**update** Thank you all for the kind thoughts it helped to read them all. He finally got his pain under control after about 3 hours . Then we came back to the room and I spent a good portion of the night trying to keep him comfortable. We got some sleep from around 4am-6am which is a record for the hospital. He will be getting up to walk in a few mins. He has about a 10 inch abdominal incision so he's a little worried about this, but also very determined to heal well and go home by the weekend.
He has crohns disease and the surgery was to remove a section of his small bowel. He already lost his colon years ago. We lost his mom to a mrsa infection in 2006 following a similar surgery so I tend to really feel panicked when he has surgery. In addition he has been struggling since last May and so the loss of Akathy hit especially close to home for me these past months.
Again. Thank you for again being a space to vent and worry.
is the worst.
Everyone is chatting and laughing and talking and I just want the knot in my stomach and the lump in my throat to go away. It won't until he comes out. It's still a few hours probably. Historically his surgeries don't go well, and take much longer than expected.
I'm so worried and stressed out, but my kids are here so I have to keep putting on my mom face and stay positive.
All I really want to do is curl up in a ball and sleep and wish it was over.

Hang in there-- the waiting IS the worst part. Just pray for peace and try to focus on your "mom face" for now. Hope this is a smoother surgery than seems to be the norm for your hubby.

Oh, honey. I am so sorry you're going through this. Try to take some deep breaths, all the way down into your stomach. And get up and walk around a little bit. I will pray for your husband's safety and for your peace of mind.

That sort of waiting is the most awful experience! Hope it won't be long before he's out of surgery. Sending lots of hugs and good thoughts your way across the Atlantic.

Take a deep breath. Take another. And again. You are probably shallow breathing right now and that is not helping. Your husband is in expert hands. It is always stressful for those in the waiting room. Breathe. Use the bottom of your lungs.

thanks everyone. I'm trying to breathe. I had the flu last week so that's harder to do than you might suspect. The last time he had major surgery we were younger and dumber and poorer. This time we are not, and so his preparing for a worst case outcome has had my anxiety level at max. I know it's likely fine, and that he is smart to have things in order, but it really made me feel panicked and that hasn't subsided.

It is so hard to wait! My husband had one surgery and I wasn't satisfied until I could see him and talk to him. Till then, I was sort of a basket case.
I only tell this story to entertain you- My SIL came to sit with me and the very second they showed us into the waiting room, she turned to me and asked if I wanted to visit the gift shop. Of course I wanted to sit there and freak out on the inside! My SIL isn't bad, she just has the energy level of your average jack rabbit. And she loves to shop!
Best wishes and prayers to you and your husband and the doctors!

I have learned that waiting without a support person for me is not good. I need another adult to distract me when DH has had surgery. He's had four since we married and I waited alone for two of them. My mind is my worst enemy in those situations. Hugs and prayers for a good outcome.

My mom flew in, my kids are here, and a good friend of ours. I just have no desire to chat/laugh/make small talk. So I feel rude, and like a trapped animal. But here I am. I feel like at least in my own head my cranky self isn't impacting others negatively.

Praying it goes well and he gets out sooner than expected. My DD does the same thing--takes longer and has a worse outcome than expected. I am sitting in her hospital room with her right now--2nd heart surgery since Feb. 10 of this year. I find going on a walk and people watching always helps. And if your weather is nice, step outside. It does the body SO good to get fresh air and some sun. Hugs and prayers!
