It's a day off for us. I believe that it is IL law that school must be closed on Good Friday, no waivers permitted.

It's the first day of Spring Break in the district I work in so we have it off. My kids have graduated so I don't keep track of the district I live in any longer.

Get this... We had spring break LAST week. And we have Good Friday off, as well. So all last week off and a 4 day work week this week as well. You'll get no complaints from me.

DS is off on Friday. Good Friday is a snow day and if it's needed then they have school. Last year they did have school on GF, but this year they don't as they didn't need it.

It is a Bank Holiday in the UK, as is Easter Monday.
Schools tend to have around a fortnight off over the Easter Break.

I'm speechless. I can't imagine Good Friday not being a public (and school) holiday! It certainly always is in Australia.

I don't have kids but it's always a public holiday here in New Zealand, as is Easter Monday. So schools are closed. Same in Australia.

Thursday to Monday are mandatory holidays here, so the entire country shuts down (grocery stores will be open for a few hours on Saturday, and also the malls, but independent stores are typically closed).

My oldest (in one district) has Friday and Monday off. My two youngest (in another district) only have Friday off. Both districts have spring break the first week of April this year. There are some districts locally (but different county) who have next week off for spring break.

our kids have school. I was surprised, but then I realized they've only had it off before when it fell on the Friday before spring break.

It's an early release day for my son and they have next week as Spring Break. I don't recall that we've ever had it off completely unless it fell as part of Spring Break.

We have school on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Spring Break for our county is always the first full week of April and the Easter holidays are not taken into consideration.

The community college I teach at is closed for Good Friday ("Spring Holiday"). However, it won't affect most students because they go to class on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. The office staff will enjoy the holiday, however.

I don't think it's a holiday in most Massachusetts schools. Certainly not a public holiday. Our school has an early release, with teacher workshops in the afternoon. We have one of those a month.
Our spring vacation isn't until the week of April 18th. It starts with Patriots Day, which is a Boston public holiday.

I'm speechless. I can't imagine Good Friday not being a public (and school) holiday! It certainly always is in Australia. I am on the other side of the spectrum. I am speechless as to why Good Friday needs to be a holiday at all! I have never heard of school being out or being a public holiday. I went to school in NY & NJ and now live in GA with one school age child.

No school here so DD and I are off (Hubby's office is open half a day).
My DD's high school soccer team is in playoffs and they could have played Thurs/Fri/Sat. Thankfully the coach of the other team agreed to a Thurs night game, so we have the weekend off completely.

Are you speechless that other religions high holy days are not recognized and children are not given days off for them? From the outside looking in, Christian's who say things like this always seem to not look beyond themselves. I'm not sure why my children, being raised in a atheist home, would not attend school on a Friday or a Monday because the Christian faith has a holy day on Sunday.

I went to school in NY & NJ and now live in GA with one school age child. We don't get religious holidays off, as a general rule. Christmas has been bundled into winter vacation, Easter sometimes aligns with spring vacation, and we don't have the major Jewish holidays off. To accommodate, students and staff can take an excused day for religious reasons, and the schools have made most of the major religious holidays homework free nights.

It would be the same as us not having a holiday we are used to off. And who whines about having a day off. I don't care if I get the day off because it is national tree hugging day, I'll take the day off.

My point being that it shouldn't be shocking that a religious holiday isn't recognized everywhere. And who was whining? I certainly don't mind a day off or my kids having them off. That was clearly not the point of my post. I also don't believe for a moment that if we made a Muslim holy day a mandatory day off from school that people in the US wouldn't lose their damn minds. (Not sure about Australia).
