treat them with dignity and respect. I only donate there as well. I love that the money helps animals. Our Salvation Army store is terrible, things are just thrown on the shelf ( yes I have witnessed them putting stuff out), games are always missing a significant amount of parts and the toys are in terrible shape. On top of that they are very expensive. I appreciate their cause, but they charge 2.99 each for kids books and they are not in good shape. I can get books in better shape at the Humane Society for 79 cents or value village for 99 cents.

When i was looking for a used bureau to use as a changing table dh ducked unto good will and said the only bureau wad $350! The crazy part was it had a sold tag on it! I ended up getting one from Craigslist. Sent dh for a 45 min drive for a birds eye maple vintage dresser for $25 and the lady gave it to him, turns out she wanted to give it away but put a price to discourage pickers. What was extra nice is she was happy it was for my son since it was her childhood dresser.

Those are some crazy prices!
I can't remember the last time I was in Goodwill, so I have no idea of prices locally.

A few years back, after seeing people online raving about the deals and treasures they found at thrift stores over the winter were there were no garage sales to check out, I decided to check out the ones around here. What a disappointment! It was a similar experience to what you described.

Ours went crazy a couple of years ago. You can still find deals, but you have to look. Sal army is just as bad. I wanted a comforter to use inside of a duvet and sal army wanted $45. For that price I can get a new one at target!
We have s couple others that are pretty reasonable. I think you just have to look.

I was out shopping for serving dishes for a baby shower and ended up buying new at Marshall's and TJ Maxx for just a few dollars more for each piece. I was shocked at the prices. Out of four different stores (Salvation Army, Goodwill and 2 different Value Villages) I bought one item. It was a wooden cheese platter for $6.99, which was the best priced item I found and I love.

Jeans are 5.99 and tops 3.69. When I have found a Price way out of line,I have questioned it and sometimes it is changed. I still find great deals, although sometimes I am amazed!

huh-- I never see prices like that at the Goodwill stores I frequent in the Phoenix area; or at least if I do, I skip right over items priced like that. I usually look for clothing when I'm out thrift shopping...
The most I've paid for any item of clothing is, maybe $9.99 for a dress, and $7.99 for a pair of jeans. But typically, I won't spend over $5 for a skirt, or $4-5 for a shirt. I have good trips and bad trips, but overall, Goodwill is the place I find the most / best deals. (maybe it's the particular stores I shop at? I don't know; I have found a few I will NEVER shop for clothes at, a few that have 'okay' stuff, and a few where I can always find at least one item of clothing worth buying, if not more.
eta: I do think maybe the pricing has somewhat to do with how much the person sorting / pricing the clothes knows (or doesn't know) about brands... I've seen trendy brand items with higher price tags than I thought they should have had, but I'm guessing that's because it's a brand they've heard of and they think the item will be popular.
I've also seen very high-end brand name items that have $3-5 prices on, because whoever priced the items didn't know it was a designer name. I'm guessing they may do some online research, but if they don't know the brand name they won't know to research the 'actual' cost of the item... and I'm sure they don't have the time to research every item, so they don't really know whether the price they pick is reasonable or not.
I've seen rubber stamps that I know are from the $1 bin at Michael's with a higher price tag on, but the Goodwill employees certainly wouldn't know the Michael's prices as well as I would, so I don't begrudge them slip-ups like that.

We stopped going to Goodwill for this very reason. I now go to the Thrift store run by my local no kill animal shelter. All proceeds go to help the animals, not the higher ups.

the Goodwill in my area is over priced too. My favorite thrift store is the Idaho Youth Ranch. All proceeds go to help at risk youth. It's a great cause and they price things very reasonably.
