Yesterday morning, my DH took his normal vitamins, and a few minutes later experienced some significant chest pain. He explained it as if one of the vitamins got stuck in his chest. It passed after a minute or so. Then last night, during dinner, he experienced the same thing - significant chest pain, and had some trouble breathing during this episode. It went away after a minute or so, but he said that his chest felt weird. I asked him if it was "tight", he said he wouldn't describe it like that. He says it is more like a muscle is aggravated from whatever the "episode" was. This morning, when I asked him how he was feeling he said same as last night, but feels like he can't get a real deep breathe. I said he needed to call the doctor and get an appointment, he declined.
So, 9:15 am he calls me and says that maybe he should get an appointment, just because he is worried that he can't get a deep breathe. Called, all appointments are taken for the day, they recommend Urgent Care. He despises the UC, and refuses to go. He says all UC does is put a bandaid on everything and feels like he will not get personalized care.

He needs to get to the doctor now. Get him into UC as soon as you can. Those are serious symptoms.

ER now!! drag him there if needed. Chest pains as you describe are not worth taking the risk with. I hope it's all OK but really he needs to be seen to pretty quick IMO.

I feel the same way about Urgent Care - I think they hand out unnecessary antibiotics like candy. I would much rather see my own doctor. That being said, I have never NOT been able to get a same day appointment with my Dr, as long as he is in the office and hasn't just come back from vacation. In that event, I have always been able to see one of the other Drs (that has happened ONE time in 18 years). I wouldn't be happy about a Dr who doesn't leave room in his schedule for same day appts.

I would bypass UC and take him to ER. I've only been to ER twice, the first via ambulance and the second on my own, so that's not a suggestion I offer freely. Chest pains should not be taken lightly.
Our Urgent Care is far from impressive, and they bill my insurance the same as an ER visit.

I'd take him to the emergency room immediately. If this is the early sign of a cardiac event, earlier intervention is much better than waiting. If he's already had a small heart attack, he needs treatment now.

My doctor's office would not give an appointment for the symptoms you describe, even if there was one available. They would advise urgent care or ER pronto. (I called once when DH had chest pains due to a pulled muscle. They said they aren't allowed to make any appointments for those type of symptoms because they are too urgent.

You need him to be seen in an ER. Trouble breathing is an emergency.

I agree with your DH. If he won't go to the ER, can you call your own primary care physician's nurse? I have had to do this. My own doctor would see him or get him in.

Go to the ER now, seriously. Chest pain and trouble breathing are classic early cardio symptoms. One episode you might be able to blow off as a weird vitamin getting stuck - but multiple?

ER now. Urgent care is just going to send you there anyway, since he's complaining of chest pains. Never, ever mess around with chest pain.

I hope you are at the ER with him now and that everything is okay. If he won't go, something I do with my husband is ask him what he would want me to do if I was having the same symptoms.

I am not one to go to the ER-- heck, we didn't go to the ER when I felt bad and it turns out I had a stroke-- but NOW, I realize just how stupid it was to not go, and just how LUCKY I was that I didn't have any permanent disability from my own stupidity.
It may just be a pulled muscle, dislocated rib, muscle pull at his sternum-- something innocuous like that--
but let the ER diagnose it and (hopefully) rule out anything more serious.

I'm a hospital charge nurse and I would also agree with ER. Even with urgent care, they will sometimes send people over to the ER after some work up. Please update us!

I had the "stuck pill" issue late last year with similar symptoms. My doctor said he couldn't do anything so I needed to go to the ER. Had an endoscopy done there, etc... It's a very painful issue! Hoping that is what your husband's issue is too, and not something more serious! Thinking of you! Keep us posted.

Chest pain with trouble getting in a good breath is a classic heart attack symptom.
Go to the Emergency Room NOW! As in he should have already been to the ER hours ago. Go, go, go!

I'm dealing with my own heart issues (most likely cardiomyopathy). I thought it was another bout of CostoChondritis (which sent me to the E.R 4 years ago because I thought I was having a heart attack). Earned myself a nice lecture from from PC about getting to the E.R with chest pain.
Even when I went with the CostoChondritis & I started to feel silly (I mean, really, who knew rib inflammation could give heart attack symptoms), they never ever made me feel anything but smart for getting to the E.R with chest pain symptoms.
Please take him to the E.R. They won't discount him & his symptoms & he will get personal care, They take chest pain very seriously.

When my dh presented at the ER with chest pain, erratic heartbeat and profuse sweating they took him right back. It wasn't 5 minutes after we walked in and he was already seen and sent for tests. His turned out to be heat stroke but they do take chest pains very seriously.
Please update us when you can!

I do hope you write back to say you took him/made him go to ER!! TODAY!! 7 years ago, after his brother died unexpectedly, my DH said, 'You know, my chest feels heavy and I have this pain down my left arm." WHAT? ? I almost jumped out of the chair. Found out he had had this for a few weeks(!) He got to the dr. the next day, and he ended up with a stent in his heart vein by the end of the month. --I still cannot believe the man was willing to ignore classic symptoms of heart troubles.

Esophageal spasm, possibly, and probably not a heart attack from what you described...BUT you know no one in healthcare is going to tell you to ignore it! Really no way to proceed without testing. At the very least, an EKG and cardiac enzymes will help rule out the serious stuff.

I agree bypass UC and go to ER with not being able to take a deep breath. They can rule out the serious stuff and run the other tests that need to be done. Hope he gets good care. Don't ignore it too long.
