So, I paid the $16 to join AARP for 3 years when they sent me the form the week I turned 50. I haven't used it more than once in the year and a half I've had it.
Well, we were very late in trying to make hotel reservations for the beach this weekend for dh and my anniversary and my younger son's birthday.
We couldn't find a nice hotel for under $450 up in Rehobeth Beach, so we decided to try VA Beach. The Sheraton right on the beach was more affordable, and, importantly, on the beach. While looking up specific rates, hoping for a military/govt. rate, I noticed they had a AARP discount, which pulled up a rate that was $65 less per night for an oceanfront view - 2 queen sized beds.
So, I'm here to say, AARP is worth admitting I'm over 50! (I'm cheap - $130 is worth more than my vanity)

Way to go on the $130!
I tell you, that $16 fee has more than paid for itself. So worth it for the discounts.
And so worth it to wave those discounts in front of my older sister who is too vain to get her own AARP card!

It isn't going to make me any younger to refuse them. I use to live in Va Beach. I stayed at that same hotel a few times and love it..it was oceanfront with a balcony. I'm glad to hear from someone who has actually stayed there - it is so hard to tell online, and even though we've lived in NoVA 11 years, we haven't made it down to VA Beach yet, so this will be a first.

Great place to eat for breakfast is Pocahontas Pancake House right on Atlanic Blvd. so I'm sure you can walk to it from the hotel if you wanted. They were on Food network and voted the best in Va Beach. You won't regret eating there.

Dh dh wants to try the Yardhouse. Do you know it? It sounds like it has a large selection of beers on tap.

DH and I joke about the mailings we got from them for our 50th birthdays. I think I will have to actually sign us up now!

I went to Virginia Beach earlier this summer. My recommendation for breakfast would be a place called Citrus. I had soft shell crab eggs Benedict with a Mimosa. Divine.

I think Citrus was featured on Diner's, Drive-In's, and Dives. It sounded awesome. Have fun in VA Beach. I've only been once, even though I've lived in Virginia since 1982.

What a great discount - and you can legitimately treat yourselves to a really nice meal or something else whilst away with your 'savings'.

I love those discounts for AARP and the many others that come from hitting 50. It kind of took the sting away. Now I am approaching the "60 and older" discount mark.

I will add that to our list. We are all foodies in my family, so are looking forward to some great eating. Never been there but if I think of other places I will message you. One of the many things I loved was the verity of wonderful restaurants. thank you, again! I think Citrus was featured on Diner's, Drive-In's, and Dives. It sounded awesome. Have fun in VA Beach. I've only been once, even though I've lived in Virginia since 1982. We have lived in NoVA for 11 years now and this is our first time going down to VA Beach. Hopefully it will be the start of a family tradition. I grew up in So Cal and love the beach, but my husband doesn't. If I can keep him well fed and hydrated, I'll be more likely to get him back.

Yes, it was. My youngest son loves that show and he wanted to hit up a restaurant or two that had been featured on it. The other triple D place we went to was Doumar's, a drive-in in Norfolk.
For dinner one night we did Lynhaven Fish House which had terrific views. It was very good. We also did a little local place called Margie & Ray's in the Sandbridge area with surprisingly low prices. Three of us split Margie's Hurricane Platter and still couldn't finish it. It was piled with fish, shrimp, scallops, deviled crab, oysters, clams, hushpuppies, and fries.
I lived in Newport News for five years waayyy back. There's so much to see and do in that whole area. My son in the Navy is currently assigned to a ship out of Norfolk so a visit to him was the purpose of this recent trip.

I've stayed there too! I do like a restaurant called ca Catch 31. (Extra ca in there I can't delete) it's in the hilton I believe. But last time we went it was so darn loud in there so they sat us outside and we had a nice romantic dinner listening to the waves. Enjoy!!!

There was always a 1 hour wait, so we only did it one morning. We also ate at the Yardhouse which was yummy too. Tons of beer on draft, which is why dh picked it. I had lobster and shrimp pasta that was delicious. It rained on and off all weekend, but we still had a great time.

Glad you had a fun stay! Were you happy with the hotel location? The Sheraton was great in some aspects - right on the beach, our room was very nice, the pools were good, nice wine selection. The downside, and why we would never return, is that there were only 2 elevators and NO service elevator for a 14 floor tower. There was always a loooong wait for an elevator up or down and not uncommon to have to wait for 2-3 elevator cars that were packed with people and bellhop carts before we could catch one. It was deal-breaking inconvenient and unsafe in dh and my opinion. But, we could live with it for a weekend and we have a better idea of the layout of the community so that we can pick another place when we go back!
